this is a high reward low risk move, Gilbert has a ton of talent, lets see if the staff can bring that out in the practice squad cause lord knows next year we're going to need DL depth.
Clearly. They obviously just didn't understand the player they were drafting and aren't in the business of developing their own guys with patience. He's a 3-4 end, again. This is going to work out well, I think.
here is our offensive line Brick Slauson Mangold Moore Woody Backups Turner Ducasse Hunter Brown assuming we are only keeping 8 offensive lineman and Brown was brought in to replace somebody that nots a starter, who would you guess is gone? Its safe to assume if he was good enough to start, he wouldnt have been cut by minnesota. again assuming we keep 8, and brown will be one of them you have to choose who to say goodbye to between Turner Ducasse Hunter Ducasse is a 2nd round pick he isn't going anywhere, he is part of the OL of the future. So you are left between turner and hunter. Turner is our best backup OL imo and specializes on the interior. Hunter specializes on the exterior, but so does brown. Added bonus, brown also has the ability to play inside. Thats my rationale as to why hunter would be cut to allow brown a full time roster spot, assuming of course, Brown is as good a blocker as hunter
With all the information coming out about how the staff in chicago handled Gilbert, I am shocked nobody picked him up after he got cut. That said I'm glad he came to NY so Ryan could turn him into a stud for us. Rex is the shit no doubt. He makes normal guys like us want to run through a wall, just listening to clips from an edited TV show, I can't even begin to believe what type of motivator he is like in person. Mick, you are definately right though about working for minimum wage to follow Rex and the guys around behind the scenes. Must be one of the best jobs on the planet.
The problem here is with that final assumption. There's absolutely no rational reason to make it. We've actually seen Wayne Hunter play NFL football. We know, for a fact, that he's moderately talented. We know, for a fact, that he's an effective blocking tight end. The guy played sixteen games for us last year, and played well within his role. If I'm wrong, and Brown does make it onto the 53 man roster, it sure as shit won't be Wayne Hunter who gets the boot. It'll be Jeff Cumberland or Brian Jackson or somebody else. Brown was brought in to be an upgrade over Dan Gay, and he is, by default. Good bye Gay. Maybe Brown develops into a serviceable back-up. Maybe Brown develops into a starting tackle. Maybe Brown is a future hall of famer. But right now, he's practice squad material.
Agreed. That would be an interesting look. Even more interesting of course would have been the meeting down in Florida with Revis, but I highly doubt will get that as Tanny/Woody stated they didn't expect to get anything to happen until 2 hours before it was announced when they made that breakthrough.
normally the jets keep 8 OL not 9. Also Turner's main job was to be the "third te" as a blocker, well we are also keeping 4 tes, 2 of which are clearly better served as playing like an extra tackle rather than a pass catching. So it's not inconceivable for those two to take Turners role...
Actually, Hunter's main job was to be a back-up tackle. He just happened to be a better short-yardage blocking tight end than anyone we had on the roster last year. We're not going to cut a cheap young veteran who's played effectively for us for a prospect that's been disregarded by three separate franchises with less talented offensive line corps than ours.
keep in mind, im not advocating it as a good plan. My point is that if the Jets are going to roll with 8 OL, which they have done for several years in a row, and they plan to keep brown, one of Hunter/Turner will be cut. And in my opinion, the weaker of those two is Hunter.
No, that's wrong, too. Just give it a day before you start cutting essential pieces of our roster, guys.
I was actually shocked to see...they basically make the same amount of money. However, cutting Hunter saves you more cap money, but Hartsock doesn't have any extra value. Hartsock is the most expendable player on the roster.
I'm sure there must be some but can anybody name the last person that came off somebody's practice squad and make a major impact in the NFL?
well thats not really true. Hartsock is our designated blocking te. I believe he also plays some ST, particularly in our FG unit. Mulligan is the guy with the least value, the blocking TE role is filled by Hartsock, and he has stone hands. But he has value to westy as a ST guy. oddly enough, the two guys likely to be inactive in all 16 games (as of right now) are Ducasse and Mcknight. they aren't expendable, but they are the most useless guys we have right now. When they develop things will be different, but for now my guess is they are both inactive every game barring injury
Mulligan is far cheaper than Hartsock. Hartsocks role can be filled by a combination of snaps between Hunter and Mulligan. Ducasse and McNot are recent draftees and aren't expendable at all.
Are you kidding me? Hartsock is the best blocking tight end on the roster and it's not even close. Jeff Cumberland and Danny Woodhead are the most expendable players on the roster.
Hartsock is the most expendable player on the roster. That's ridiculous. Ben Hartsock started seven games for us last season. He is the best blocking tight end on a ground and pound team. He's essential. Mulligan is a special teams player. He might evolve into something more, but as Coach Westhoff said, "he's no Gonzalez, but that's OK." You might as well say "Purdum is a cheaper player than Hartsock, so Hartsock is expendable."
Again with the blocking TE stuff. I do not disagree...all I am saying is it's easier to split his snaps between two other players. But a guy whose blocking is served just as well by using a third tackle and has limited hands and an over the minimum salary and plays almost strictly at the point of attack is pretty much a luxury. 4th and 1 on the one, it's Wayne Hunter or Robert Turner lining up, not Hartsock. And that one surprise TD catch a year he brings to the table, does not offset the fact that between Mulligan and Hunter, you can replace everything he adds to the roster.
