Is this part of Woody's national El Cheapo Tour? The one where he tells the papers and TV "I'm Not Cheap"?
Woody said last week that cash flow has never been a problem. So if the money's there, what he's saying by offering Revis zero guaranteed dollars is: We have 20 M guaranteed for Vag. Gholston, boatloads of cash for unproven free agents like Calvin Pace, and greenbacks to extend Rex, Christmas tree and the rest of management, but for our best player, the best defensive player in the NFL the message is: eat sh-t and die.
Revis should accept playing for $5 M a year, with little or none of it guaranteed? Come on. You saw how quickly the organization jettisoned Leon after giving his heart and soul to the team, and after "doing the right thing" by not holding out last season when he had every reason to. I want him in camp as badly as the next fan, but the Jets are coming across here like complete douchebags.
Why doesn't everybody understand that the Jets cannot offer "fully guaranteed" money this season? There is rules preventing them from doing so.
People refuse to read anything and then expect their opinions to be good and profound. How is Woody cheap again? He does nothing but pour cash into this team and has kept them more relevant in the decade he's owned them than Hess ever did. The cheap argument is dead and lost. Get over it.
They can get around that by giving him a big signing bonus. I'm sure Revis and his agent would accept a little bit less guaranteed over the life of the contract in exchange for a lump sum payment right now.
Well if he's not cheap, then he's getting bad advice from Tannenbaum. Get over what? The fact that Vagina Gholston got $20 M guaranteed and guys like Eric Smith are in line to make more money than Revis, and you put the blame on Revis for wanting fair market compensation? Doubtless Revis is getting bad advice on his side, too. But Woody is the owner. He writes the checks. He can force Tannenbaum's hand. It doesn't sound as if Tannenbaum is willing to give any ground at all.
Revis had a $21 million bonus on the way and has 3 years left on his contract. Maybe Leon should have held out, maybe not, but it was a completely different situation. Leon's agent has a long and ugly track record and there's no doubt in my mind that he shares most, if not all, the blame for screwing Leon over.
Yeah, and if the Jets give Revis a big signing bonus, his yearly salary would be lower for every year except from 2010. In a few years, he will be pulling the same shit when his salary is not the highest in the league. Also, with the potential lockout next season, paying a player millions up front is not the best idea.
So if nothing gets done and Revis sits out the entire season, you'd still support management 100%?? Even with all the upfront money he received his first 3 years, Tannenbaum and Woody are on the record as admitting that "Darrelle has outperformed his contract." If Revis suffers a season-ending injury like Leon, he's screwed. He has to think about his family and his own future. I'm surprised so many of you are on the side of the corporation on this one. He's using the only leverage he's got.
If he did "pull the same sh-t in a few years," and the Jets decide it's not worth keeping him, there would teams lining up from Florham Park to Manhattan to trade for the guy. The Jets would still have a lot of leverage.
That "corporation" is the New York Jets, a team which we all follow. I only side with the players if the FO is seriously screwing them. In this case, they are not screwing Revis. This is mostly because there seems to be no good and reasonable option for both sides. The FO's hands are simply tied this year. Uncle Sean Gilbert has not a clue on giving Revis advice about holding out in an uncapped 2010.
Show me a contract that was signed this offseason with a gigantic signing bonus. Look at Brick's contract, there is no fully guaranteed money in it. I want Revis signed as much as anybody, but there are ways to do it without a huge signing bonus.
If he gets screwed now then it's his own fault. He had some $21 million in guaranteed money left in his contract. As in, if he got injured, he still would have seen that 21 million dollars. But he chose to un-guarantee it by sitting out.
The Jets haven't bought back his final 2 years yet, that would take place at the end of the season. Even if Revis didn't hold out, he wouldn't have seen that $21 mil if he had a serious injury.
Wow. Tanny does not hold the final say here. Its Woody. This isn't all on Tanny. I don't know why you'd think that. Gholston restructured, Smith is tendered. Where the fuck did I put the blame on Revis?
