The '77 Falcons had a defensive formation that they called the sticky blitz. They would send nine pass rushers on the play. They were a 4-3 defense and when Glanville called for the sticky blitz the front seven and the two safeties would rush the passer. Rolland Lawrence was the '77 Atlanta version of Darrelle Revis. Lawrence was a consensus 1st team All-Pro at cornerback. By all accounts, he was simply brilliant that year. Lawrence also received All-Conference recognition after the 1975, 1978, and 1979 seasons.
Rex' scheme is the shit, im surprised we pulled off what we did considering the pieces we have. Thank Revis for allowing the insane packages, and Bart Scott for literally just lining up and smshing into OL. give Rex a couple more years to bring in some new toys and develop younger players, we wont see anybody suggesting a scheme tweak. besides his system is essentially that on steroids, and far harder to read as an OL
That's a good assessment I think. Back in '77 offenses were not as advanced as they are today. You didn't see bunch formations too often. Receivers didn't go in motion before the snap as often as they do today. Heck, the majority of WRs lined up in three point stances in the 1970s.
