While knocking out his girlfriend's father, Rodriguez tore a ligament in his thumb and will be sidelined for the duration of the season. It keeps getting better and better with this team.
obviously they won't have to pay out the remainder of the season, and hopefully they can jettison him next season as well.
"When you get in a fight with a drunk you don't hit him with your pitching hand. God, I can't keep giving you these free lessons so quit screwin' around and help me up."
We can only hope that this helps K-rod not reach his option for 2012. This could wind up costing k-rod 17.5 million.
Fire Jerry. Fire Omar. Get Doubleday to buy the team back, or find some new owners, or something. Fix the Mets.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/baseball/mlb/08/16/mets.rodriguez/index.html Mets consider trying to void Rodriguez's contract The Mets are looking into the possibility of voiding closer Francisco Rodriguez's contract, SI.com has learned. If the team is successful in doing so, they could save at least $17 million, and potentially more. They are looking into whether the contract, for $37 million over three years, can be voided based on Rodriguez injuring himself outside the course of play. Rodriguez suffered torn thumb ligaments during a fight with his girlfriend's father. Rodriguez has been charged with assault in the case. Rodriguez has apologized for the incident, but that might not get him off the hook. Team sources suggest the voiding of the contract is something that's on the table for team higher-ups. Rodriguez's salary is $11.5 million in 2010 and also in 2011. He has a $17.5 million vesting option for 2012 with a $3.5 million buyout. That option vests with 100 games finished in 2010 and 2011 combined or 55 games finished in '11, so it's unlikely the option would go into affect anyway. The players union might have a position on this though, as the Mets were only able to suspend Rodriguez initially for two games due to the power of the players union. General manager Omar Minaya said publicly the team didn't regret the contract. But perhaps behind the scenes, there are different thoughts being discussed.
it's going to be a death spiral, lower payroll -> worse performance -> less attendance -> less money -> lower payroll -> worse performance -> less attendance -> etc...
I hope they can void it, it's bullshit that they have to pay this asshole for hurting his hand while beating up a 53 year old man. They should have suspended his ass for the season 1st off, especially after his bullshit in the bullpen a few months ago. I'm so fuicking sick of this team and all the fucking loser players that have. It's disgusting. Seriously if I hadn't invested so much time and money into being a Mets fan I would have broken off our relationship years ago. I can deal with the team sucking but at this point it's pure embarrassment to be a fan of this worthless fucking team.
Funny thing about what you write, my wife is a Yankees fan as is my mother-in-law (a huge Yankee fan) and I've said repeatedly that there's no way I'd let my kids become Yankee fans....I hate to say this but, do I really make my kids go through what we all go through? It's becoming a serious and valid question.
It's the Mets. They'll void it and then sign him to a new 5 year deal worth $50 Million. Savings, baby!
they should just do an Al Davis and void it and let the players union file a complaint or lawsuit or whatever and make the argument why this non-baseball injury somehow doesn't allow the Mets to do so. force them to justify his beating up a 50 year old man.
Never a Yankee fan but we live on the left coast and teams like the A's, Padres, Giants, Dodgers and Rockies all seem to be run much better then the Mets. Now the Dbacks and Mariners seem to be as inept as the Mets. It's funny you mention the pushing though as I have always hated the Lakers but am pushing my son into rooting for them.
maybe they will get it voided http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=5469537 Arbitrator rules against Shawn ChaconEmail Print Comments Associated Press HOUSTON -- Shawn Chacon's grievance against the Houston Astros has been denied. Chacon The players' association filed the grievance after his contract was terminated two years ago, saying the decision was without just cause. Arbitrator Shyam Das found that the Astros were within their rights to terminate Chacon's contract without further compensation after he assaulted general manager Ed Wade on June 25, 2008. The team announced the decision Monday. Chacon had a $2 million salary in 2008 and the termination of the contract kept him from receiving $983,607. He was suspended from the team after shoving Wade to the floor before a game. Wade said he had asked Chacon to come into former manager Cecil Cooper's office for a meeting and he refused, leading to the incident.
