Some early projections on walterfootball.com. Is it me or does there seem to be more in 2011? Granted its early and everyone's a prospect, but I like this list. Da'Quan Bowers is my "as of May, 2010" pick. Marcell Dareus, Alabama Height: 6-3. Weight: 306. Projected 40 Time: 4.90. Projected Round (2011): Top 5 Pick. Cameron Heyward, Ohio State Height: 6-6. Yeah, probably was the underclassmen. Of the list, Dareus, Worthy, Wolfe, and Guy are all UCs, all juniors except Worthy, a RS Soph. Dareus and Heyward are animals, and good fits as 34 Ends. They are a little different in their games, Dareus has more potential because he has a freakishness to him. In my mind Dareus could play anything and be a star, he's a top five guy if he plays anywhere near his potential. Very strong, and one of the best athletes for a 300 pounder you're going to find. Heyward is a great talent too, but I don't think he'll ever be quite as dominant as Dareus. Heyward is about as close to a prototype End as you're going to find for a 34 defense. Does everything well, no flaws in his game. Guys on that list I really like, Jared Crick, who I think will end up in the top 15 once he shows he can hold his own without Suh, and Lawrence Marsh, who would have ended up as high a pick as his 2 linemates if he left early. Bailey has a ways to go developmentally, but could be a really good fit. Greg Romeus isn't a 34 end, and I have no idea why people keep saying he is. It's like Corey Wootton all over again, except more baffling.
My first thought when I saw the name. He has the size but not much else. His best asset is his first step and he has some great hand fighting techniques. His instincts are to disengage and penetrate, not tie up. I can see someone(me) trying to make a case for him as a 3-4 OLB, he has Everson Griffen's athleticism but also has his lack of experience. He would be a liability in coverage early on, even if he manages to pick it up eventually. As a 3-4 DE, he would be completely wasted.
Keep an eye on Southern Cal defensive lineman Armond Armstead. Armstead's 6'5 295 and he's extremely versatile. He can play anywhere on the line. This kid was also a very good basketball player in high school. Jurrell Casey is also another Trojan to watch for. He doesn't have the height you look for in a 3-4 defensive end (6'1), but he's strong as hell. The Trojans lost starting nose tackle Christian Tupou for the year and Casey will slide from DT to NT. Casey's a true junior with a lot of potential. As a sophomore, he was an all conference lineman. I think he'll thrive at NT. He's about 290 to 295 right now...he's expected to be over 300 pounds when the season starts. Monte Kiffin is in football heaven right now at USC. I expect their defense to be one of the best in the country.
That is a very frightening picture...Which I LOVE This really seems like a good year in total for D lineman, especially considering how many of these tackles have DE potential
Yeah if anything there are plenty of 3-4 DE's studs next draft..that's where we will probably pick one of them since Ellis could be gone next year
Ironhead Heyward's kid looks good, but out of the last 20 Ohio State front 7 players taken in the first round, how many became pro bowl players?
Are you kidding me, man? It's amazing to see what Vernon Gholston's done around here. The Pro Bowl is decided by the fans...and about 98% of the people that vote for the Pro Bowl are dumb as hell.
Last 20 years, Ohio State players, defensive front 7, first two rounds: James Laurinaitis- Likely a high level, Pro Bowl caliber player Vernon Gholston- Bust AJ Hawk- Not high level, but good NFL starter. Bobby Carpenter- So far bust, but buried on a depth chart. We'll see in St. Louis. Will Smith- High level player. Ryan Pickett- Consistent, above average starter. Andy Katzenmoyer- Bust Craig Powell- Bust Dan Wilkinson- Long term above average starter. Alonzo Spellman- good for a few years, average for most. For just DLs the look is even better, considering that it's only Gholston (bust), Smith (stud), Pickett (above average), Wilkinson (above average), and Spellman (average). I'd say for most teams, that's pretty good.
Gholston has brainwashed the uninformed. Every large school has their share of busts......OSU is no different than Florida, Penn State...on and on. In fact, try to name a school, other than OSU, that has produced better WRs. Cameron Heyward may never become an all-pro NFL player, but should develop into a very solid 3-4 DE that should have a long career. Heyward's work ethic and love of the game is second to none.
