With the constant disputes over Revis' contract over the past month which more then likely may stir up controversy with other players expirings contracts such as Mangold, D'Brick, and Harris over the next months or next season how will this work financially for the Jets? If you were the GM for the Jets what investment would you make into each player? Would drop one, two, three, or even four? Trade some? Sign them all to massive deals? What would you do? Im talking numbers here people so lets see em in your honest opinion on each player in the "Big 4". This is how it'd work for me: Sign: Darelle Revis- 6yrs- 85.2 Million ( 14.2 Mil a year) containing incentives if he Wins DPOY, MVP, Playoff MVP, or Superbowl MVP and a no trade clause until the final season. Sign: Nick Mangold- 8 yr 77 Million Contract ( 9.625 Mil a year) Deserves to be PAID and this would be a solid contract for Mangold to make him one of the highest paid Lineman in the NFL. The deal locks him up for 8 years until he's 34 making him a career Jet. No incentives here but trade clauses could also come in works. Sign: D'Brickashaw Ferguson - 7yrs- 65.1 Mil ( 9.3 Mil a year) Also deserves to be PAID D'Brick is a Top 5 LT which means he gets Top 5 money that also covers his high ceiling of being the best LT in the league. Also would make him a Jet till he's 33. Sign: David Harris- 5 yr 32 Mil ( 6.4 Mil a year) He's becoming a premiere MLB and in Rex's 3-4 D is becoming dominant but a little lowball contract would be good for the Jets and with some health concerns it gives the Jets a safety blanket if he wants anything over 7 Mil a year i say trade him for picks and save some money. (I love DHarris but we dont have much money to throw around after huge contracts) These contract guesses are completely based on other contracts around the NFL and where I feel the certain Jet player belongs. I could be completely going over the top or lowballing each contract there just my opinions but I'd love to see what each poster has to say. If you need contract info I used this as one of my many sources- http://content.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/salaries/playersbyposition.aspx?pos=150
Great work. Not sure if it makes cap sense to have all that money tied in to 4 players...but you did some great homework there. It does seem that you are pretty dead on concerning the players worth compared to other players around the league. Thats the only thing I checked. Nice job!
If the center is regarded as the best in the league...and the LT is regarded as lets say a top 5 but not best in the league..that would make sense to me...I think.
It doesn't, that is higher than the current top salary for a center by a large amount and that contract is about on par with the Aso contract IMO.
I think Mike T needs to give Revis a contract that will give him $12M per year that includes incentives to get him to $15M per year. The incentives should include things like JTJ mentioned but also things like offseason activities, mentoring, etc.
Thanks man always nice to be appriciated when you write something that takes you about 45 mins hahaa. But yeah i compared alota contracts over and over and decided on those numbers. Also thank for clearing up the LT and Center Contracts, I was just about to post that yes the Best center in the league deserve more then a Top 5 LT in any situation.
Hey guys just as a reminder if you disagree on my contract numbers or who I kept feel free too weigh in with your own numbers please. ( The biggest point in this thread)
In order of salary per season: 1) Revis 2) Mangold 3) Brick 4) Harris Now, these guys are going to command massive dollars and we don't even know what the new salary cap will be (or if it will return). I see us losing one of them..........
All those numbers look pretty good to me, although I doubt Harris takes that deal. I wouldn't mind offering him a little more to put him around 7 mil per year but I agree that of the big 4 he is the most expendable. Seeing these numbers makes me realize that it looks like only one player out of Cromartie, Edwards and Holmes will likely be with the team for the long term as well.
Here's how the big 4's contracts should look right now: David Harris - renegotiated to reflect the fact that he has outplayed his rookie contract by a mile. Nick Mangold - extended to keep him on the Jets through the uncertainty of the looming lockout and labor difficulties. D'Brickashaw Ferguson - don't touch this year. Extend next year after the lockout. Darrelle Revis - move a little money around so he's not playing for a million this year. Revisit for an extension in 2012. Move the money from 2012 to 2010 since the 2012 year is going to be capped (likely) and to give some incentive for both sides to come to the bargaining table early in Revis walk year. Right now he's getting 1 million this year and 15 million in 2012, split the difference and make it 8 million each year.
