I'm with you, I don't really know what he has in mind. I don't like the idea of Mangold, Harris, Edwards/Holmes, and Cromartie all reaching the end of the season without contracts. Recently, free agents have been getting some huge contracts, and I can see a bidding war taking place for any one of these players. For now, I will put my faith in Tannenbaum, as he surprises us every season. I am sure he's thought this through.
Who? Not on the magnitude that we are. By Mangold doing this he will without a doubt receive more guaranteed money. That is probably what was said to him, either take a deal like Brick's or wait and get a much better deal.
Holmes and Harris are RFA's, Mangold, Pool, and Edwards are FA's. A lot depends on how this season turns out. If we blow teams away and win a SB, I'm sure they'll want to stick around for something special. At least I would think so.
In that case we can franchise Mangold and give Harris the high tender. No need to sign either one now.
We are not alone in this, most teams are saying the same things - unless the new deal gets done everyone is gonna have to wait - its also a smart move from the owners as there are going to be a lot of high profile vet players pushing the players union to get a deal done.
It seems like the logical conclusion that neither will get a deal until after the season, but no where in that article is there a quote from Tanny saying as much. Other logical conclusions are that he is waiting for the Revis deal to get done so he knows what he's working with, or that he's waiting for the CBA to get done for the same reason.
Unfortunately, if a CBA gets worked out and they maintain the same rules on FA, they would ALL be unrestricted. It seems possible to me that Harris and Mangold are being told to wait until after the season to manage expectations. Tanny has to have learned from this situation about what can happen when you make promises to players and give them timetables. I'd imagine he's giving them a date of next offseason but fully intends to start working on new deals as soon as a CBA is reached, if that happens during the season.
So when the new CBA is in place all current RFA's become FA's? Why would that happen? Is that already a written rule somewhere? If that is the case it's going to be a bonanza next year around here.
There is no chance in hell we lose Mangold, even if they can't come to a resolution on a contract he'll be franchised.
That's why I said IF they use the same FA rules under a new CBA. The FA determinations would be made based on the rules for 2011, not the fact that 2010 was an uncapped year. I expect that the rules for a new CBA become very interesting with widescale changes to the rookie pay structure. It wouldn't surprise me to see the players' union fight any attempts to make the RFA restrictions extend past year 3 under a new CBA.
If there is even still a Franchise tag the next year there is football. This seems like a risky move for the Jets, but maybe so is signing another offensive lineman to a big contract without knowing what the next CBA will look like. Honestly, I would rather them take the chance and get Mangold locked up. Hopefully this doesn't turn into another Mankins/Revis type situation for the Jets in the future. Mangold is the shit, and I'm very glad he's in camp right now helping out Slauson and Ducasse.
Yeah, I was just posting for reference. I imagine by putting a rookie payscale in that would be a major part of it too.
I'd be shocked if they got rid of the franchise tag. And idk what the deal is regarding the uncertainty of the CBA but isn't there some clause in this uncapped year that essentially makes signing Mangold and Harris impossible?
I really hope they get the deal sorted, I would hate to see the NFL end up like soccer with a handful of clubs owned by very wealthy backers just making a joke of the whole thing and leading to massively unbalanced leagues.
IMHO Woody & Tanny are pulling the wool over the fans eyes with that CBA crapola. It is plain & simple Woody having zipped up the purse strings. Other teams are having no problems resigning players or giving players new deals other then the NYJs. See Texans,Titans & Broncs just to name a few
They resigned / restructured their players' respective contracts, but what about the Chargers and Patriots? Two elite teams that are in midst of their players not suiting up this season - Vincent Jackson - Marcus McNeill - Logan Mankins - Shawne Merriman Just to name a few I'm sure we had deals on the table for Revis, if this Aso fiasco never happened, Revis would of been signed by now
I don't know that I necessarily agree with this... other teams around the league haven't been hoarding high profile talent like the Jets have... Further, its not easy to just shell out the money for what will be one of the richest contracts ever signed in Pro Sports history with Revis. Forgetting the fact of what Aso got from the Failders, Aso's deal was only a 3 year contract... whatever Revis does get is going to be around the 7 year range... it's totally understandable that this is going to be a slow drawn out process. Both sides are looking out for their own best interests... business as it should be done.
If we win the Super Bowl this season, and we let Mangold get away from us, I'm going to be pissed the fuck off.
Yeah that is a coulda, woulda, shoulda but & the BIG but the Aso deal is done now & is the benchmark for players at his position plain & simple.
