I hope Slauson gets the nod, each day this Ducasse guy starts to remind of Switowsky from The Longest Yard..."Can you teach me the football?" thats the image i get in my head everytime i hear someone talk about Vlad
WDF? Sorry but that is some stupid crap to say. What makes you think this guy is an idiot? Because he is a big ugly guy from a third world country? Come on man, give the guy a chance before you label him as a mental retard
lol i'm not making him out to be a retard. i'm making him out to be far too inexperienced to be a rookie starting LG in the NFL, i believe that the best spot for him would be to take over Damien Woody's spot at RT, he doesn't have to worry about pulling around and other techniques of gaurds, he can just focus on pass protection and straight ahead run blocking, which he showed in college he is pretty stout at. keep in mind that Vlad didn't know ANYTHING about football until he was a SENIOR IN HIGH SCHOOL. oh and BTW, Switowsky was my favorite character in Longest Yard.
This comment bothers me: Although Ducasse and Slauson are both a step slower than Faneca, they will have capable tutors in Mangold, Damien Woody, D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Brandon Moore. Mangold agreed that Slauson has the edge right now. Will either one of these guys be fast enough to pull? Where did this comment come from, the writer or a coach? "a step slower" in the NFL is a big deal. If this is true, I have to ask again, why cut Fanecca since we had to pay him 5 mil out if the what, 15mil he had coming? If this was nothing more than a salary cut in an uncapped year, knowingly creating a hole in the O line... If they can't pull, they had better be able to power block better than Fanecca. And the playbook had better change some too. Like, one of these guys had better be able to pass block, and they better be throwing a lot more than they did last year. Now I'm starting to get worried.
LG has me worried............... remember the last time we got rid of starting LG ...that didnt work out so good
Whoever does win the job it'll really accelerate their growth being plugged in between 2 All-Pro linemen.
# Dustin Keller 08/07/2010 04:53 PM ET Left Guard Matt Slauson wearing the latest in football sports bras..fashionable???I think not http://twitpic.com/2ckgvk I don't want our starting LG wearing a bra, go Ducasse.
TBJ - I have the same worry and have all along. My only reasonable conclusion about this move is that they wanted to improve the pass blocking, even if it came at the cost of taking away from the running game. It seems to me that the FO made a conscious decision to move to more of a passing attack this season. Holmes, Tomlinson, McKnight - no backup "thumper" and they got rid of Faneca presumably because of his declining pass blocking skills all lead me to believe this. The only move they made to improve the running game was to draft a fullback, and he might not even play fullback this season. Rex can scream ground and pound from the podium all he wants, but the moves the Jets have made all indicate otherwise. They must have supreme confidence that all of Sanchez' off season work is going to pay large, immediate dividends. It kind of makes sense if you think about it. Even on the defensive side of the ball, all the moves were focused on the secondary. At face value that's nothing to really make an issue out of because Rex loves DB's and the scheme he implemented here generates pressure with DB's. All the DB's are nice, but the trenches really needed some talented youth and teams that beat us last year mostly did it with the running game. One effective way to stop an opposing rushing attack is to eliminate it by forcing them to pass the ball. With a quick strike passing offense that can generate points quickly, we may be able to take opposing teams running games away without having to play great run defense.
Yes I remember, and those circumstances were completely different. It didn't work out well because we traded Kendall when we had no one to replace him but training camp fodder. Slauson and Ducasse were drafted to play. If your biggest concern is that the better of the two will end up playing like Adrien fucking Clarke then trust me, you have nothing to worry about.
I think they meant mentally. Those tutors can't teach them how to get off the line faster like Faneca did physically, but they can tutor those two with game experience. The writer should have specified.
I agree, and I also think this team is designed to score first and then keep the lead. That's going to be their strength. The team is designed to score first, and have the other team catch up by passing the ball, not running the ball, thus falling into Rex's strength with pressuring the QB.
of course they made the decision to be more of a passing attack, we had no balance last year ... the mere threat of being a more balanced team is, in fact, a move to improve the run game. hopefully there wont be 8-9 in the box as often as last year also, id argue that naming greene the starter is a move to improve the rushing game. when youre on top of the league in a category, complacency can be just as detrimental as change (same reason we overhauled the secondary) of the 8 games we lost last year, id say that only two were because of the run D (1st mia and jax, although we shut down the run in the second half of jax) ... we lost just as many games because of the slot receiver as we did because of the run. we are far better on the d-line than people realize
A lot of players wear shirts like that during camp because of the heat. They cut the shirt the length of their shoulder pads.
Both guys looked good in the scrimmage yesterday and I am fairly certain Slauson in particular got reps at RT for the 2nd team, and even got a few snaps at RG with the 3's, while Ducasse worked only at LG.
We're talking about 2 guys that weigh over 315 pounds. This move was not made to take a notch away from the running game.Quite the contrary. I heard an interview w/ Bart Scott who said that both Ducasse and Slauson are very powerful. Faneca was not only struggling w/ pass protection, he also was starting to lose his edge as a in line drive blocker. Callahan makes mention to Faneca playing well w/ no one in front of him and while pulling. This is correct. Faneca is and always was very agile in open space..that's always been his strength. But the zone system Callahan has employed, along w/ Rex's theory of a true "Ground and pound" blocking philosophy is basically your lineman taking 1 or 2 steps to the left or to the right, engaging contact and using your strength to push the opposition backward. This is true POWER football. Punish the opposition into submission. Sure, they will throw some pulling into the mix b/c they have so much talent on the interior but in the grand scheme of things Faneca was not ideal for this system any longer. He didn't have velocity out of his stance and he no longer had the strength to drive/punish defenders off the LOS. I haven't seen any of Ducasse or Slauson since TC started. I can say after watching film of Ducasse in college..the guy did an awful lot of pulling for Umass.I thought he pulled extremely well for his size on film. Not a lot of guys as big as him can pull like that. That can be devastating for a defense. He also had a good base, good feet and a powerful pop.Needs to get a little quicker off the snap. I'm not making any predictions or saying he'll be anywhere close to the player..but his style reminded me a little bit of Larry Allen..who by the way was also a small school College guy out of Sarasota State. There will be a learning curve for both these linemen. And again, I haven't seen any of them thus far to have a prognosis. But what I will say is that both of them fit the ground and pound system a lot better than Faneca did.
