Tomlinson seems like he may be an unlikely choice as well. The last Comeback Player of the Year who wasn't returning from serious injury was Jon Kitna in 2003, and that was kind of a gift for the Bengals' 6 game turnaround. I'm not sure LT improves enough on 900 total yards and 12 TDs to win it, but it's certainly possible with everyone viewing him as washed up.
You're right, he didn't have a serious injury, just minor ones. Still, he was benched for half the season. Should have made a note of that. Again, he was also the full time starter the following year and made the Pro Bowl and was responsible in part for a massive turnaround in Miami.
