There is one thing I don't get in contract negotiations. Take Mangold and Revis, they are arguably the best C and the best CB in the NFL right now. However it isn't a logical assumption that for that reason they HAVE to be the highest paid C an CB in the league! Talent isn't the only thing that's evaluated in a contract negotiation (it about 90% imo)! Look at the highest paid C anc CB right now... they play for the RAMS and the RAIDERS!!! Those are two of the most dysfunctional teams in the NFL... Why did those players get paid so much? Because THE ONLY REASON to play in Oakland or St. Louis, if you're a good player, is money! On the other hand the Jets are a very good team (talent-wise) with a very nice locker-room (character-wise) and a very good CS & facilities... oh and also they are located in a very nice area (both to live and for marketing/visibility opportunities). It's only logical that on a team like that you get less money than in other teams where, I repeat, the ONLY motivation is money. I'm NOT SAYING they should sign cheaply... I think they have every right to be paid A LOT of money... but it's stupid to just say "I want to be the highest paid player at my position" without analyzing WHY the other guys at the same position are given so much money. If you only play for the money fine, go look for a team with NO AMBITION OR TALENT WHATSOEVER and they'll gladly pay you... but if you want to play for a SB contender accept the fact you won't get the same kind of money. Do you guys agree or is it just me? PS an example... let's say a logical price for a top CB is 10-12 mill $. I can see why the Raiders give 15 to a CB... finally they found a player with talent, might as well hold on to it. But that doesn't mean that now it nakes sense to pay a CB 15 mill! The sensibile price still is 10-12, an exception was made because the Raiders don't have other talented players and can afford to throw away moeny...
The reason is b/c crappy teams have to pay more to keep their homegrown talent from leaving for greener pastures. They're willing to overpay b/c if they let fan favorite's walk...that hurts the team's bottom line ala ticket sales.
I think I just heard my brother put a steak on the grill. To be serious for a second the NFL should have fucking caps on player contracts, and rookie contracts. Stupid fucks.
hahaha...right on, brutha. in regards to the OP....Revis actually is the BEST at his position and should be compensated as such. The real monkeywrench in all of this is Crazy Al's retarded view of player-worth (I hope Al chokes on whatever is left of Jamarcus' contract...just out of spite). If Aso doesn't get that contract.....all would be right in the world.
i agree with you, but at the same time we are not in there shoes. these guys play the most injury filled pro sport there is. no career gets cut short faster than an nfl career. one wrong hit in a weird spot and these guys are done. out of the league forever with some catastrophic injury. on top of that, the nfl does not have to guarantee the money like baseball and basketball do. those guys collect no matter what. the nfl contracts always have ways to escape. this is why they have to fight for every penny they can, especially the amount that is guaranteed. you think these guys wanna work after this? shit most of them cant even walk by the time they reach 50. thats why its holdouts are so much more prevalent in the nfl. you gotta fight for yours at all costs. and i know if i were them i would be looking for the big bucks too.
It's obviously about ego. To be the 'best' in the NFL also means to be paid the highest. Sports news updates announcing contract signings or extensions don't ever call a player undisputed best in the league at that position. But they do always manage to state, when applicable, that the player is the highest paid at that position in the NFL.
I agree... what I'm saying is, let's exaggerate this, If Aso gets 20 mill a year and the other top 5 CBs get around 10 mill a year is it fair to ask for 21 mill if you are better than Aso or is it just obvious that they gave him ridiculous money and no CB is worth that much? To me it's the latter. You can't base contract negotiations only on "I'm better than him, that means I should be paid more than him". My opinion is with the current salary system a CB, no matter how good he is, can't be paid more than 12-13 mill per season. Anything more than that isn't CB money but QB money. Of course in a world where NFL teams spend 300 mill a year (right now they spend 150) on salary the numbers change... but right now this is how it is. Buon appetito, Enjoy your pizza
Its no secret that Al Davis fucked it up for everybody with his retarded contracts. Even worse than Snyder used to do before he got burned on the Haynesworth deal. What's really a shame here is that I'm hearing alot of "I", "Me" and such but not alot of "team". Suddenly, everybody that got a tackle or caught a pass or made a block is a fckn superstar and wants more money except the real Core of the team. That would be the guys that were here before Ryan's Express hit town. Guys like JCotchery and Thomas and Jenkins aren't bitching because they realize you can't play winning football with 1 superstar and 10 other guys named Joe. Revis, Mangold and the rest really should stop reading their press clippings as it appears its going straight to their heads and the reality is, this team hasn't won shit yet. Maybe win a SB first, or at least appear in one, then cash in.. Seems like Ryan2.0 biggest adversary will be Ryan2.0...
Contracts are only about "I" and "me." You don't get paid more if you win a championship but rather are judged on personal statistics. The players under contract have a common goal as a team, to win. I have no problem with players attempting to sway things by not showing up for a practice or voicing their their displeasure about negotiations. It's all a game played to get the best deal in place. Let's all remember Leon Washington. He tried to play the game and lost. He overvalued himself right off the team with no long term deal in place.
I wish that were true. It just appears that suddenly, everybody that had a good year last season has suddenly become HOF caliber and deserves to be the highest paid player ever to put on a helmet. The media, and Ryan, are as much to blame for this as they have continously gassed up the Core 4 since last year's playoff run. I would imagine its only natural for these guys to start listening to the media and reading their own press clippings. I just pray that this team doesn't become a victim of its success..
Regardless of what Ryan says about the players they've proven they're among the best at their position. Everybody started noticing Revis after the first two weeks of the season when he dominated against Andre Johnson and Randy Moss (two of the most physically gifted WRs in the NFL). It is a fact that Revis is the best CB in the NFL, doesn't matter what anybody says the tape doesn't lie
That is hindering GM's all across the NFL. It's gotta be double tough to negotiate knowing that the rules may be different in a year or two.
That being the case, you'd think Revis and Co. would play for the longterm instead of being the highest paid in 2010 only to be the second or third highest in 2011 or 2012. What happens then? Do they hold out again and we go thru this bullshit one more time?
The fact of the matter is, a team should be prudent in spending if the league enforces each team with hard cap. No corner is worth 16M. Maybe a premium NT, or QB, Yes. Not a sideline player like a CB or WR. My message to Revis would be: you can be the highest paid corner if you want - but you won't be with the Jets. Go suck with the doormat teams like Detroit or Bills or Raiders. See how the shut-down corner thing works out for you there. Besides, locking up Cro and K-Dub will lessen the hit, even if Revis does leave.
