What the fuck is your problem? Yeah, it is that simple. Sorry the Yankees didn't get Lee - don't kill yourself. I watched Smoak play at Carolina. He's a great power hitter. I think he'll develop into a damn good first baseman.
The Mariners looked like they were going to contend for a division title - that's why they traded for Cliff Lee. Things didn't work out that way, so they shipped him out for a great first base prospect and a very good pitching prospect. What's wrong with that? That's how you build a fucking team. If you aren't going to win NOW, you ship out the high money players and bring in young talent.
We have to bring in another power bat - taking a pretty hard look at Jermaine Dye. I've also heard that we're trying to trade for Jose Guillen or David DeJesus. If the Padres don't come away with some more offense after the trade deadline, I'll be a little upset. It'll just be disappointing if we acquire more pitching and no bats. Adrian Gonzalez won't be traded (yet) ...wish I could say the same for Heath Bell.
I guarantee you that's not true. Every year the small market teams whine about the Yankees spending, but then when it comes time to negotiate the CBA nobody even proposes a Salary Cap. Because a salary cap would necessarily come with a salary floor, which the thrifty teams don't want. David Glass, the owner of the Royals and CEO of Wal-Mart, is one of the richest men in America. If he wanted to spend more, he could easily afford to. Instead he accepts more in revenue sharing than he spends on his payroll, and pockets the difference. Which is perfectly fine by me (this is America, he can do whatever the hell he wants with his money) but it takes away his right to bitch and he knows it. The Marlins, despite having pretty much no fans, are the second most profitable team in baseball behind the Red Sox. Because they happily accept revenue sharing and don't reinvest it into the team. With a cap replacing the luxury tax, they'd lose a huge chunk of that revenue and they'd have to raise payroll to the salary floor which would decimate their bottom line. As far as I can tell, the Brewers are the only team in baseball who have actually made a serious effort to get a salary cap implemented.
Baseball needs a cap and floor. The cheap teams apperently don't understand if you invest and build a winner, your merch and ticket money will be GREATER than your revenue sharing checks. Fucking douchebags.
I agree. the marlins have gutted up two world series championship teams, why? because they have no money.
Imagine how much money could be made if they had just spent some money and kept their players? Titles and sellouts. Lots of money.
This isn't true. They won titles and made no money. That's why they had to gut the teams. There is no fan base down there.
Why would they take the risk of investing in the team and having it fail, when they can make a killing running the team like Rachel Phelps in Major League? http://bizofbaseball.com/index.php?...hise-valuations&catid=26:editorials&Itemid=39
Oh well, looks like i was wrong. It's happened. Still, a cap and floor need to be added. Competitive balance and whathaveyou. This article is grand Basically, the Mariners used us and we couldn't buy our way back to the top. Boohoo! You'll just throw even more money at him in the post season now.
Seattle got what they wanted in the short term, but the Yankees aren't a good enemy to have. You can bet that Brian Cashman is going to make it very expensive for them to resign Smoak when the time comes, for example. Assuming that Jack Z. has that long of a shelf life, of course. Yeah they do. But the problem runs way deeper than the Yankees overspending.
Smoak is what? 4 years away from FA, at best? If either GM is still around by then, it'd be very surprising.
that's not true. in '97 they spent money, won a world series, and still didn't draw enough to warrant keeping the team. some markets simply can't sustain a high payroll. look at Tampa Bay, they draw dick. titles do not equal sellouts in all markets. just a fact. selling out the playoffs doesn't pay for a team, you have to draw for 81 games as well.
