Good to know Pouha is ready... Big Jenks won't play more than 60% of the downs and we need someone to step it up at NT. He already played well last year... go Pouha!
Pouha and DeVito are the reasons we didn't draft a defensive lineman this year. Lots of people are scared away by Pouha's age, but the guy hasn't even peaked yet, let alone started to decline. DeVito is my breakout player for 2010; regardless of whether Douglas comes back (I'm nearly certain he will) Mike DeVito is going to start.
If jets want to have the best run defense, pressure on QB oriented defense they ever had they should go to 4 down lineman defensive line, Jenkins at left tackle, Pouha at right tackle, Ellis and Devito at ends. Nobody can block Jenkins one on one. Jenking and Pouha would wreak havic in the middle, breaking up runs before they get started and terrorizing quarterbacks. A 4 man line would also allow Ellis to do alot more at end. Defensive lineman arent supposed to occupy offensive lineman so corners and safetys can blitz,Defensive lineman make tackles, intimidate people and pound runningbacks and quarterbacks, thats their job !
I love Rex, but i dont love the 3-4, Defensive lineman are your biggest strongest guys on the defense, you dont use them to occupy blockers, you use them to dominate and intimidate offenses, The gianst proved that when 3 years ago their defensive front 4 took them to the superbowl and beat the undefeated Patsies, The giants defensive front 4 was why they got to superbowl and won it. It was simple old school football. EVERYTHING on offense starts with line, EVERTHING on defense starts with line, its that simple.
I think I'll defer to Rex on how to best utilize the personnel on defense. I read that the Jets used more 4 man fronts than 3 last year anyway, especially after Jenkins went down. I would expect to see a lot of 3 man fronts this year with both Pouha and Jenkins in there, with one at end. That's a lot of beef up front.
5 of the top 10 run defenses (including the Jets) were 3-4 defenses in '09. 3-4 defenses have been in and won a number of the last 10 superbowls. The Jets don't really have the personnel to run a standard 4-3 defense as there base D. You have to have at least one really good pass rushing DE to run a standard 4-3 as your base defense.

Run a 4 man down defensive line, Jenkins at left tackle, I bet you he makes 12 solo tackles a game and gets at least 2 sacks a game, Jenkins in a 4 man defensive line is like letting king kong run wild, and Pouha aint no slouch either and imagine what Ellis would do once eveyrones worrying about jenkins ? that is scary .

In a 4 man defensive line Jenking could be the greatest defensive tackle in NFL history, nobody can block that man 1 on 1.
Jenkins played in a 4-3 for 7 years prior to coming to the Jets. He averaged 3 Sacks a year, and never approached the 2 sacks/game you seem to think he'd have.
* I dont understand u,? you said you thought Jenkins would be awesome on a 4 man defensive line, now you post this , what do you think of Jenkins playing on a 4 man line, how do you think he would do ?
^ My first post was a joke. He was a very good 4-3 DT, but he's probably a better 3-4 NT IMO. He would never come close to 2 sacks a game in either role though. Rex mixes up the fronts and does a lot of unconventional things. I don't think pigeon holing the Jets defense into a specific front is something he'd ever do.
Heres another reason I love Jenkins on a 4 man defensive front, hes prone to injuries, has been his whole career, the man carries alot of weight, hes also prone to getting tired. In the 3-4 at nose tackle he gets block by 2 sometimes 3 guys every play, nobody on the field gets hit by more big offensive lineman than the noseguard, you put him in a 4-3 and you take some of that pressure off him, the noseguard in a 3-4 is the hardest working defensive player on the field.
I thought Pouha played really well for us last season. He's great insurance for Jenkins and should see a good amount of time at DE as well.
i'm sure we will see 4 man lines sometimes during the year but it can't be our base package. way too much talent at linebacker to have one of those guys on the bench all the time.
Love Sione Pouha. I'm waiting on my Adopt-a-Jet, but for now, the avatar will have to do. Might be my next jersey.
