Source: Both Sides Believe a Deal is within Re Anyone see this on theJetsBlog? http://www.thejetsblog.com/2010/08/31/source-jets-revis-continue-talks-both-sides-believe-a-deal-is-within-reach/
The original article from fanhouse has been posted a couple times...it's from Graziano the only guy who still claims sources are telling him that the sides are close
The only thing I've learned about the Darrelle Revis situation in the last week is that Dan Graziano knows less than I do.
My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Revis pass out at 31 Flavors last night. Not good.
The problem with Graziano's story, and his source, is that saying that negotiations are complicated but likely to get resolved makes absolutely no sense at all. If things are complicated then the odds are it's not going to get resolved any time soon, as that would require somebody to move off of their position to simplify things. If somebody was willing to move off of their position to get the deal done then things wouldn't be complicated. It's a Catch-22, and what that likely means is that Graziano's info and source are unreliable indicators of when a deal might get done. Cowlishaw was similarly caught in a logical pretzel when he said a deal was probably getting done by Wednesday, or if not then by Saturday. If the deal was probably getting done then having two different dates that it might get done by made no sense at all. You can't have a probable deal by Wednesday that might then probably get done by Saturday, because if it failed to get done by Wednesday that opened up the very real possibility that it also wouldn't get done by Saturday. Saying that it was probably getting done on one of the two dates was a dead giveaway that there was nothing probable about the deal at all. Which of course is what we discovered when Saturday came and went with no deal.
I think his source is BS. He doesn't tell us anything other than "both sides are talking and it's complicated." Really? No shit Also, the only quote from the "source" is "There are a lot of different possibilities still in play," That's some great insider info right there.
I think what Mehta means is that when Revis finally signs both sides will want to put this whole thing behind them and move forward and the easiest way to do that is for the fine to be dropped. There's no point for the Jets to reach an agreement with Revis and simultaneously try to collect the fine, since that would defeat the purpose of ending the standoff amicably which is what everybody will want. If Revis just walks in for whatever reason the Jets will likely also drop the fine because again they won't want to cause more problems that already exist at that point. Fining people for holding out just makes no sense given that when the person finally reports you don't want them pissed off at you. If Revis misses actual games then he's going to wind up with a defacto fine in terms of game checks missed. Even then the Jets may well decide to just pay him to keep him from being unduly upset in the locker room.
This makes sense. Either that or regardless of which deal he gets(when/if) he'll still be making enough money to cut a check to cover two or three rounds of these fines without bating an eye lash.
The fines dont really matter b/c once they get a deal all the fines go bye-bye anyway. The only way the fines would ever matter would be if Revis never plays for the Jets again, which is slim.
Exactly. If there are a lot of different possibilities still in play then the odds are that one or both of the sides, probably the Revis side, still haven't decided what they want to do at this point. That makes predicting an outcome by a given date basically impossible. This assuming that Revis hasn't already told the Jets he's coming in at a specific date but still hasn't decided on what terms. If Revis has done that then you'll see the Jets practicing Wilson at the nickel and not picking up another corner sometime in the next week as cuts continue to happen around the league. That should be a good indicator of how likely a deal is to happen before Sept 13.
