This deserves its own thread  Good TC, good against the Giants, another good game against the Panthers.... Heres something you don't see every day.....
Yes Gholston tackled the 2nd 3rd strings, and undrafted free agents of the Carolina panthers. And likewise against the giants. Yet he still hasnt gotten a sack this preseason. Until he A- gets a sack and B- repeats it in the regular season im not getting excited about him. No reason to get giddy about a top draft pick that still has 0 sacks in his 3rd nfl season, especially when all hes done is tackle backups
Shockingly, there were a number of plays that he was in perfect position for but pulled up. One screen play in the second quarter was read perfectly by him...and he made the adjustment and would have been an easy tackle for a loss..but the back dropped the ball. There were a few other plays like that. Incredibly, his stats do not give him enough credit for the game he actually had. Pinch me. Now many will right it off as second unit nonsense...which is true..but hey...that was a hell of a leap for him. Something positive is happening. Is this the peak? Or the beginning...stay tuned.
Haha. I said in a game thread that you'd deserve props after the game. The fish and chips were right. Oh, and to ciz, he actually did play well against the starters early on, tying up multiple blockers just like a 3-4 DE should.
The Panthers left their starters in for the entire first half. We saw the 'flashy' plays in the second half, but Gholston was actually solid if you were watching him in the first. I was happy to see progress even before the backups came in. He looked good all game.
Oh I know the starters were in the first half, but I think 3.5 of Gholstons 4.5 tackles were in the 2nd half no ? And it was hard to tell how much of an impact he had since our whole defense seemed incredibly effective in the first half. The Panthers offense went nowhere when they actually got the ball which didnt seem very often till later on
He certainly did IR. And yes, a some of it was against their 1st stringers. He was the most active defensive player for most of the game.
Quite possible. The stuff I was commenting on and impressed with in the first half had to do with him taking on his assignments to free up other people to make plays. Just because he doesn't get a tackle doesn't mean he's not aiding the play or doing exactly what he's supposed to.
It is even more important that he becomes a decent player in the rotation because of Pitoitua's injury.
Also his immediate stats aren't important if Gholston performs at the level he is supposed to. Disrupting and taking on blockers never shows up in the stats.
Couldn't watch the game at all tonight live, got back home and was able to watch from midway through the 3rd quarter till the end of the game on the SNY replay. Tried focusing on how Gholston was doing on the D. I must admit, I felt he looked very explosive coming off the snap. He looked a lot faster and looked a much more determined player than he has over the past 2 years. I also saw him run a guy down from behind for the tackle and at first thought it COULDN'T have been Gholston, but it was him. Odd not seeing him around the pile with his hands around his hips. It looked like he was actually out there trying, and playing with some fire. In terms of his rush repertoire, he still relies way too heavily on bull rushing and still doesn't use his hands effectively in any swats/swim/rush moves. However there was one play where he was able to shed his block nicely and he was able to pressure Claussen into throwing it out, again, running 100% showing good hustle and taking a smart angle to Jimmy C on the way. It was nice to see Gholston not half-assedly running at a QB from behind aimlessly as he did against Cutler and the Broncos 2 years ago (I know you guys remember that horrible fail of a QB hurry by Gholston). I'll admit I was very impressed with the little I did get to see of him, even though I couldn't watch the game in its entirety. He looks like he's made a bunch of improvement. It was all against the 2's and the 3's of the Panthers though, so take it for what it's worth, but from what I saw he played well. EDIT: reading some of the comments above, apparently he played a very nice 1st half against the Panthers 1st unit too. I really gotta DL and watch the whole game now.
True, but the point is that this time last year, he would have had zero tackles against pop-warner. The steps that hes taken are huge. I'll be so stoked if this guy starts to live up to his potential.
Yeah Gholston looked pretty good during the entire game. Sure he missed some tackles and fell down once or twice, but it looks like the game is starting to slow down for him, which is what he really needs. One thing about Gholston though is that if/when he REALLY gets it 100%, he's going to be a fucking scary player. With his freakish strength for his size, he has the potential to be an elite 3-4 DE. Most 3-4 DE's need to be huge to take on multiple OL and that sort of size slows you down, Gholston could be one of the few 3-4 DE's who could be a real pass rusher, sort of like in the 4-3, but still have enough strength to take on multiple blocks when needed. I think Rex Ryan made a great move in switching him to DE and hopefully he'll keep progressing throughout the season. We're really starting to see why he's still around here taking up a roster spot.
I don't get the sacks obsession, particularly in his new position. That's like rating Kyle Wilson a bust because he has no INTs yet. Gholston was doing a lot of things well last night, including against the Carolina 1s as part of our 2s on D, who by the way gave up nothing.
No it's not, Kyle has played two games, not two years. Anyway, Gholston can ONLY pass rush, and we knew that when we drafted him.
