He was probably the best blocking TE in the league for a few years. He just sucked a nut in the receiving game.
you don't draft blocking TE's only in the first round... but hey we had 4 first round picks, we had the ability to do whatever the hell we wanted and three of the 4 were cornerstones for us for half a decade.
I agree with that, Becht never lived up to his draft pick, but he was an insanely good blocker. I just hated watching him and Vinny play volleyball.
Not sure where you're getting $1 mil from, but base salaries are very misleading. They do not take in to account the signing bonuses (which you get paid when you signed the contract, but is figured in when the initial contract is signed). 5 years, $30mil deal at an avg. of $6mil a year. Thats the way I see it. It's least of my concern how much a player got when he signed the contract, cuz they get a big chunk of the contract up front.
Even if you include the prorated portion of his signing bonus, he's making about $1.5 million this season. That's where he's getting the $1 million from. The factual situation. Why would he say "he's making an average of $6 million this year" when his contract is structured with a low value this season and balloons last year and in 2012?
I don't even want to worry about this. Things I am most fearful of in my life: my daughter's safety. my wife's safety. my dog's safety. flying. terrorist attack on the train. psychopath gunman attack on the train. terrorist attack at my office building. and losing these players. the only way I can deal with any of these is just put my faith in the order of the universe that everything will be alright or else I wouldn't be able to function.
That's just how the contract is structured. If we had agreed to pay him, lets say, $3 mil this yr, the additional $2 mil weren't gonna add up to his 30 or 36 mil contract. It would have just moved the money around. Revis is getting $550k in base salary this yr. But in his first four years, Revis essentially will be making $22 millions. See the Rotoworld contract details. It states, Revis will make $16 mil in the first 4 years and another $6 mil in incentives ($6 mil in 4 years Im assuming). http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_contract.aspx?sport=NFL&id=4155 So yeah, that is $5.5 mil a year average in the first 4 years, and $20 total in the last two years making it a 6 year $42 mil contract. Not a small contract as it seems when people mention $550k base salary in 2010. That is why I said base salary figures are overrated. nyjetscap.com shows similar contract details: http://nyjetscap.com/darrellerevis.html Now Im not making a case that Revis is over paid. He deserves every penny of that contract to say the least.
I wasn't arguing with your statement about his average contract value. I was telling you where he got the $1 million THIS year from. You reacted like he was some idiot for throwing that number out there. It was accurate. He was only talking about THIS year, and you brought in the entirety of his contract. As far as restructuring, I can turn the question on you: "I'm not sure where you're getting this 2 million dollar raise from"? If we were to restructure Revis's contract to spread the money out and increase the length, we'd have a LOT more room to work with than that. His salary per CBA guidelines last season was $6.1 million thanks to a hefty roster bonus. He could receive a max base value of $7.9 million this season because of that bump in his final capped salary. If the team wanted to extend him before the going rate increases further for a top notch CB, they very easily could do so. That's WHY the contract is structured that way; it gives flexibility for dealing with the potential opt out last year. It was a genius contract all the way around. Also, your $42 million over 6 year estimate is inaccurate. The maximum he'll be receiving is $37 million after he's earned $17 million through 4 years and a max value of $20 million over the last two. If we were to restructure him this season at or below $7.9 million, then increase from there, we could MORE than cover the amount he'll be receiving in the next two seasons AND extend his contract. Just as an example: Say we bumped him to $6 million this season, then gave him the max bump each year: 2010: $6 million 2011: $7.8 million 2012: $8.6 million 2013 - 2015 are added on to the life of his contract. Instead of making $21.5 million in new money over the next 3 years, he'd pull $22.4 million. Add in a new signing bonus and he's making even more. We get him extended through 2015, we drop our cap number in 2012 when we'll have other contracts to deal with, and we don't see a huge bump in his 2011 salary. I'm not saying it's going to happen, but don't dismiss the possibility.
