Just go back to last years AFCCG & you have the answer. Sorry that you & I do not see the same talent level in SE
Ah so if I understand U correctly U R saying our present LBer corps do not have the talent needed to be blitzing LBers
The problem is that you don't understand what his role is. It has nothing to do with a discrepancy in how we view his talent level. Also, don't forget that Ellis played a good portion of last season with a cast on his hand.
I would say Harris is good when he blitzes but the system is designed for Bart Scott to take on lead blockers and let Harris clean up the middle. as far as pass rushing, Pace is the only guy I would trust. for as big of a reach Bryan Thomas was hes grown into a good run stopper. avg off the edge. yeah I would say from a purely pass rushing standpoint the only guy we have is Pace and Taylor. I think Harris is good pushing the pocket from the middle but we send Scott to open up the lanes for Harris to patrol. we needed a CB simply because we have no idea if Cromartie is here after this year and that means you either wait on Lowery to keep developing or you draft someone better and have a good nickelback. we went with the latter. Taylor was rotational depth until we can get some younger bodies in here. the addition of Wilson will also give Rex the tools to keep coming up with the blitz packages that compensate for the lack of pure pass rushers we have.
Taylor is a great rotational guy to have with Thomas considering both of there strengths. That was a nice pickup, even though I can't stand the thought of him in green and white still
me either but his skillset is something our LB corps is sorely lacking, and yes I agree him rotating on Thomas side will be nice. he needs at least 1 good sack on Tom Brady and i think fans will warm up. we'll see. but yeah seeing that name and frame in green and white........bleh. oh well if he notches 6 to 8 sacks he'll have done his job. we'll see.
Look if it is not a run play then his role is to at the very, very least harry the passer. It really makes little difference since after this season he is gonzo anyway. As for JT well that tells U what they thought of #99 coming off the edge. We have to hope that JT gives us his all & has at least 1/2 to 3/4s of tank of gas left o/wise we are no further ahead then last years AFCCG
And he's outperformed one of the best 3-4 DE's in that category consistently over the past 4 years. No one ever claimed BT was good at rushing the passer.
Ah how many rings does Seymour have & how many rings does SE have after being in the league for soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many years?
How many seasons did Ellis play with Tom Brady and Bill Bellichick? And what does that have to do with our discussion? Larry Izzo has a bunch of rings, he must be the best LB ever. edit: FTR, I'm not trying to argue Ellis is a better player than Seymour. What I'm trying to tell you is that by your standard, Seymour is worse than Ellis. Seymour is the better 3-4 DE, yet he has fewer sacks by a good margin over the past 4 years. Ellis has been solid for us.
Actually, Bruce Smith, one of the most prolific pass rushers of all time, was a DE out of 3-4 alignment. Traditionally, 3-4 DLs were asked to hold two-gaps, but it has evolved into its own these days; you can find one-gap DL on 3-4 defense these days.
yeah, if the system asks them to shoot the gap rather than hold it. Ellis is asked to hold the gap. Everyone on the DL is asked to hold the gap when the Jets play a 3-4. Smith was an exception to the rule. He was that talented. Its no different than Warren Sapp having 12 sacks from the 3 tech position.
I love how Champs argument stems from one half of one game. The fact that he is wrong doesn't matter. I love the old posters and how they just don't let a point go no matter how wrong they are. Its hilarious.
When people use a statement like this to back up a point, they prove to everyone that they are wrong. Especially when talking about the DE position, my head hurts.
he was also suspended 1 game I believe.
I can completely understand the Jets not giving Ellis a contract extension. We have big contracts coming up and money needs to be allocated to youth. I would have no problem bringing Ellis back after his current deal expires for less money but if he is going to ask for more money than unfortunately we are going to have to cut ties. This is a 2 way street. If Ellis wants to remain a Jet and retire a Jet he will meet the team halfway. What I am not fond of is all the news I am seeing that the Jets have been shopping Ellis for a few months. I understand Tannenbaum is very active in improving the team constantly. I also think the chemistry issue has been blown way out of proportion. But lets be honest. If the Jets were to release or trade Ellis that would not send a good message to the rest of the team and IMO really would effect the locker room.
Well, not an exception actually. The 3-4 alignment in Dallas also features 1-gap DEs. No wonder - Wade Phillips is the son of Bum Phillips. In case of Bruce Smith, I would think that he could have wrecked havoc in the backfield as long as he is not asked to hold the gap and maintain the gap integrity. Buffalo just tweaked their scheme to allow Bruce to get upfield whenever he could - that means his two-gap responsibilities fell on the LBs behind him instead. There's no other way around it. I never knew Rex was a traditionalist when it came to his own version of 3-4; he wasn't when he was in B'more, if my memory serves me correctly. My understanding was that, his tweaked 3-4 had its root in 46 instead; this means you will find undertackles and one-gap shooting DEs we frequently see in 4-3 alignment - out of 3-4 front. P.S. My initial response was to the remark that 3-4 DEs cannot be a pass rushers. They can, as long as their scheme allows them to. (Their talent level would have to warrant such a tweaking in the first place, as in Bruce Smith case.) I am also very well aware of the fact that 3-4 DLs are usually asked to hold the gap, and I've been harping on for as long as I can remember for a stud DL pick.
