Granted this is depressing but it is what it is folks. Even if this shit wasnt going on and Revis was in camp, lets say he hurts himself and is gone for the year, I wouldnt feel leke were totally fucked. Both sides are being stupid IMO. If Revis sits this entire year without a new deal and next year is a strike year he is big time fucked. At the same time, as someone mentioned, Woody should not be fucking around this year. Get the guy here on a short term deal and worry about the rest later. The Jets really needed him to lock down guys to get pressure on the Qb last year. We couldnt do shit with four man fronts so Rex had to do the crazy ass blitzing using the DB's. If the addition of Taylor helps us get to the QB without sending 6/7 guys and we dont have Revis things should be ok...not great but ok. If we dont get 24 and Taylor doesnt help the pass rush...well then we may be fucked. Teams have won without a lock down corner. For the fan bse consider him gone and move on.
Man this has shades of the Emmitt Smith debacle with the Cowboys. When he held out and they tanked the first few weeks and then Jerry Jones opened the checkbook immediately... What an absolutely shitty thing to have hanging over this team as they embark on what has all the makings of a special year.
He's a cornerback. It's not like the defense falls apart without him. My guess is he's played his last game for the Jets and we'll be fine without him. It's possible that either Cromartie or Wilson will turn out to be toast but it doesn't look like that at this point. It's possible that Edelman will burn Lowery a bunch in the middle of the field and cause issues. It's more likely that the Jets defense will just keep performing at a relatively high level and the season will come down to Sanchez, which is where it has always rested anyway.
Oh stop it with the sarcasm. This has been an ongoing fight and neither side can come to any sort of agreement. Revis has made is clear that he wants to be the league's top paid corner, and although Aso's contract is ridiculous, it doesn't seem there is any middle ground to go on. Therefore, the jets best option is to just give Revis what he wants and deal with the repercussions later. It's a much better idea to give in and pay him than have him sit out the entire season with a hole in our defense.
Jets sent Revis an offer. Revis camp rejected it. Revis camp sent the Jets a counteroffer, Jets camp rejected it. When you put it that way it just sounds like standard negotiating, doesn't it? By saying that a deal is unlikely until after the season begins the Jets are daring the Revis camp's hand to hold out longer and risk losing any and all leverage. I'm not sure if Revis is ready to hold out all season. The Jets will most likely send another counteroffer their way, and I'm confident that the Revis camp will blink first.
No, this really is not the best option. If the Jets give Revis Aso-type money it will drive the price for Mangold and Harris higher than it otherwise would be. We'll be hearing Tannenbaum say, sadly, as both of those guys leave, that you can't afford to pay everybody and the Jets already have huge deals in place for Sanchez and Revis. If the Jets had nobody to play cornerback then you could make an argument that Darrelle Revis was worth as much money as they had to pay him to avoid putting Drew Coleman on the field as a starter. That's not the situation. The Jets have one corner who has been very good in the past and who is heading into his prime years in Cromartie and they have a #1 pick on the other side, who many people felt was the best corner in this year's draft. They have options. To pay Revis through the nose for his services when they have other options is just silly. It's bad business and it will come back to haunt them down the road. Tannenbaum and Woody made a huge mistake proactively trying to renegotiate Revis contract when he had 3 years to go and they had all the leverage. That's what has put Revis in the position of shutting down the season and waiting them out. Hopefully they learned something and we don't have to deal with this situation with Shonn Greene or Kyle Wilson down the road.
Sorry Revis.....I side with the Jets. CB (no matter how good) cannot break your entire salary structure. Doing so fixes a problem today, but creates one tomorrow. Give him an Asomugha-esque deal and you are looking at similar headaches from Mangold and Harris in the future. Tannenbaum has done a great job of bringing in a lot of good players. That gives us some flexibility. Last year, the Jets lost Jenkins and the defense was still great. If we loose Revis, it will hurt in the short-term, but the team will remain better off for the long-term. This year we have to hope the offense will make up for some of what we lack on defense. People are looking at the worst case scenario of the Jets losing early and caving. Think about the reverse.....Revis' holdout extends to the regular season and the Jets win their first 3 games. Then we might see some real closing speed....by his agents.
Let's not go crazy and blame Woody and Tanny for telling Revis that they wanted to give him a new contract. I'm pretty sure Revis was prepared to do this anyway. There's no chance he was going to play 2010 for $1 million after the season he just had.
How will Revis FEED his family when he holds out this season and theres no football in 2011. Its going to be so tough, they will have to eat Taco Bell every night. I feel so bad for him. Parents got me an authetic retro Revis jersey, wont be wearing that again. Sucks man he went from fan favorite, to fans being really disappointed in him. He went about this all the wrong way

Yes, but if the Jets just sit mum it would have put all the pressure on Revis and his agents to make an offer that gets them off of that 1 million dollar season. As soon as Tannenbaum made the first move he gave the Revis camp power they did not deserve to have based on the current contractual situation. That's deal-making 101, always make the other guy approach you if you have the upperhand in the negotiations. Going to them first gives away the mojo and you can never get it back. If the Jets just sit mum last January then Revis and company have to come to them or play on the existing contract.
agreed. Woody is using the press to tell Revis that if they don't budge on total compensation nothing is going to happen and he will not play. For three years or so. ONE THING I DEFINITELY DON'T WANT TO SEE: Revis playing for the Patriots or Dolphins. Bills is fine. We can still beat them.
