Not at the NFL level....Offenses are constructed, primarily to defeat reaction and instinct. Why do you think the muddle huddle concept works so well.... Gholston has been playing for 7 years. In that time, he's been asked to learn 4 different positions. At the NFL level...a split second is the difference between sucking and performing. This will be his second year in One system, with an excellent coaching staff. Coming out of College, he was asked to change positions and learn EMs defense. Probably that's a little more than he was capable of. Now, he knows the D, and can just play his new position he should be ok.
Fair enough. The way I see it happening is that Gholston will be in on all obvious passing downs. He'll also get opportunities otherwise, probably with Bryan Thomas as the guy behind him on his side. He's not going to live up to his rookie contract. I've been saying that all along. At this point we need to see what he can do, not relative to his draft position, but in terms of whether he's worth bringing back at a reduced rate, or cutting the line and moving on. The mentally retarded and the clinicly insane.
I hear you. I'm critical of Gholston, but believe me when I say I want him to work out. I'd rather have a position filled with at least a serviceable DE/OLB than have nothing or go with a question mark into the season. But he needs to show he can be, at least, serviceable by the end of the Pre-Season.
We're looking good here Alio. Join me in my 6.5 sack projection, and we'll get these badmouthing queers on sig bets. 3 would be sacks, in 3 practices, against the best OL in the NFL.
I hate to rain on ur parade but these same kind of reports came out abt Gholston last year. In fact, he actually recorded a few sacks and rushed the QB a few times as well. This year they're being more quiet abt it, but it all sounds pretty much sounds eerily familiar.
OTA's w/no pads on. I'd say it's juuuuuuuust a little early to call yourself looking good (and I obviously hope you're right on that projection). Rex praised the shit out of him last preseason too.
Of course at the NFL level. At all levels of football. Why do you think defenses are so ahead of offenses at the beginning of every season? Because great athletes can react and make plays much easier(defense) than reading and having timing down(offense). Gholston has played 2 years of NFL football. This has nothing to do with what he did in pop warner, HS or college and everything to do with what he's done since he's been in the NFL. This isn't a career criticism of Gholston rather a criticism of him only during his time on this level. And then you're praising the guy for sacks in practices with no pads on? It's practically a different sport entirely when you have no pads on and guys aren't going full speed almost 4 months before the season begins. Not a credible basis for any type of praise or criticism this early on.
In Rex's press conference today he said Gholston split two guys and got a sack in practice today. Rex also said he's not going to say anything about Gholston this year because of what he said last year and he doesn't want to "cat" him. But then after he said that he couldn't help himself and said, "but Gholston is doing good."
I absolutely agree. If he hasn't shown anything coming out of camp, forget pre-season, he shouldn't be on the team anymore. I think he's going to be fine, but I'm not going to close my eyes and pretend square pegs in round holes fit. I would man, but I can't. There's no way Gholston gets 6 sacks. If he does, people here should have to eat his cleats. There's just no way his job will allow him to hit the QB that often. Wow, that's pretty scary (including the report in the post under yours.) If he can split blockers and get into the backfield, that's going to be pretty scary.
That's why I'm on his side. After looking back at some of last years games, he has the ability to get inside on a guy and shove him aside to the right with his left hand...In the Tenn. game I saw him do it several times. If he plays 16 games at DE, He'll get 6.5....
I feel like I'm getting excited for nothing. I love reading about POSITIVE reports on ghost, but in all honesty what else is Rex suppose to say. I am glad they are still working with him, even though this is likely his last year if he doesn't do anything. But I'm just gunna hold in my excitement until pre season comes along and we can see whether or not he's splitting linemen and getting sacks.
Cimini may report this as: "the OL misses Faneca so much, that even Gholston is getting sacks against them now"
