Vernon played in place of Calvin Pace for the first 4 games of the season. The Jets went 3-1 and the defense was outstanding. Vernon made no major mistakes during those games and he was a contributor to the team's success. He was SERVICEABLE.
No, he was a body taking up space, doing nothing to contribute. Again, you fail to see the difference. Lowery- serviceable. Gholaston- not.
you have a better shot at discovering the identity of Art Flato....than convincing AbdulSalam about Gholston's shoddy play thus far.
I would not say serviceable in the first 4 games. the best you can say is he did not cost us any games. Serviceable would be posting the numbers against the Panthers as an average for the first 4 games. we are talking a total of 14 to 16 tackles ect... that would be serviceable. His performance would be classified as forgettable. I am not down playing he is actually showing improvement this summer but lets not put the cart before the horse
Okay. if your definition of "serviceable" is leading the defense statistically, then that is your opinion. Its not my definition however. To me Serviceable means taking up blocks, freeing other guys to make the tackles, not committing costly penalties and not making stupid mistakes that cost your team points or the game. I'm well aware that Vernon Gholston is not Deacon Jones or Shawn Merriman. Nor did I ever state that I was ecstatic with him or that I thought he was even a good player thus far. He hasn't been a good player thus far in his pro career. I think he is improving and I am cautiously optimistic that he'll continue to improve as he gets more NFL experience at DE. I would love to see the guy have a great season and prove his detractors and the haters wrong. I'm rooting for him and I'm hoping for steady and continued improvement.
... gholston was a very pleasant surprise in watching this game ... ... let's hope his play continues this upward trajectory ... l_j_r
14 tackles in 4 games would not be leading this defense out of curiosity how many tackles did the other linebackers get in that span? If your definition of serviceable is 12 total tackles for the year plus another 5 assists fine then he is serviceable. I would still define last year for him as forgettable which in this case is not horrible. He did nothing to cost us games but really he did nothing to help win any either. Here is a good way to measure this if you watched every game last year (I did) would you forget he even played in a game the entire year. I think I can say yes. But so far this summer he has been a much improved player you watched the panthers game and if he played 4 games like that year you would say yes he was a serviceable player. In this case I do not see it. I did some searching 6 tackles for the month of September. 3 games he averaged 2 tackles per game in the same split Harris 21 and Scott 17 Thomas 9 tackles. By year long stats he outperformed Westerman who had 10 tackles all year but had more playing time. I think that is part that ticks the haters off. A free agent is out performing him. But again this is not solely on him blame the front office and Mangina for taking him where they did and then playing him out of position. At least Rex recognized the mistake and is putting him into a position to succeed and thus far this training camp he has shown improvident, gotta wonder what he may have been if they would have let him play de from the begining
VG reminds me of this guy (hurry only 1 left!): http://www.amazon.com/Anthony-Upper...e=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1282623391&sr=1-1
I understand the balance between bashing our players and looking for the good in them, but as longtime football fans we have a sense of what we see on the field and the truth is Vernon sucks, why can't we admit it? There are many players who played college football that have similar physical attributes as him who left college and have gone on with their lives, the Jets are trying to justify the inevitable, he is a bust and will make the list of the worst top picks all time. There is nothing wrong with that it happens, some high picks pan out others don't. Oh by the way, Mark Sanchez is still not ready to carry this team.
I love how you just take to personal attacks when backed in a corner. I asked you before to defend you position as to exactly how Gholston was "serviceable" in the 4 games where he started, and you failed to do so. Provide specific examples. Com-Pren-Day?
Actually Mrs. Gholston, I did watch the game. And like I said before, making 4 tackles against a bunch of guys that aren't going to even make the Panthers' roster is NOT A GOOD GAME. UPDATE!!! Gholston just had breakfast and wiped his own ass, go make another thread about how great he is.
