Ventras reported the fourth tight end is Cumberland, didn't see that posted. I could see the Jets develop Cumberland into a "true" back-up for Dustin Keller. Think about it: if Keller goes down, you can't just thrust Hartsock or Mulligan into his role; they're a different species of tight end. You'd have to throw out a good chunk of the playbook, and I have a feeling a lot of the playbook features Dustin Keller this year. Cumberland makes the roster as a very, very poor man's Dustin Keller.
This forum is so fucking sarcastic............... We have had a wealth of talent at FB this year, and letting Jason Davis go is a shame. Next season Richardson may be gone and we'll be in the hunt for another FB. I agree, Jeff 'sausage' Cumberland makes the team, maybe only on the Practice squad, but long term, I think they see him as a viable option to Keller, should he get an injury. Although Hartsock is no Keller, he can still catch. Now we have LT as an option, Cotch in the slot and Keller, TE for us looks like a very dangerous weapon. In another thread I said that I think Keller is going to be Sanchez's go to guy this year and after watching pre-season so far, think that this is going to be the case.
I really don't think that's true. Richardson was the only FB on the roster last year and the only reason that we're keeping 2 this season is because Richardson will be 39 by the end of the season and Westhoff could use some more help on ST.
Dude, usually one FB is kept. The Jets have T-Rich and The Terminator. When T-Rich is gone, it'll only be John Conner. And we all have to honest about Cumberland. He's the 4th TE for a reason. He's not a viable backup for Keller because he can't run routes like Keller and is a total project. He's 2 years away from really being able to play in this league IF he gets to that point. I know we love the underdog on this team, but most of them are that way for a reason. They just aren't stars or even JAGs. They are below average players.
I asked Mehta and Vrentas last night about whether TE4 was Cumberland or Purdum. Vrentas basically told me not to be so silly, but Mehta said 'good point, you could be right'. So nobody knows, IMO. And Rex/Mike could still change their minds anyway.
Tom Cruise just announced that he will be a Jets' fan this season, since we have the most tight ends in the NFL.
its rare. Very rare. But when one is ancient and the other is helpful on special teams and will be a loved monster the way Mack Strong was in Seattle, you keep two.
