One friend on another NFL team suggests Wes Welker is hustling back from ACL surgery because he wants a new contract from the Patriots.

"I think he’s crazy," said the other player. "He wants a new deal, and the Patriots have Julian Edelman lined up as his replacement. If I were Wes, I wouldn’t even consider coming back until October." Welker refused to be drawn in, responding, "I've got two years left on my deal. I'm just here to play ball. I just worry about doing my job and let everything else take care of itself."
    Yahoo! Sports.

His rushing back into the lineup would refute something like this, but the guy is 29 & with the recent injury he probably realizes that he should be thinking about setting himself up for the final contract.

I'm not a fan of the guy, but have to admit his #s are great, effort is topnotch, catches everything. Certainly worth more than the 5yr $18 million contract he signed when he was trying to prove himself.

How can you not be a fan of Welker? He epitomizes everything that it means to be a hard working, dedicated player who is tough as nails.

I've actually been saying for years on the Pats forum how the front office should do right by him and up his deal, because the deal they got him into is practically slavery in today's NFL for a guy with his production.

I also thought the original deal was 7 years for 17 million? He deserves a pay raise, thats for sure.

He's just one of those guys that pisses you off if you're the fan of an opposing team.

I'm not a fan because he's a Patsy. In this scenario, hatred is the ultimate sign of respect.

Hopefully his agents are Schwartz and Feinsod.

He's not leaving for awhile, son.

I hate the prick and like him at the same time. Can't help but be entertained by how he puts his heart on his sleeves.

I always felt the same exact way about Chrebet. I know exactly what you mean.

As for Welker's deal, I know it's a little naive but he really doesn't seem like the type at all who would hold out or demand a new deal. Maybe the injury was an eye-opener, I don't know. But it just doesn't seem in character for him. He's really quiet, etc.

I don't understand. Why isn't he holding out and sitting at home? Isn't that what you're supposed to do when you want a new deal?

Especially when he was originally on your team.... gotta love Saban handing his buddy Belli a quality player for nothing.

 You're just a "plays the game the right way" away from hitting every single short white guy platitude.

Don't get me wrong, Welker's a great player. It just cracks me up how the same adjectives constantly pop up to describe every short white athlete, from Welker to Pedroia to Chrebet to Danny freaking Woodhead.

Maybe he's beginning to see how the PATS operate -- i.e. Mankins, Seymour, Vrabel.
The guy had a lot of time laying in bed to think.
Someone got in his ear to tell him he's no longer that undrafted longshot trying to make the team --------- he's an All-Pro.
And there's nothing wrong with getting paid appropriately.
The days of guys taking less money to play on the PATS because it offers the best chances of a ring are over.
Time to show me the money.

Demanding a new contract after coming back from a horrific leg injury? Sounds like his agent is Alvin Keels.
