Question. What happens if the holdout goes into the season. Rex said if he shows up before the 1st game he will play. What if he shows up for the 3rd game? How does a holdout work once the season has started? Also, what happens if he holds out the whole season? Can he go play for another team? Can the jets trade him? How much would the jets have to pay him next year if he sat out htis season?
Thurman disagreed with that, and he would know because he played the position. He said if he missed TC, he won't be ready until midseason.
except you are ignoring the fact that he could have simply come to training and played this year, and had he gotten hurt would have still been owed a guaranteed $20 million, so it wasn't as if the risk of injury this season left him with nothing. now, if the Jets take a hardline stance with him and don't give in, he will have to come back and play without that guaranteed money, and the risk of injury is now more detrimental. his position in inherently weakened by that fact. the only recourse he has is not to play, but considering he has 3 years left on his contract, that isn't much leverage at all, because the Jets could simply let him sit. he has zero leverage beyond the fact that the Jets would like him to be on the team. but the Jets hold all the cards. and let's say hypothetically the season starts and the D is just out of this world without him. he will have even less leverage. the only way this works out for Revis is if he signs a fair contract for his ability that is more than he is currently making. the problem is that Revis apparently wants an absurd contract, and he has no leverage to obtain it.
he can hold out and not get paid and not play and get fined. if thats what he wants to do. and the ironic thing is that at some point, the longer he holds out the less valuable he is to the team. He has some leverage, but its not great leverage. In his mind perhaps he thinks its better leverage than it really is. So convincing him of the reality of the situation maybe a problematic impediment to getting a deal done. But who knows? for all we know he has already agreed to a scenario w/hard knocks and the jets.
he was on the team last year. they barely made the playoffs and didn't make the SB. He's a great player, but he is one player and he doesn't win games by himself.
Correct me if I am wrong here, but wasn't Revis only guaranteed that $20 million if the Jets bought back the option at the end of this season? If he had a career ending injury, the Jets had the option of not buying back his contract, no?
I may be mistaken about the contract, that would be better answered by someone who is more informed of these technicalities. but, I am willing to bet the Jets were more than happy to guarantee it if he reported and played, so in the end that was probably not an issue to be concerned about. if the Jets weren't willing to even enact that guarantee, than that changes the entire dynamics of the negotiations between them and makes them look far worse than Revis.
I think Revis will continue to be stubborn and both sides will stand tall at where they are at. By the time the 3rd or 4th preseason game rolls around I think somebody gives in.
If we don't have Revis on September 13th vs Baltimore, watching that defense is not going to be the same. When he came off the field last year, the D would shatter and give up some type of decent or good play. Revis is the heart and soul of this Jets team. This is a complete disaster right now, hopefully this will be the most frustrating thing us Jet fans will have to deal with this season
no, paying Revis an amount the prevents the Jets from keeping numerous key players would be a disaster. this is simply a minor bump.
That would be because the defense was not prepared for that. You can be sure Rex will have them ready for that now, he'll have all of TC to do it.
I'm going to tentatively predict that Revis will be back on the 10th, but I also didn't think he would hold out so who knows?
how do you even know what wilson is? Yeah i think hes going to be a stellar player, but what if hes not, and CRO??? He was the one who didn't wanna tackle last year, and he had a down year last year anyway, although I do too think he will be good, but these guys are not gurantees like Revis is
so everytime the jets have one of the best players in the league demanding high cash, you wanna trade them or let them sit out, which do you think is better?
It seems to me that the Jets need to give an ultimatum type scenario to Revis, and tell him he has three options: 1. Sign the short term deal we provided you 2. Sign the long term deal we offered you 3. Sign neither and we will we expect you to play out the contract you have. We will fine you an suspend you according to CBA rules as long as the hold out continue. If you stay out after Aug 10 you lose the year of eligibility and WE WILL exercise all RFA and UFA options available including multiple years of the franchise TAG so you are going to play for the Jets for 5 years or more. You can continue to hold out and even for the season, but we will not negotiate any further and if you continue to listen to bad advice and hold out you can wind up with no further career in the NFL. We WILL NOT trade you.
