At this point, Clemens looks like a better option should Sanchez go down. Brunell hasn't been with the team very long so that may be part of it. I think it would be a big mistake to cut or trade Clemens at this time. If Brunell doesn't pick things up soon, I would rather see Clemens in the game should Sanchez get hurt.
Brunell is number two in name only. He's there to teach Sanchez, not to play. If Sanchez get's hurt, Brunell gets maybe the rest of that game. Clemens is the backup, make no mistake about it. (Brunell is probably there so Mevi$ agents don't get in Clemens ear to tell him... you're the only one that knows the playbook hold out for 16 mil)
Clemens has to make the team by showing hes better than both Brunell and KO'C. He's done a damn good job of that so far from what I've seen, though a lot of that has to do with the ineptitude of Brunell. I have no problem with the Brunell move. Ainge has a drug problem, O'Connell is showing why he was released a year after being a 3rd round pick, and Clemens hasn't been that successful. But I hope Ryan is flexible when it comes to who is the actual #2 quarterback. That's fine if he's saying Brunell is the 2 to make it obvious he's on the team, but if Sanchez goes down, I want Clemens out there. Brunell is DONE.
I don't think you have to worry about that. It's not like Brunell is going to negate the 3rd QB rule with his superior holding skills. If Sanchez goes down and clearly won't be able to return in a game, I don't think there will be any hesitation on using Clemens and relegating Brunell to the bench for the rest of the game.
You do realize Cavanaugh had 5,000 total yards in a 13 or 14 year career right? And that he was a back up QB when he got those 2 rings? How do you see him having first hand knowledge of playing championship caliber QB? Brunell has been selected to the Pro Bowl 3 times and also has a ring as a back up not that it really matters.
I think the advantage MB has over Cavanaugh in terms of coaching Sanchez is that MB is suited up and Cavanaugh isn't. In this way, Burnell is a team-mate and has the ability to communicate with Sanchez on a different level. I really think KC is our effective #2. Ainge and O'Connell don't deserve to ever see the field. I think they keep MB and KC as the backups.
