not true, he boomed all 4 kicks, and barely missing one. and he was a pro bowler w/dallas before. but yeah last season he was horrible.
He consistently put every kickoff into the end zone so the leg strength is there. I'm not worried about kicks under 40 yards. He will hit those. It looks like he will have a 50% success ratio from over 40 which I'd like to be at 75 or 80.
Could we see a potential battle of the cut Dallas Cowboy kickers week 1? Cundiff vs Folk. I would rather see Shayne Graham miss a few more field goals against us.
Tim Graham wrote up a quick article with some background on Nick Folk and how the Jets ended up acquiring him. I thought it was an interesting read. He's been pretty good so far from all indications. Cardiac kid: Nick Folk gets pumping again By: Tim Graham http://espn.go.com/blog/afceast/post/_/id/16664/cardiac-kid-nick-folk-gets-pumping-again
Once upon a time, the Giants played the Eagles on a very windy day in the Meadowlands. Parcells put a single back receiver to field the Eagle's punts. As many punters (handling the ball prior to 'kick') were either receivers or quarterbacks at the college level prior to entering the NFL (too many to name), the Eagle's coach Buddy Ryan (with a ferocious wind at their back) inserted QB and former UNLV QB/P Randall Cunningham in to punt (from deep inside Philly territory)... The punt took off in the jet stream....once (was it the gutsy Leon Bright?) let it hit the 'turf' it was all over.....the "turned-over" punt took off downfield and in the matter of ONE STINKING PUNT, it totally changed field position...and the game. Head coaches for the most part didn't know shit (or really gave enough of a shit at that time) about the kicking game--they pretty much read a trade off of punts as a "push" in terms of field position unless an obvious 'wind' factor came into play. Parcells eventually got clued into the field position dynamic particularly with respect to the Meadowland's late-season wind currents and learned to script his kicking/punting game accordingly (read: Sean "living with models" Landetta)....particularly after his "whiff" fiasco vs. the Bears in Chicago during the Bear's '85 SB run. Granted, Landetta's wind-blown whiff aside, no one was beating Ditka/Ryan & Co. that year anyway. Bottom line: Parcells acknowledged later that--on that windy day vs. Buddy's Eagles--he should've put another receiver back to field punts. Point=Ryan.
...then again, this is a thread about Folk and not Weatherford...not sure what my point was on re-reading this *gulp* hmy: carry on
How come everyone of your posts comes across as a really old guy with lots of ear hair, talking about walking to school in the snow, uphill, both ways?
Still not over your Chad Anger Syndrome? Doug Brien sucked. He had two chances to win that game, on the road vs a 15-1 team for a chance to play in the AFC Championship game. Two chances for a professional kicker and he couldn't make one. He sucked. Regardless of the QB or what else happened in that game, we lined up twice for a makeable FG to beat the #1 seed and advance, he couldn't do it. Regarding Folk, I'm hoping for the best but I'd much rather have kept Feeley.
I haven't noticed the difference yet. Jay missed a FG in his first preseason game this year too  I liked that Folk was working with Chris Sailer all offseason. Figured it would correct his mechanics and make him a stellar kicker again. Hopefully that proves true.
I'm not going to worry about the preseason. Feeley made some big kicks while he was here and was very steady most of the time. If Folk can do what Feeley did I'll be happy. Remember, we only got Feeley in a pinch when Nugent got hurt in Week 1 a couple of years ago so you never know.
One thing about Feely that people forget is he was generally poor on kick offs. His KO's were line drives, not deep or both. Sure he can tackle, however if a team depends on its kicker to consistently make tackles there is something fundamentally wrong. No need to go into the game(s) that were lost because of fundamentally bad special teams. Sorry, but Feely was part and parcel to that. The Jets allowed more big runbacks last year then I can remember. I am fairly certain line drive and poor kick offs had a lot to do with it. Sure Feely was a great interview and flew around to make tackles but he wasn't that great a kicker. He wasn't automatic and his kickoffs were generally poor. It's not like the Jets ceremonially kicked Pat Leahy to the curb. They let a kicker go they found on the scrap heap for another scrap heap kicker. I just don't see the need for the drama over Feely.
Yeah, I'm not worried about it either. It was a joke because of all the panic the preseason seems to be inducing around here. I like Folk. I said the other day, I think he'll be fine. I do think Feely was underrated by a lot of people, though.
This is pretty fair. I think Feely was just about as good as it got in the old Meadowlands, but he certainly didn't have the best leg strength on kickoffs. Of course, that was a pretty consistent knock on Folk as well IIRC. I think both kickers are better than their scrap heap status, but both had problems prior to being picked up. Folk had poor mechanics due to a rushed return from injury, Feely had a mouth that got him into trouble in his last, unmentionable, job location. He was certainly better than a lot of people give him credit for, but hardly irreplaceable.
When's the last time we did have anyone good at kicking off? You have to go back to the early days of John Hall and even then they changed the ball or moved it back five yards and he wasn't so good after a while. The league wants kickoff returns rather than touchbacks, I think they have legislated it so there are returns most of the time.
True and just to be clear, I do not know how well Folk is on kickoffs. I am not on/off the Folk bandwagon. The reports I am reading are that his KO's are better than last years. Obviously, when fatigue sets in to the middle/end of the year we will see what Folk is all about. Hopefully he will be fine. I was pointing out that last year wasn't all that great by any stretch. Edit: Yes, Feely loves to beak off in the press. One thing with the Jets current regime, Feely didn't get any demerits for that...........lol
Folk's KOs looked fine to me in the first game, but it was a knock on him in Dallas. Could have been mechanics, though. I don't recall whether the complaints were before or after his injury.
I believe all of his kickoffs reached the endzone in the Giants game, which is a good sign. Rex was also praising his KO ability in a presser last week before the game.
I wonder if Westhoff and Rex know what they are doing? I think they do. I will stick with what they feel regarding players evaluations.
