I agree with this as well. I was just as shocked to see him all over the field on Sat. He had a good game. I would just like to see him do it more consistently. I hope he really has turned a corner.
I don't remember Gholston ever having a complete game like Saturday in any preseason game in previous years. Also, I never read or heard about him voluntarily taking a pay cut until last week when Rex mentioned it. You never have anough pass rushers, if he can contribute this year that's great, there's nothing we can do now about where he was drafted.
Don't ever remember him having a great camp. This is the first year that we've actually seen any kind of progress.
Agreed. He's had 'plays' here and there, but he really played a complete game on Saturday. That one is new.
I doubt he'll be an elite player, but I still believe he can tap out as a very quality DE in the 3-4 system.
I share the view that he has not been good. His first season he was out of position and played poorly. His seond season he was mainly out of position and he was serviceable but inconsistent. Now he is in his second season w/Rex as his HC and He is finally in the right position. He has been working hard and is showing progress to the point where if you are going to be fair minded you have to recognize that the guy is taking steps forward. As a Jets fan you should be excited that this player is developing in yr 3 and that if he keeps working hard he may blossom into a very solid member of a top ranked D. Trashing him because he got drafted too high is a lame attack since the Jets FO decided to draft him at 6. I've never gotten the haters' incessant attacks on this guy. Yes he's had some bad games, but he has also played pretty well at times too. Its not like Vernon Gholston has cost the Jets wins. Its not as if he blew a playoff game etc. He just hasn't lived up to his high draft selection, but its not because he showed a lack of effort or because he was a prima donna. The guy agreed to restructure his deal in order to help out the team. Also many guys take time to develop in the NFL, especially when they are asked to play out of position as rookies. Its always seemed to me that some fans were way to harsh on this guy. Hopefully he continues to develop and becomes a very good player at DE.
Last season when he was playing in place of Calvin I thought he was pretty good at times and was a serviceable backup. He had improved over where he was as a rookie.
the only impact play I've ever seen Gholston make in a Green/white uniform....was when he had a clear shot at D.Carr...and plastered him all over the turf......then reality kicked in and it was negated by a flag. Other than that....he's done fuck all for this team up until this point. Has he turned the corner? I guess we'll see in a few weeks.....but i'm not going to hold my breath over it.
I'm not going to start boning the donut over some plays made in a preseason game against a total shit offense like they had in the second half, but I liked what I saw from Gholston on a number of things, including finishing those plays like Rex was saying to him. Gholston, probably for the first time since he was drafted, looked like a football player. He wasn't as stiff as he had been the first 2 seasons and he is becoming pretty good at evading and disengaging from blocks when he needs to, and against the guards he seemed to be able to drive some blocks backward to disrupt the pocket. That was progress, I don't care if it was against their 2's. But the I-Told-You-So's crowing about 4 tackles against the fucking Carolina Panthers in the second preseason game need a reality check. Paging AbdulSpellcheck.
Thats cool. Im not suggesting that you should hold your breath or that Gholston made some tremendous impact play last season. I stated that he was better last season than he was as a Rookie and that he was servicable in replacing Pace during Calvin's BS pot suspension. To me that was definately an improvement over a poor rookie season and if anything it showed that improved coaching and hard work showed some progress. Now if Vern can continue to make progress and now that he is in his correct position - hopefully he continues to develop and improve. I'm an optimist and I think Vern has gotten a bit of an undeserved bad rap. I understand that he is not LC Greenwood or Jack Youngblood. But I am optimistic that with good coaching and hard work Vern can be a serviceable contributor to this D and maybe more as his confidence and experience grows.
There were reports last year that he had several rushes on the QB's and would've recorded multiple sacks in practice and it didn't just come from Rex either. But everyone else is pretty much correct when they say that Gholston played a complete game this past Sat. I'm glad he did, but like I said, I need to see it on a consistent basis to believe he's heading in the right direction. Remember, his biggest knock in college wasn't his strength and ability to get to the QB, it was the fact that he would take off plays and even games at a time. That's why I'm more worried about his consistency, especially now that he's playing a more natural position that fits him. Let's hope he can keep it up.
Undeserved rap? The guy has 1 complete game and 2 average to decent games (ALL in Pre-season) out of a total of 39 games either as a started or as a backup and you think all the shit he's gotten is undeserved? U can't possibly be serious.
Of course I'm serious. We took a guy that we knew was raw and drafted him too high and then expected him to immediately be able to play a position in the NFL that he wasn't going to be able to play. Unsurprisingly, he had a miserable rookie season. last year he was serviceable and hopefully this year he will continue to improve now that he has had some consistent coaching and now that he is playing in his correct position. He works hard and is by all accounts an excellent team player. I don't think he deserves to be hated by fans of his own team. I think the haters are full of shit and that they are lousy fans for trashing a young player who was drafted too high and then mismanaged as a rookie. Thats my opinion and thats why I think much of this is an undeserved rap. Some players take longer to develop in the NFL especially when they are asked to play the wrong position. He played a good game on Saturday and the reaction from the haters is to trash the guy. He is one of our own guys, he played a good game, he works hard, he is improving. Cut him some fucking slack for crying out loud and try being supportive and positive instead of finding reasons to take a dump on the guy despite his improvement.
I did a fantasy draft in Madden and through 5 weeks Gholston is the league leader in sacks with 7. i lol'd
Dude, VG is as green as the jersey he wears... The Gholston story.. Sophomore in HS, YR1. Offensive Line. Junior in HS YR2. Offensive Line. Senior in HS YR3. OL/LB Ohio St YR4. LB six games Ohio St. YR5. Injured. Ohio St. YR6. LB/DE Ohio St. YR7 LB/DE 7 years, the first two at OL, a year in College injured. Is it a shock that moving to NFL OLB was a little beyond him? We talk about Ducasse as Green and Project, when he's played exactly the same amount of time as Gholston, and has the added benefit of playing one position...
I'm not hating on Gholston. I am acknowledging that he had a good game on Sat., but it just seems that the talk about Gholston turning the corner or showing signs of life comes only then. In Pre-Season. I want see him do the exact same things in Sept. thru Jan when it matters most. On another note, let's not talk as if Gholston was taken from DE to OLB exclusively. There were several times on 3rd and long during the Mangini era as well as the Rex Ryan era, where Gholston had his hand on the ground (you know...his natural position) and he still showed that he didn't get it. His one and only move, the bull-rush, wasn't cutting it. It's the reason why he didn't dress during games, because coaches felt they had more production from an undrafted player than they could get from him in a game. Now, it seems like he's able to disengage blocks and take up several blockers, and that's awesome. I just want to see it done consistently. Is consistency too much to ask from a 3rd year player with all the potential in the world? I don't think so. Gholston had a good game on Saturday. Awesome. I hope he keeps it up. If he wants to change the perception of how the majority of fans feel about him, he needs to go out there and prove it week in and week out. Enough with the pre-season bullshit. He needs to get it done on Sundays.
