I haven't started a thread or even commented on one in this forum in a while. But now that the roster is set, and the season is about to kick off, I'm looking at the roster, the preseason games and thinking, if this team goes 9-7 this year and flames out in the playoffs (assuming we get in with that record) Where was it obvious that we had problems. The most obvious issue at this point looks like the LG position in pass coverage. That could cause us a few broken ribbed QB's if it doesn't improve soon. We all see where the defense looks like they are ready to pick up where they left off last year. Even if they don't finish at the top, they should still be one of the 5 best. For me, and this goes back to last season, I just don't feel the love for Mark Sanchez. I was surprised with the price for the pick, and markedly surprised that he didn't do anything during the playoffs to cost us those games. Looking at him during preseason, I don't see much to tell me that he is going to be in the pro bowl at the end of the year. Of course he doesn't have to be that good for us to win the SB, this year, but at least that would ensure that his play was stellar. So, In my opinion, as much as I like him, (who doesn't especially since getting the behind the scenes on Hard Knocks) I see Mark Sanchez as the weakest link on this years team.
Brian Schottenheimer. He's survived to this point because Rex Ryan saved his career. Some consider him a HC candidate, many here wanted him gone a long time ago. He gets too cute with his playcalling that result in a lot of very frustrating drives. The offense in general underachieves under Schotty as opposed to the defense overachieving for Rex from a talent perspective.
Still don't get this. We have all gotten a pretty good look at what Rex is really like at this point but people still insist he has kept this worthless OC around. If Schotty didn't know what he was doing Rex would have gotten rid of him already.
Weakness - LG. Whoever plays that position is gonna struggle in pass protection. Wild card - Sanchez. Are we gonna get 2009 games 1-3/playoff Sanchez or....other.
Before I say Sanchez is the weak link, I want the op to answer this: (Yeah I know you qualified it) How many Sophomore QB's have ever made the Pro-Bowl? All-Pro? (A better gauge) What do Jets fans expect of Sanchez? I think, he isn't going to be very good this year and in the scheme of things, taking into account the development process of QB's, that is perfectly normal. What are realistic expectations? The weakest individual link is Slauson, until proved otherwise. imo
Schotty knows what he's doing. He's not an awful coordinator or anything like that. I'm just pointing out that the offense has always underachieved under him. The results never feel equivalent to the talent. He's got too much of his father in him. Marty took the Chargers to 14-2 and got fired, and was unable to catch on with another team. Some people just can't get over the hurdle, no matter how good they may be.
let's see how everything does with a year of continuity. He has had issues at QB since he got here. whether it be Pennington, Favre, or Sanchez he has always had some unusual issues to deal with. Last year he was handcuffed by Sanchez' rookie mistakes, some of which he may have helped cause. This year has been set up for him and the offense to succeed.
Dont try to win games? As in dont lose us games. He throws a lot of INT's when we could just punt the ball and put our number 1 defense on the field.
There's truth to that. The offense should be significantly better this year than it was last year... however the premise of this thread is "what if it doesn't get better? what if the Jets suddenly suck? whose fault?" I'd put my bet on Schotty.
Most of them hit it already. LG, DE and play calling.. One thing that bothers me about Schotty is that he always keeps patterns outside the hash marks, which is the hardest place to get the ball.. That or the infamous 5 yard curl route. Why cant they use the middle of the field more? Quick slants? Drag routes? Crossing routes? Posts? We didn't see it last year until the playoffs. Is it just a coincidence that Sanchez was playing his best ball during that time? I question his play calling and over-thinking in certain situations..
Slauson is terrible, and you are correct about the second year QB not being lights out, but that's why I qualified it. Just saying that had his preseason play gotten the team in the endzone a few times, with Pennington like precision ( hail to the remaining Penny fans), I would like our chances a lot better.
I still laugh at what people expected from a rookie with limited experience in the NCAA. I wasn't surprised at Sanchez last year. 20 INTs is all people see when 12 of them came in 3 games. He had a decent rookie season. If he goes 3k yards, and 1:1 ratio - no one should complain. If they do, they don't know the game of football. Unless Playoff Sanchez stays for good, which is what we all dream of, that's the kind of season he'll have. His 3rd season should be one where he truly limits his mistakes and starts making more plays. He has that capability. I always thought he is going to be the next Phil Simms. 2 SBs, very talented, but not enough to be a HOFer. That's fine with me. He'll never pass for 4000+ and 30TDs - that's not Rex's style.