I love the idea of splitting the difference for those 2 yrs but I dont see Revis taking that since a possible lockout is looming and he wants his guaranteed money NOW. Which is very unfortunate for us.
Great post Johnny I was curious at to what Tannenbaum was up against and you aimed some light on it. I would bump up Harris because I believe Patrick Willis signed for 50 million and Harris every bit as good. I would lower Mangold's with less years. Maybe 5 years 50 million. The Jets will have to also sign either Holmes, Edwards or Cromartie. Its gonna be tough.
Revis - 7 years, 91 million (13m a year) Brick - 6 years, 57 million (9.5m a year) Mangold - 7 years, 57.4 million (8.2m a year) Harris - 5 years, 38.5 million (7.7m a year) Revis is under contract for 7m a year over the next 3 years, so paying him anything over 13m a year is too much IMO. The Jets FO hold too many cards in this negotiation (SB caliber team, great defensive coach, new stadium/training facility, NY spotlight, CBA uncertainty)... I think this is a fair deal for all parties and locks up the best corner in the league for the prime of his career. Brick deserves to be paid as one of the top LTs in the league. I definitely think we need to wait until next offseason to work on Bricks contract, and I'm sure he'll be fine with that considering the bargaining power he'll hold with a $10 million payday on the books for 2011. We may end up needing to pay him $10m+ a year if a new cap allows it. This might be a tough negotiation all around... a lot depends on his play this year. I hope they get to Mangold first personally... prove to the team and fans they're willing to take care of their players without having to give into Revis' current demands. This contract pays him .1m more than Evans (guard) got from the Saints this offseason.. I wouldn't go much higher than that. Willis signing a contract for 10m a year with all that bonus money makes it a little difficult to work out a fair deal for Harris, but this is around where I put his value at. Some might think 7.7m a year is high, but Harris is a hell of a worker and IMO the heart of our defense. I don't think he's as easily replaced as many others seem to. ---- This is a ton of $$ to pay 4 players, but hopefully there will be a new CBA that allows us to hold onto all these guys... it would be a shame to lose any of them. ---- Obviously we could beef up some of these contracts for the agents with funny money tacked on the end, but these are all good young players so ultimately you want all these guys to stick around for the length of their contracts. Bonus money as well as guarantees will also play a huge part in these contracts, but this at least pegs down where I put their per year value at. Interesting exercise, good thread Johnny!
^^ About 40 million a year for four players not including the QB- I just don't see that working out, check out all the other top teams in the NFL. You can't average any 4 players salary on that team to equal 10 million per year, even including the QB. Which this does not-
If you take the Eagles for example they have about 23 mil in cap space and have four players over 40 mil ( 40.763 Million) with some of there better players excluding there QB Kolb. ( 7.327 Mil) Using there Cap hits the players Jason Peters ( 15.890 Mil), Jeremy Maclin (9.123 Mil), Asante Samuel (9.995 Mil), and Trent Cole (5.775 Mil) So it can be done and still be able to move mutiple players into solid contracts.
For a simple arguments sake taking out the magical funny money of bonuses, back loading vs. front loading contracts etc.... Even with the Jets at under $100 mil per year salary (I think it was stated about $97mil), you are tacking on 40 mil more a year, bringing the total cap number to $140 million a yer average. There's no way those numbers will work. Even if you end up just under the cap, you're not leaving any room to bring on other FA's or sign your top draft picks. Its doesn't work. Someone is going to get low balled or you are going to lose one or two of those players. Or your going to have to rework other contracts or cut other players that might seem less important because of their role but may be a rock solid player in the system. EDIT: I'd really like to see Revis signed and Cro come on for a long term deal. I think having 3 solid corners in Rex's system would make this team a perennial playoff contender for a long time. I want to win the big dance but I also want this team contending in January every year.
you gotta take into account that something in the range of 15 million will come off the books next year plus whatever other magic Tanny works with restructuring deals and cutting other guys.
