But is not just a case of spending what you want? The NFL's salary cap is not a real cap as far as I know (and I may be wrong) because there are ways to circumvent the cap through bonuses and signing bonuses. It's how the Skins are able to do what they want. I'm not saying it's right, but I remember hearing Mike Felger, a local sports guy out here, grilling Jonathan Kraft about it and he got Kraft to admit it. That's why I think the Krafts are "cheap" for letting a lot of our players go. It sucks to have four players of their caliber up at once, but if the Jets really want all four they can have them, but it's going to cost Woody a lot of money to do it.
So far as I know any bonuses go against the cap and it's a hard cap. I've never heard of being able to circumvent it w/bonuses.
Sorry, you are correct. I meant to stress the signing bonus as the real way around it and it's deadly because that money is guaranteed.
thanks for the info! I guess there is something I need to get more info on and get back to you. The basic premise of the actual work around exists, and he got Kraft to admit it. Now, just cause it's possible doesn't mean you can or should do it for every player, but it's there if a team really wants to go that route. With the Jets so close to winning it all, I would imagine now is that time for you.
With the way they're raising ticket prices, trying to sell PSLs, and facing *potential* TV blackouts Jets fans are paying a huge price.
Sorry, but I don't agree at all with players wanting to renegotiate their contracts with years to go. When they signed contracts they knew how much they were getting. Many rookie contracts pay too much in the early years for the payback a team gets out of the player. How many players go to the team owners and say, I played badly, I want to renegotiate my pay down. None. Be a man, and live up to the agreement you made.
Woody isn't being cheap. He is being financially responsible. Throwing money around to everyone who wants it is not going to bring a Super Bowl Championship to NY, ask Washington. Tannenbaum will make sure this all works out.
I don't think Tanny is ready to give Revis $16 mil a year deal with shit loads of money. If that doesn't happen and Revis does not change his mind, I can see a 'Herschel Walker Esque trade'. A few first rounders mixed with a few mid rounders.
There's a post I agree with. Agents are just feeding greed and their entire profession is just leeching off others.
There was a good article up on the nyjetscap yesterday showing that we do extend players who deserve to be extended and get rid of those that don't, pretty much.
I remember an interview made a year or two ago where someone asked Revis: Why do you want to be the best in the NFL at your position? And his answer was (with no irony) "to make a lot of money". While I don't have a problem with whatever his motivations are (they clearly work) I remember thinking to myself "It will not be a fun time when we have to re-do his contract!" and I was right... I think Revis is a fun guy, a good professional and an excellent player... but on a scale from 1 to 10 on how attached to money he is he gets a 9... not that it's a bad thing or something to be ashamed, but it has to be taken into account in these negotiations.
