I think we have all cursed Brian Schotteneimer for conservative play calling can he, with all these offensive tools and proven talent put a game plan together that can control a young QB but utilize all the talent he has to work with.
Schott is conservative but he's not Paul Hackett. Schott's play-calling will be determined by Sanchez' progress. We will (I hope) still be a run-first offense, but maybe this year we can open things up a little more with a 2nd year Sanchez and two more weapons (Holmes, LT).
Great thread not It was never conservative playcalling. It was horrific "time and place" playcalling. Right ideas at the wrong time, and the refusal to keep it simple when it needed to be, while overwhelming a young QB with limited college experience. At the end of the season and in the playoffs Schotty turned it around. It was most prevalent after Rex got involved in offensive meetings. I can see it continuing this year with sanchez's progression. Loving schotty is a long shot for me, but liking him is something I've come around to.
Well this is the first time since 06-07 that Schotty's had the same starting QB in consecutive seasons. I think we should all give him a chance.
Exactly. Sometimes he's too conservative but the real problem is he makes a habit of calling fancy plays when it's absolutely unnecessary. When something isn't working he has trouble thinking outside the box, yet when we're marching down the field a la Rex's "ground and pound" he decides it's time to get fancy.. basically outright abandoning a successful tactic. Some of his plays are ingenious but his timing is infuriating.
:rofl::rofl: "Run the ball here, a good ground game will open the passing game and allow your quarterback opportunities to make some plays" good 'ole Madden.
So what you're saying is when it works it's genius and when it doesn't you get frustrated. Hindsight is 20/20. The double-reverse needs to be ripped out of that playbook I can't stand that bullshit. Our 2009 offense (run heavy) with a slightly more vertical pass attack would be nice to see. Keller needs to be utilized more, maybe even as an H-Back. LT can catch passes as well.
No, I'm saying he has creative plays in his playbook but he has a habit of using them when they are completely unnecessary and often too risky, especially with a rookie QB under center.
This is exactly what I'm talking about . Can he handle and make the right choices and not the 3rd and long draw play...
How about more 4th down fake? i remember we did it twice vs the dolphins and both worked. We never tried it again for the rest of the season. That had me scratching my head.
