Those are the only games that Revis has appeared in against Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. You said specifically that Revis was worth whatever he could get because the Jets faced Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. Guess what, they suck against Brady and Manning with Revis in the lineup. That's just what it is.

No, this is exactly why Revis contributions are negligible. Everything but the man he is covering is out of his control and in those games that obviously means that he doesn't help the Jets win because they don't. Does he help them lose less badly? Who cares.

Darrelle Revis wants to be paid like Peyton Manning and substantially more than Tom Brady. Last time I looked charity was not the purpose of NFL salaries and if the Jets pay Revis like Manning and Brady they're just giving to charity because Revis play has not earned the salary in question.

Take Revis out of those games and see where the Jets finish. One more good CB next to Revis and the Jets have those games won.

I know he can only cover one receiver at a time; that's why there are more than one on the field. But saying that taking Randy Moss and Reggie Wayne out of the game is negligible is ridiculous. It's a team sport. By this logic, Brick and Mangold's contributions were negligible. Sanchez's improvement and performance in the Colts game was negligible since the Jets didn't win.

You're looking at this from all the wrong angles. No one is going to be determining what Revis' worth is based on the Jets' W/L column but on how he did against the best QBs and WRs he played against. He took the biggest weapons away from two HOF QBs. That's the point that people are going to be looking at, especially Tannenbaum.

Shutting down the entire side of the field is never negligible. It's exactly what Rex wanted to see happen. His contribution to the defense was above and beyond what anyone could have expected. Ask Brady or Manning what it's like to play against Revis and how much they look forward to it. He, more than anyone else, makes this defense feared.

He's the best CB in the league. Fuck, he's the best player on the team. Name someone who is better. Replacing his production would be the most difficult task for the FO on this team.

Paying him his market value isn't charity. Did you completely forget that this is a negotiation, not a final price? You don't even know the terms of this deal. As for his value to the team, he's the most important person on this defense, which, for the next two seasons, is going to be the most important unit on this team.

He will get it. Jets would miss him no matter how many Holmes, Cromarties and LT's they have. No wonder Woody has his PSL hounds up my ass for more money.

If his "market value" is in the same range as a franchise QB then the Jets need to let him go and get some real value in return. Because no CB is worth what franchise QB's get paid. In fact no other position is worth what franchise QB's get paid. Very few positions are worth half what franchise QB's get paid and CB is not one of them.

He is 24, and our defense runs around him. How about having a god damn great defense for 5 more years? I'm sure he can stay at his play last year for atleast 4-5more years.

Him locking down a #1 WR for 5 years is worth 100million to me. Boat load, and guarantee money the shit out of his 2011 contract

Demarcus Ware is getting $11.28 mil per year for 7 years, with $40 mil guaranteed. He has as much if not more impact on the game than Revis could possibly have. If he gets $12 mil or more per year, then he is getting his fair value. End of story.

In Wade Phillip's defense? Yes. In Rex Ryan's defense? Fuck and no.

Revis is the most important person on Rex's defense. Rex's defense relies on the coverage to the front seven help create pressure on the QB. The LBs and DL in Rex's system can be pretty much anybody. The #1 CB has to be Revis.

Which is why Rex Ryan has never had a dominant defense except last season with the Jets?

    Really?

I think it has a lot more to do with Ryan building this defense around the team's greatest strength.

    This.

    You're being really short-sighted here.

His system with the Jets is different from his system with the Ravens. He doesn't have Terrell Suggs and Ray Lewis here like he did in Baltimore. He doesn't have Ozzie Newsome making the picks that another HC wanted like he did in Baltimore. He's crafting the defense in his own style with the players that he wants.

That's why he's focusing on the secondary with the Jets. That's why we just traded for Antonio Cromatrtie and drafted Kyle Wilson a year after trading for Lito Sheppard and signing Donald Strickland.

When he was in Baltimore he was working with players that other people decided to break in, people who valued the front seven over the back four. He's a defensive genius so of course he made it work in Baltimore but he loves using the secondary to create sacks. It's well known that Ryan loves CBs. Newsome's exact comment to Tannenbaum after the Jets hired Ryan was that he was sending him to New York "with a sign around his neck that says, 'I need corners.'"
    Which is more likely?

-That while he was in Baltimore and not making personnel decisions he tailored his defense to fit the future HOF players he had while lobbying to get the ones he wanted. So now that he is the head coach and calling all of the shots he's free to implement the defense that he always wanted to and draft the players that fit his scheme?

    Or:

-That he had the defense that he always wanted when he was only a coordinator and now that he is a head coach he has to settle and change his original scheme while continuing to draft to fit his altered scheme when he had every opportunity to bring in more pass rushers and DLine for the front seven that is supposed to be more important to him?

We've been targeting corners left and right in the past two offseasons while the last pass rusher we brought in was Gholston. Doesn't that seem like a big clue as to how Rex's mind operates?

Terell Suggs anyone? thats what hed do with Ware.

we all love Revis and Rex loves CB's but hes had kick ass defenses with people a fraction of Revis talents.

with LB'ers like Scott, Lewis, and Suggs. with DL like Gregg and Ngata

i'm with you on the fact hes important based on Rex's preference of locking down the DB to improve the rush.

but simply put Demarcus Ware has the same impact on almost any defense. hes just that good of a pass rusher.

the whole point I think of what people are getting at is Ware is just as good of a defensive presence as Revis.

the fact Revis wants a shit ton more than who I think is easily one of the best pass rushers in the league today, it makes you a little irritated. no matter how hard Rex Ryan jerks off to footage of CB's.

