Too much text in a small space which makes me not want to read it, so I'm going to be an asshole and post about my experience in this thread.
I was lazy to read all of that but I will say that Mangold should be priority #1 in terms of players to extend. Here's a question: What happens if Revis doesn't have a new contract by Week 1? And down the road.... if Cromartie and Wilson perform do they make Revis tradeable? If Cromartie and Wilson get it done, trading Revis could actually benefit the team more than extending him at a ridiculous price.
To maintain your attention until I feel like posting more, you can watch this 1 second Youtube video of NBA C DJ MBenga saying "Tacos" It gets better after the 20th time....trust me:
The Jets should have made it clear to Revis and his agents that this was the case before they re-opened contract negotiations. This semi-holdout and angry negotiation on the part of Revis is based at least partly on some really stupid things that Tannenbaum and Ryan said before they even actually opened negotiations. If I'm Darrelle Revis and I hear the Jets say "he's the best CB in football and deserves the best contract" then I'm thinking I'm going to get that contract even if it ain't so. The Jets should have said "we aren't going to do an Asomugha level contract while Darrelle has 3 years left on his contract. We're open to a more sane renegotiation if Darrelle wants to do that right now." Would have solved a lot of problems if they did that. BTW, I don't think the Jets can afford (cap-wise) to make Revis the highest paid CB in football so I'm certainly not suggesting that their poor choice of words early on needs to be backed up now. They're going to have to muddle through this somehow, hopefully without being forced to deal Revis. I don't think the Jets have this option. The contract specifically says they cannot franchise Revis if the contract voids and they choose to buyback the years. Even if they could franchise Revis after 2012 that would still be at 16.5 million or something along those lines (15 million + 10%?), 2014 would be at 18.15 million, all of this assuming the new CBA still has a franchise player provision in it which I'm beginning to think is doubtful.
the difference between what revis wants and what tanny is offering is only about $4m/yr. if we save the $4m i don't think that's enough to 'keep' 4 or 5 star o-line and d-line players. bart scott makes $8m/yr, so we are only talking about loosing 1/2 a bart scott in order to pay revis the full $16, not losing half the team. gholston is costing us over twice the extra that revis wants.
I believe that after the two year buyback they can franchise him. Aso's contract will be done by 2012 and unless senile Al wants to give him another ridiculous contract (assuming Davis is still alive and has the legal capacity to enter into contracts), it shouldn't count for purposes of franchising Revis. In any event, as it becomes more obvious that the Jets are willing to let Revis play out his contract, Revis and his agent will have a lot more incentive to get a deal done. Remember football is a violent game and what happened to Leon can happen to Revis too. If Revis holds out, I think he loses the right to void the last two years of the contract and trigger the two year buyback provisions with the guarantees. That's why Revis won't hold out.
The contract says, according to numerous posts in the forum and external stories, that the Jets can not use the franchise or transitional tags if they exercise the buy back option.
What I'd read said they can't franchise him instead of exercising the buy back option, but that after the buy back they could franchise him.
Everyone needs to stop complaining and play and let the jets have all of these players return so were stacked for years to come!!
