In Rex's 2009 scheme, he did the opposite of the common belief that you are endorsing. He is playing one on one with Revis to take the opponents best WR out of the play. This opens a spot for a blitzer since they are not relying on the safety for help. Now with Cromartie playing man to man on the other side, man, Rex won't have to worry as much about the second WR as well. Opens up more possibilities. Add Jason Taylor at LB/end in passing situations with Pace on the other side, all you need is for the inside DL to take up blockers and space to let the others disrupt the QB. The secondary is very good and will be able to fend off the offense. The opposite of the Giants if you think about it.
If Jets had any intention to go for 4-3 as their base, they surely would have inquired about Haynesworth. Jenkins-Haynesworth combo of interior would be defense all by itself. Gholston can then go back to his natural 4-3 DE spot as well, and Ellis can be RDE on the strongside. Makes a lot of sense, no? Except, Jets are NOT headed this way.
Pouha has been improving each year. I this this guy and hope he does have a break out season. Hey, if the Big Kat thinks it will happen so be it, that is a guy you can trust. A life time Jet who kicks ass.
With all this talk about switching it up on downs with the 4-3, I think bringing in Jason Taylor and moving Gholston to defensive end will improve the 4-3 look much better than last year. I would put at Ellis at LDE, Pouha DT, Jenkins NT, and Gholston/Taylor at the RDE. Seems like a good bunch. This is not the biggest strength of the Jets, but I would think this is the best "lineup" if you will for a standard play. Additionally, you could put Gholston and Taylor at both ends on obvious passing downs. If they play it well, I could see quarterbacks fearing this one a little bit.
You are putting Gholston on the field and removing Calvin Pace, the guy who led the team in sacks. I want Pace and Taylor chasing QB's together.
So you don't think he would get double teamed on a four man line? Really? Sorry, you are not making sense here.
The best way to keep big Jenks healthy and fresh is to rotate him, so he's only seeing the field 60% of the time. Not changing our base D from a system that was best in the league. The more that Pouha develops the more we will be able to do this.
Pretty much. I'm a big fan of Mike DeVito as of late, he's going to get plenty of PT with this defense, he's effective at stopping the run, and the guy loves to play, him and Pouha are going help this defensive line out so much more, a clean bill of health is all we need
DeVito will be the other starting DE alongside Ellis. Pouha will be the #1 reserve as he can come in and not only spell Jenkins at NT but can also spell Ellis/DeVito at DE. I'm excited to watch him develop even further along in 2010. He's 31, but he's a young 31 as 2010 will only be his 6th NFL season and he won't be 32 until February 3rd. Pouha could have another 6, 7 years in him, easily.
Pouha did get some props last year, but I don't think nearly enough. We were all terrified when Big Jenks was a gone, his impact was huge without Jenks in the lineup. Having them both healthy and knowing this defense will work wonders.
This is the reason for not drafting a DE in the draft, next year we will have to address the position, but for this season i'm liking our rotation, and God if Vernon actually produces and helps this team out then were stacked top to bottom, makes you wonder how much PT the Ghost will actually get, and is it official that DeVito will be starting on the other side of Ellis? Or will the Ghost get that spot, Hard Knocks should give us a good idea of that, i'm looking forward to seeing that story line develop, TC is going to be crucial for our near bust prospect
You could really see his impact last year when Jenks went down. We didn't miss much in the middle with Pouha and Mike DeVito
I think Rodrique Wright will get more playing time than Vernon, but that may be just me. I don't see how Vernon can play effectively as a 34 DE. When we're in the 43, eh, maybe...
Well, don't get hung up on the 3-4 Tag... It's only a name... In reality, what Rex likes to do is come out in any defensive alignement... I think the tag 3-4 is just so other people are happy with a nice simple label... if you ask Rex he'll tell you he runs a multiple front defensive alignment depending on the situation.
