Mets must sign Matt Harvey by midnight tonight By Matthew Cerrone on Aug 16, 2010, 10:49 am The deadline to sign all Draft picks is midnight tonight. So far, six of the top seven picks have not signed a contract, including Mets first-round pick RHP Matt Harvey. Www.google.com 2010-8-16 8-57This past weekend, Adam Rubin of ESPN New York said talks with Harvey’s agent, Scott Boras, might last until tonight’s deadline. In a post to Mets Minor League Blog, Toby Hyde says, “I think he’s going to sign. He’s not going to get more money next year if he doesn’t work out a deal this year.” The buzz from Citi Field indicates a deal with Harvey will get worked out, since the team has only spent $1 million on the draft so far. However, sixth-round pick RHP Greg Peavey could choose to return to Oregon State for his senior year, should the Mets not pay him ‘overslot.’ In a post to Mets Today in June, Joe Janish looked at video of Harvey, and concludes: “This kind of a power arm is rare, so it’s understandable why the Mets drafted him. With the right guidance, he could develop into a seriously nasty flamethrower.” For more on Harvey, check out Anthony DiComo’s report for MLB.com. http://www.metsblog.com/2010/08/16/mets-must-sign-matt-harvey-by-midnight-tonight/ It's certainly possible that they will sign him tonight, but my guess is that since they've only spent $1,000,000 on other picks that the Wilpons are essentially broke. I can't see them spending $6 or $7 million at this point. What a disgrace, I hope they sell the team.
Are the other 5 teams who haven't signed their first round picks yet also broke? (My question has nothing to do with wanting the Wilpons to sell the team, by the way.)
Yes I saw that part as well. I was bringing up that they have only spent $1,000,000 on the entire draft up to this point. I'd love to see how that number compares with the Phillies, Red Sox and Yankees.
He is a client of Boras. Boras almost always waits to the last minute to sign his drafted baseball clients knowing that it will maximize the deal.
The Mets have signed every player that they drafted in the first 13 rounds except for the two who are mentioned in the article, so the $1 million figure would be to their credit, not their detriment. Peavey (the 6th round pick) obviously thinks he was drafted much too low, but clearly the rest of baseball disagrees, so he might try to go back to college for his senior year and increase his value. That leaves Harvey, who just like almost every other top draft pick, will go down to the deadline trying to squeeze every dime he can from the team. At this point, there is no story here at all.
Yankees are at a little over $4M right now and will probably be at about $6M by tonight's deadline, which is less than what they spent last year (about $7.2M).
reasonably intelligent thread titles for this thread based on the possibility of the Mets being cash strapped: ARE THE METS BROKE? CAN THE METS NOT AFFORD THEIR DRAFT PICKS? WHY ARE THE METS OPERATING ON SUCH A TIGHT BUDGET? BROKE? Now, here is the most undeniably unintelligent, bordering on retarded, possible thread title for a thread that is not only speculative but posts nothing that validates the concern or assertion that the Mets are broke: METS ARE BROKE quick double check to see what title this thread got. one second. oh, look at that. the mentally challenged thread title.
Right. As if they haven't proven over the last 12 months that they will do anything to prevent spending money. Other then Jason Bay every single other move was based on saving money. They refuse to fire anyone because that might cost them more money. The owner took out a $400 million personal loan to keep the team running. They traded Wagner and gave up 2 draft picks because they were afraid he would accept arbitration and they would be stuck paying him. Last year they were one of the lowest spending teams in the draft. Signing all of your players is great, but they could probably pay over the slot like the Red Sox do and get better players. My point was that they are broke, and they've proven it over and over again. Maybe they cough up the money to sign the 1st round pick tonight but they still probably didn't draft the most talented players due to slot issues. They won't release Perez or Castillo because they are hoping one of them will get hurt and they can get an injury settlement to off set the insane contracts. They would rather keep two awful players on the team then that are killing the team then just take the loss and release them. It all goes back to money and they got destroyed by Madoff. They will never sell the team and it sucks. It's like having Dolan with no money running the Mets.
nobody is saying they aren't broke or the Wilpons don't suck, but not having signed their pick certainly isn't indicative of it, especially considering it is par for the course.
I agree. My point was that they only have spent a $1,000,000 in the draft. Will find out tonight if they have any money if they don't sign the pitcher.
The Mets also signed their 6th round pick, Greg Peavey, who supposedly wanted to be paid over slot. http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindbeaversbeat/2010/08/oregon_state_baseball_pitcher.html The Mets have signed at least their first 19 picks (I'm not sure about Dabias Johnson, their 20th pick).
According to mlbtraderumors.com, Harvey's signing was for about $300,000 over slot. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/08/mets-to-sign-matt-harvey.html
Please excuse my ignorance but didn't the METS organization claim to have lost money on the ponzi scheme but actually made money? Did this ever get clarified?
Yes. Mets profited, nearly every other Wilpon account hit the crapper. The Mets money isn't guaranteed, as the feds will probably come after it. Also, there is a pending class action suit brought by a former employee's wife, and the Mets are down 17 percent ALREADY at the gate. Also, the Mets refinanced a 375m loan on Citi Field that was initially backed by Madoff accounts. -X-
Hopefully the Wilpons are indicted and they have to sell the team. These owners suck and I hate them. I don't even watch games anymore because they are mired in shit. If they blew the whole team up and started with young players and sucked, much like Tampa and the Marlins do, I would watch. This debacle of bullshit that Jeff, Fred, and Minaya put together is a slap in the fans face. Castillo? - why? The Beltran injury? - Disgusting... Delgado last year? WTF! The you throw them going after perez again - after he did nothing and nothing for trade deadline or during the off season. I haven't been to a game since 2007 and won't go back until they start putting a product on the field worth watching. Eff em.
