So your really think that if the Jets had not made the offer Mevi$ would have happily played the season for a million? Come on man, this was coming, offer or no offer from the Jets. They merely acknowledged what everyone knew, that he had way outplayed his contract. They did not say we're going to open the piggy bank and give you everything. If they were going to open negotiations to redo a contract that still had three years on it I think it was not crazy for them to think he might temper his demands a bit. They were wrong in that assumption but I certainly don't think less of them for making it. I think at this point I'd like to see the Jets totally screw Mevi$s and let him rot during what should be his most productive time if he doesn't see the light. Let him sit this year then sit next year during the lockout and see where is is in two years. Trade him then or let him sit another year.
I don't think Revis is that evil, but he is being quite douchey about his contract. The thing is though, holding out and firmly denying all contract offers to date strengthens his position in hope the Jets crack and put more money on the line. Revis probably wants to be on the field and contend for a title this year, although he may just be in it for the paycheck, a la Albert Haynesworth. Hopefully he despises training camp and two-a-days so he holds out 'til that's over and ends up signing before the regular season. My guess is a compromised offer in the 10/130 range with 35 guaranteed.
Any news? no right. Most people predicted this thing to end by Preseason Game 3 which is next friday. So let the countdown begin? I expect on Wednesday that they have reached an agreement. If Thursday comes I will be worried. And if Friday comes then I will probably accept Revis has played his last game as a Jet and NFL possibly.
Looking at all the moves this off-season as a pattern I think it's pretty clear the Jets knew Revis wasn't playing for them in 2010 under the existing contract. Here's how I would lay out everything we know at this point and then move it towards a logical conclusion. Background factors: 1. The Jets knew that Revis was going to have the upperhand on the appearance of his compensation for 2010. Having him play for a million dollars after having the best season a cornerback has had in a decade or more was going to look bad on the face of it. 2. The Jets knew that Revis was likely to hold out because he had held out successfully once before. It was almost a foregone conclusion that they were going to have resistance from him to playing for the million and that the resistance was likely to take the form of a holdout. They knew Sean Gilbert would strongly support a holdout and factored that in. 3. The Jets knew that Revis agents were going to be really hard to deal with. Tannenbaum has locked horns with them before and nobody has come away from the process happy. What the Jets did to try to make things more workable: 1. They approached Revis very quickly after the season to get a feel for what their options were. They didn't get a good sense of where things were headed but at least they knew at that point that things weren't going to go smoothly and they could start to plan ahead. I, BTW, disagree with this step, but thinking about it I understand why they did it - they had to know before free agency and the draft. 2. They began to make moves to lessen the leverage that Revis could exert on them. They traded for Antonio Cromartie, so the #1 corner slot would not be unfilled during the negotiation process. They selected Kyle Wilson late in the first round so that they'd have two guys potentially capable of starting if Revis held out. It was pretty clear that Lowery did not have #2 potential and so they got somebody who did. 3. They didn't allow communications to break down early in the process over Revis unreasonable demands. They kept talking to him so that he'd come into the OTA's and participate, stringing out the separation process until the last possible moment just before camp. That's one of the reasons this is not yet a bitter holdout. The Jets didn't make any moves that they didn't have to, in fact they still haven't done that to this point. They're trying to keep things civil from a procedural point of view, unlike AJ Smith as an example. So now we're at the end stage of what the Jets have been working towards since January. All of the following things are in place: 1. They have enough cornerbacks to put a competent defense on the field, maybe even a very good one. Revis absence has not yet crippled the Jets chances for 2010 because as long as Cromartie and Wilson stay healthy they Jets are probably ok at cornerback. 2. Lines of communication with Revis and his agents are still open. Nothing appears to be getting done at the moment but we're not at a heated confrontation with trade demands and play-or-sit ultimatums being fired back and forth. 3. Everybody but the fans seems to be calm and managing the situation as well as can be expected from their point of view. The press on the Revis situation has not gone particularly negative yet in either direction and there's no overall media storm over it brewing either. If Revis doesn't play game 1 it won't be the huge deal it might have been without a lot of the other factors. I'm cautiously optimistic that the Jets could play this year without Revis and do better than they did last season. I think there's also still a chance that he comes in and the Jets do better than they did last season.
Agreed. The way this has played out connects a lot of the Jets moves this offseason following the AFC Championship loss. Obviously some of the above may be a bit of a stretch or just plain coincidence but when all is said and done, the front office has ultimately tried to minimize the blow and repercussions in losing Revis.
The Darrelle Revis Holdout Thread ($40 million apart) Can someone fill me in on the Revis situation? I thought since he had a contract that he'd be in camp?? I was at the game and didn't see him, much to my chagrin. (sarcasm) for those who can't tell.
I wish I could make this entire post into a sig. Jesus Christ. I try to avoid this thread because of how bat-shit irrational MOST people are in discussing this (let alone ignorant of the law and the fact that, in their everyday lives, they likely breach contracts on a regular basis). This post was brilliant.
Wilson fell to us. He was projected to go higher, and when he fell to 29 there was no way we could have passed him up.
No I think we do know dude...last game in the NFL?? Really? Out of all the ridiculous shit that's in this thread (there's fuckin plenty) that may take the cake
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX!!!!!!!!! live like theirs no 2maro. it cud be u, homies.
while nobody knows for certain, intelligent people can make intelligent predictions based on past scenarios that are comparable -- like every other single holdout in the history of pro-sports. hence why you are clearly having difficulties with such. just fucking stupid.
Don't agree in general but do on some specific points. Sheppard was a fail. They needed Cromartie just to replace him. Cro has only a year left on his contract. Drafting Wilson was not only a move for the future, but was done in case Cro might not be re-signed. Ryan can never have enough DB's especially CB's. Neither of these moves were done because the Jets expected Revis to hold out. They were solid football moves. Ryan knows he needs more talent to face the 4 WR sets Indy puts out there. Look at what happened when Strickland got hurt. To play Indy, you need Cro, Revis, Lowery and Wilson. If the Jets and Ryan expected this... they would have gone shopping for yet another CB. I beleive they thought Revis could be signed... after all, he had 3 years left on his contract. Thery figured they would reward him with a new contract and move on. I think the Jets were totally surprised, and totally unprepared for this holdout. Bottom line.... who the F knows? I have my takle on it, you have yours. It's all guesswork. We just don't know.
if we offer revis a grossly front loaded contract, what do you think revis will do in 3 yrs when his pay drops t0 5-6 mil/season? if only we had some history to go on.....
