Because if he does not report by week 10 he does not get credit for the year on his contract. If he's in by week 10 then he gets credit for having fulfilled year 4 of his contract, not year 4 of his NFL experience due to the special rules in place this season - that date is tonight at midnight, but year 4 of the contract. He can opt out of his contract if he's in by week 10. He can't opt out next year, triggering the Jet's option to buyback the last two years, if he stays out past week 10. In that scenario he's back on the 1 million year of the contract again.

There's a point at which Revis must blink or he's really going to screw the pooch and week 10 of the season is that moment.

It's August 10th, not week 10. He has a hour and 15 minutes.

He can no longer opt out of the contract due to missing a mandatory practice (i.e. day 1 of training camp).

As a matter of fact he has screwed the pooch so bad that he is only owed $650k for year 5 now it seems.

Like I said, I could see either Washington or Oakland going for him hard. Both owners covet corners, and have a history of treating draft picks like Starburst.

I just think the possibility exists, regardless of what Tanny says publicly. If the Patriots can trade Seymour, the Jets can trade Revis.

when our gm says something, the total opposite happens.

"kerry rhodes will get his roster bonus"- traded

"i expect leon to be here long term" - traded

sorry but my gut feeling is we will trade him and get ripped off

no, August 10th is his league service, not his contract year.

No, that's the date at which he loses credit for a year's service. Under normal circumstances that would mean that he could not become an RFA next year, lacking the necessary four years in the NFL to do so. However the contract he signed with the Jets explicitly allows him to opt out of the contract after he has fulfilled the fourth season of the contract and does not mention any other limitation. The Jets then have the option to buy the last two years back for a fixed price. If they fail to do so then Darrelle Revis is no longer under contract to the New York Jets. Note that Revis will not have an NFL CBA approved route to RFA after midnight tonight, but he will have a specific Jets contract option that would lead to that.

I'm almost certain that that is how it actually would work. The Jets are prohibited from retaining him by using the franchise tag, again explicitly spelled out in the contract. Assuming they chose not to buy back the two years their only option would be to extend a tender on his services at that point and let him test the market. I don't believe that Revis contract explicitly prevents the Jets from extending a tender to him.

Then we probably wind up in court with the Jets claiming that they have Revis bound under a normal free agent tender and Revis claiming that his contract explicitly makes him free after he has fulfilled the fourth year of the contract and that the Jets remedy is to buy back the two years, which if they have not done at that point puts the court in the position of deciding one way or the other on Darrelle Revis status.

If Revis holds out past the 10th game then he has not fulfilled the fourth year of his contract and he can't set any of the above in motion because he is not contractually allowed to opt out at that point. He'd have to come back in 2011 by game 10 to get that option enabled and fulfill the fourth year of his contract then.

The lack of a franchise tag is also tied to the buyback. Revis cannot void the contract due to the holdout. All discussion of the void and buyback are moot at this point.

No, he can still opt out but the Jets buyback is no longer guaranteed money at the time it is exercised. The money just became unguaranteed, so the Jets still buy back 2011 for $5mil and 2012 for $15mil they just have the ability to cut him at some point during those seasons without owing him the remainder of what is due on his buy back when they do so. Obviously they only do that if he gets hurt. They can also exercise the buyback, play him for $5mil in 2011 and then trade him without having to pay him the $15mil due for 2012. Guaranteed money is always paid by the trading team before the trade is approved. This is why roster bonuses due in a contract all accelerate immediately and are paid out before a player is traded.

Jets don't seem to negotiate with hold outs. Have they renegotiated with hold outs in the past?

Tannenbaum was on with Buttle and Bernstein on 1050 tonight and clearly described the dispute. There is a major difference in what the Revis team thinks he is worth and what the Jets think Revis is worth. Tannenbaum said that you can't even begin talking about signing bonuses and salaries and the like until the team and the player agree on what the player should be paid annually. It is not hard to figure out what is happening here and why the Revis team is saying the Jets have not made an offer that included guaranteed money. It is because Revis is still insisting that he be the highest paid CB in the NFL, which means he wants $15 million a year plus and the Jets, rightfully, are not willing to go there just because the Raiders are idiots. There is your dispute and there is the reason for the hold out. Tannenbaum stated that every contract in NFL history started with an agreement as to what the player will be paid in total dollars before guaranteed money, bonuses, and salaries are determined. Schwartz is full of crap with his whining about receiving no offers or guaranteed money from the Jets because he won't budge from the $15 million + demand.

Revis wants his $15 million plus 50 cents to be paid more than Asomugha. Unless and until he gets off that number, the Jets are right to hold their ground and wait him out. Why should the Jets be handcuffed by Al Davis' stupidity??? That is all this about. It is not about this year's $1 million salary or Leon Washington or guaranteed money - all smokescreens thrown out by Schwartz & Co. It is about Revis' ego and him wanting to be paid a certain sum. I know how good Revis is and all, but if the Jets give in to this demand, they can kiss any future good bye because they will not be able to afford other players. The Jets are justified in holding the line. No CB is worth that much and it is not worth destroying the salary structure of the team by giving in. How do the Jets avoid paying Mangold and Harris and others down the line the same money? Let Revis rot at home for a while and if he wants to throw away a year of an NFL career, then let him be the idiot.

I have lost all respect for Revis. The Jets are on the verge of something great and he is wrecking it for purely selfish, greedy reasons. Tannenbaum has only had trouble with Schwartz clients. Everybody else has been timely and fairly paid. What does that tell you?????