Revis is worth 13.5 Mil a yr with some nice guaranteed. thats my opinion. the Aso talk is him playing hardball with Tanny but if thats really his sticking point months from now and hes not locked up, he really can eat a dick. GeigerDick

The defense runs around him because Rex saw him as the best defensive player on the field and designed the scheme to run around him.

Rex is not stubborn like Mangini. He does not get players and try to force them into his predetermined system. He designs it based on the players he has. If Revis goes, you better believe he will morph the system to take advantage of the skills of the players he has.

Is Revis a great player, and possibly the best defensive player in the NFL? Undoubtedly. But is he absolutely CRITICAL to having a top-flight defense? Most likely not, and if the two sides cannot come to a reasonable agreement, then the Jets will have to cut bait.

I don't think it's so much about tailoring his defense to Revis as it is tailoring his defense to the changing league rules. Rex did an amazing job funneling passes to Revis last season, but if that was just tailoring to existing personnel, then Rex had the chance to build up front for 2010 and instead opted to build the secondary. Revis was step 1 in adapting his defense for this decade.

  15. This is spot on. I believe that 16M a year is too much for any corner. However I do feel like Revis deserves in the 12.5-13M a year range. Why? B/c the position and league have both changed. The league has become almost completely fueled by elite passing attacks...and the rules in place make it almost impossible to consistently succeed at CB. Revis has been flat out DOMINANT despite these facts.

Shutting down one half of the field 10 years ago wasn't as valuable as it is in today's game.Even 5 years ago Bradwaysux argument would have more merit. But present day, If you can come close to completely erasing a guy like Moss,Marshall,Johnson or Wayne from a gameplan...you have a very good chance of winning the football game. There is no other corner in today's game that has that kind of ability.

The key to football today is to beat the opposing QB. Doesn't matter how you do it. Just stop him. Revis allows the Jets to beat the opposing QB in multiple ways. He takes away the QB's # 1 option and also allows the rest of the defense to disrupt/ beat down the QB w/ unique aggressive blitz packages..under the assumption that he is taking away one side of the field.

Additionally he's 24 years old, and plays a position that doesn't demand physical contact on every single play. That means potentially a longer shelf life. What does that mean? Revis' party can make a damn good argument to the Jets basically eliminating the Ware argument b/c Ware plays a position that is a much larger risk for injury and a much shorter shelf life. Ware has physical contact w/ 300+ LBers virtually every single play. Revis likely has physical contact about 40% of the time, mostly against guys around his own size.

I believe the Assomugha argument needs to be thrown out the window b/c it doesn't fall into a fair and reasonable category, and in a year or so that contract will no longer exist But I also think the Jets will need to offer a contract w/ a little more long term stability than the Ware contract. Assuming Revis continues to perform at this level and there aren't any long term degenerative injury concerns...he is essential to our long term success.

Yes, Rex has had some great Ds with Baltimore, but that team is loaded with defensive players all over the place. Multiple all pros on the DL, LB and secondary positions. With the Jets, how many pro bowler, let alone all pros did we have on our D besides Revis?

Rex' D is based on CBs and their man to man skills. Revis the best man to man corner one can find. If it was anyone else besides Revis, then the whole D falls apart here in NY. Imagine putting Moss on a 'Lowery Island' and then sending 7 blitzers...not gonna happen. With Revis, Rex gets an extra blitzer. So what is his value? IMO, its about atleast the 2nd highest paid CB PLUS the extra blitzer he lets free (Aso's contract should not a matching tool).

If you think Manning is about a $15mil a yr QB, then that's not gonna happen. Both Manning and Brady want to sign new deals and rumors are, they will be asking or getting around $20 mil a year (Manning could get a 5 year $100 mil deal with about $40mil guaranteed).

Although I disagree with the $15 mil demand for Revis this year, in 5 years time, $15mil for the best defender in the game would be a bargain. I don't know what the highest paid defender got in 2005, but Im pretty sure it wasn't $15mil a year. Five years ago, Michael Vick signed a 10 year $130 mil extension that made him the richest player in the NFL at the time. Right now, $13 mil a year will probably put u barely in the top 10 highest paid players. Salaries are going up every year and thats why the cap keeps going up accordingly. Records a meant to be broken. Aso's record contract will be broken. If Revis breaks is, someone else will eventually break Revis' record in the future.

Jets are trying to sign Revis for 9 years. I doubt he gets to see year 8 and 9 at age 33 and 34 unless the base salaries are less than $10mils each. Regardless, Revis' $15 mil demand is not close to the contract Manning and/or Brady will get.

Even if it is $100 million spread out over 8 years the deal still needs to have some sort of guaranteed coin at least $30 or $40 million.

If I'm Revis I wouldn't sign the thing if it had $200 million in it until it has a fair amount of guaranteed coin in it. Contracts in today's NFL are more about the guaranteed money than it is what the total contract is worth, which is why I believe if we give him enough of the contract guaranteed then it won't care as much about making $16.2 million a year.

If you're Revis you're probably going to take an 8 year, $100 million deal with $40 million guaranteed over an 8 year, $130 million deal with little to no money guaranteed.

    Allow me to reiterate:

Rex has had two drafts as the HC of the Jets. He hasn't drafted one player to for the front seven. The last front seven player the Jets drafted was Vernon Gholston. Everyone since has either been a veteran signing, someone looking to rebuild their career, or UDFAs.

Right, so wouldn't that be an argument for paying Revis less than Ware per season due to Ware's shorter shelf life and higher wear and tear? By this logic, the contract should be longer, but it in no way justifies paying him more money per season.