^I didn't mention an extension and neither was I trying to be jerk to the poster. I just said I wasn't sure where he got that figure from. His base is $550k this year plus about another $100k in work out bonus he'll likely receive. Again, those figures are overrated in any case as I already mentioned. The extra $2mil was just thrown out there by me to show my point that base salaries are overrated. About the 6 year $42 mil deal thing, maybe you are right. Rotoworld has him down for 6 years $30 mil with another $6 mil in incentives while nyjetscap.com has him down for 6 years $36 mil (most likely including the incentives). In that case, Revis would end up with $16 mil in first four years and $20 in the last two years. At the end of his contract, he becomes an unrestricted Free Agent. We don't ever want that to happen. Teams will line up and by that time in three years, someone WILL offer a 5-6 year $100 mil contract for a CB who'd be ONLY 27 years old during FA. Im not worried about him though. Tanny can lock him up for an additional 5 years without much of a hassle. The restructure you mentioned seems very very reasonable, except, I'd like to see us add 5-6 years instead of 3 years to his existing contract.
The difference between their numbers likely comes from predictions about his final buyback year. Rotoworld is going from the base $9 million, while Jetscap is going from the max $15 million. The actual value is indeed based on incentives, which are believed to have all, or nearly all, been reached. As far as the 5 year $100 million contract, no CB deserves that. Not even Revis. We'd be smart to spread out the next three seasons and lock him up, whether it's for 3 or 6 years, or anywhere in between.
CBs like Revis don't come every year. We see LBs and NT get 7 year $100 mil contract. A 6 year $100 mil contract 3 years from now won't be terrible for a player who might become the best defensive player by then by far. I can't believe the guy is still ONLY 24. If Revis becomes a UFA, a bidding war will start. I can think of 32 teams where Revis will be the #1 corner
7 year $100 million contract for a LB? No. The highest paid linebackers are Terrell Suggs and Patrick Willis. They each make about $10 million per. Ditto for a defensive tackle. I'm not sure if anyone has signed a higher contract than Tommie Harris at the position, but his was for $10 million per season. No LB or DT has ever even sniffed $100 million on a deal. You said 5 - 6 years, $100 million was possible for Revis. I'm saying there's no way he should be paid that.
Revis is not worth that much. Deion would not have been worth that much if he played today. For a guy who maybe has a shot at touching - not holding, but touching - the ball 8 times/game, I would cap it at $12mill/year for a sure-fire HOF CB and still have problems with it. Even a CB as great as Revis is not worth that much money. Teams that wisely invest heavier into the DLine and the LBs are typically going to be more effective than teams that spend more on their secondary. The secondary can help the pass rush to an extent but the best pass rush is always going to be more valuable than the best secondary, simply because giving the QB less time to throw the ball is going to make your secondary better than a secondary that can hold coverage for an extra couple of seconds will improve a pass rush. Coverage sacks are good but if you give a QB too much time - especially guys like Manning and Brady, guys that we will have to beat to reach the Super Bowl - some WR or TE is eventually going to shake free. If you don't even give a QB enough time to finish his drop back comfortably, your CBs are going to have a much easier time.
I just want to get some opinions on this: Say Cromartie has a great year (comparable to his 2007 season) and David Harris has a similar year as last season. If the Jets could only sign one of those guys to an extension- who would you prefer?
Before we drafted Wilson this may have at least been debatable, but now I don't think it's even a question. Harris is hands down the priority here IMO.
DeMarcus Ware signed a 7 yeare $79 mil contract last year. Albert Haynesworth signed a 7 year $100 mil contract. Nnamdi signed 3 year $45 mil contract. Was he overpaid? I would guess so, but that is not the question. And Im not discussing Revis' worth. Im just stating teams WILL overpay for such a young player. Maybe 6 years $100 mil would be an exaggeration. But I wouldn't be surprised at a 6 year $90 mil contract in 2013. As the years keep dropping by, contracts keep getting bigger and bigger.
