Two things about it were troubling for me. First, the swinging gate at guard that will either get Mark Sanchez killed or seriously gun shy sitting in the pocket; and second, how openly they talk about our second and third teams sucking ass.

ETA: Also, the more I see of Tannenbaum, the less impressed I am.

    Loved the episode, though.

I'm surprised at so much of this sentiment. He seems like he's pretty honest with the guys, has to do what he has to do, and keeps a sense of humor about himself. He's also brought in a lot of good players over his tenure.

I'm trying to put my finger on it. Not sure why exactly. He just strikes me as a cementhead, playing with a large dollars.

Probably a decent guy to go boozing with, though.

Not sure why you think that. Tanny and Rex were talking, and even Rex admitted that depth will suffer, he said something like "We have great ones, and that's what you want." He understands that keeping the core starters means less depth.

Slauson has not been a "swinging gate" at LG. He blew ONE block, and it's overblown because the defender went after Sanchez low. If people expect Slauson to be some freakin Berlin wall in pass protction, you will be disappointed. He is in FACT better at pass protect than Faneca was already, and he'll get better. Just watch Faneca in the preseason games for AZ. Now THAT is the football definition of turnstile. They have him in a rotation now, he's out on 3rd and longs.

ALL based on ONE play. Why? Because the guy went after Sanchez's knees. Brick got beat worse than that in the same game on the inside. No one says shit about that.

Our pass blocking was fine, we had a rookie QB who wasn't as quick getting rid of the ball as a vet would be.

I hope you are right, I want Slauson to do great and I know we have guys capable of leading on this offense but the coaching staff seems to be concerned about it.

I can't believe people are really defending Faneca's pass blocking. Say whatever you want about him as a run-blocker, but as a pass blocker he was the worst in football last year. You literally cannot do worse with anyone. I don't care what kind of leadership skills a guy has, if he sits down on the turf on pass plays your QB is going to get brutalized.

We have cheerleaders. We don't ask them to block for Sanchez.

It was the Jets who highlighted their issues at guard. Not me. It was the Jets who talked about their depth concerns. Not me.

I'm telling you what concerned me watching this episode. But I've checked my drawers - no urine stains. No fresh ones, at least.

I got that. I'm saying that Rex and Schotty over reacted to that ONE play because the guy that beat Slauson went after Sanchez low, and it scared the crap out of them. They know we don't have a solid backup QB. Like I said, in that same game Brick got beaten worse than that.

Maybe they had something to say about Brick getting beat, but was edited out? Or when Woody got beat?

I don't buy into the opinion some folks that say you can't read anything into what happens on Hard Knocks, but it has to be understood, it isn't a documentary either. It sure isn't "fair and balanced". But you can get some impressions, but all have to be taken with a grain of salt. I think they went after Slauson in the editing room. I doubt Callahan had nothing to say about the performance of Brick and Woody in that game. They just didn't film it or it ended up on the film room floor. Not a good enough story.

Other than that ONE play... did Slauson get ripped on his overall performance? If he did, I missed it.

I wouldn't even say they overreacted. They were rightfully pissed about that play. I'm sure if we sat and watched hours of them watching game film, we'd be able to edit together a video that shows our whole team sucks.

If Faneca were still here with Hard Knocks, we'd be crying doom over him too.

Yeah, come on guys. It was ONE play. Even D'Brick gets beat once in a while.

That is overblown, he was never a great pass blocker but he was serviceable as a pass blocker the last couple of years for us. You guys act like he was Everett McIver against Bruce Smith.

It was one play that could have seriously gotten our QB hurt.

Then why didn't we see them ripping Brick who got beat once in that game worse than Slauson? Or Woody who got beat THREE freakin times? Either they got critisized and it wasn't on Hard Knocks, or the CS over reacted because the guy that beat Slauson went after Sanchez's knees while he was throwing.

What did they say? "That's just what happened to Brady..." It was the hit that freaked them out. Because it was Slauson's guy, he got the brunt of it. I think they over reacted. I'm glad Callahan is there. He is the voice of reason on the O line. He is the guy that knows far more about the O line than Rex or Schotty. Rex has admitted as much. Now, if Callahan was ripping Slauson a new arse hole... different story.

I can't decide if we're dancing around the same point or not, so I'll end my thought with this - think of the content and editing. They start with a clip of Slauson looking god awful; they then break into clips of Vlad looking awful AND stupid. I'm sure there are hundreds of minutes of clips that HBO shot, and dozens of other story lines. They chose this one. I'm guessing in all that footage we never see there is a discussion or two about team concerns. I'm guessing HBO picked one that seemed to come through clearest on film.

Is it fair for me to say I'm concerned about that position after watching that Hard Knocks episode? Of course it is. But here's the real kicker - even if they didn't show a single Slauson play on HBO I'd still be concerned. He's still young and inexperienced.

Faneca was servicable in pass blocking? You keep missing this point.

Faneca got the lowest pass blocking rating amoung ALL starting guards in the NFL last year.

That's 64 starting guards. Faneca graded out at #64.

That is WHY he got dumped, with the Jets on the hook for $5 million of his salary this year.

How do you know that Callahan was in favor of it? It had to do w/ money, I'm sure Callahan was pissed about it.

The thing that bothers me is that they can fleece the fans w/ PSLs but in an uncapped year where they could have kept a few of thesew guys they decided to get cheap. I HOPE it doesn't come back to bite us, I think getting rid of Faneca was a good move for the long term but when you are built to win right now it's a bad move for this year.
