http://www.nfl.com/draft/story?id=09000d5d817d7ad5&template=with-video-with-comments&confirm=true Just one grade above the Bills? Yeah right! The Jets have earned kudos for their aggressive offseason moves, and the praise should continue after a solid draft. The Jets grabbed the top-rated corner on several boards with the selection of Kyle Wilson, and he will step right in as their nickel corner. In Vladimir Ducasse, the Jets get a young, physical interior blocker to develop for a big role along the line. With Leon Washington no longer in the mix, Joe McKnight becomes the team's third-down back if LaDainian Tomlinson is unable to provide a spark to the running back rotation. The Jets didn't have many picks to utilize, but their value and potential is immense, which makes this draft class worthy of solid marks. Key picks: Round 1 (29th overall): Kyle Wilson, CB, Boise State The Boise State standout was viewed as the top corner on some boards, and his skills make him an exceptional nickel corner. Additionally, he possesses the requisite grit and toughness that is demanded by the Jets' coaching staff. For a team that is loaded on defense, the landing of Wilson is a case of the rich getting richer. » Video: Jets select Wilson | Meet Wilson Round 2 (61st overall): Vlad Ducasse, OT, Massachusetts The Massachusetts star played offensive tackle as a collegian, but could move inside to guard for the Jets, who recently released veteran Alan Faneca. The team does have some options along a very good offensive line, so Ducasse could also sit on the sideline and learn the craft before playing a bigger role in a few years. » Video: Ducasse's combine workout | Meet Ducasse Round 4 (112th overall): Joe McKnight, RB, Southern California The scat back from Southern California has exceptional open-field ability, and his skills give the Jets another weapon to use in their running back rotation. His services will be in even higher demand now that the team traded Leon Washington to the Seahawks. » Video: McKnight's combine workout | Meet McKnight
IMO, the Dolphins should be getting an A, and certainly beat us and the Pats out. Grabbing Odrick, Misi and Jerry with their first three picks were fantastic. All look to be solid starters in the future and easily give their draft a B. Then, stealing Jones in the 5th bumps this up to an A. The Pats went quantity over quality. I suppose their hope is to hit on at least a couple of their 1,000,000 picks? For as many picks as they had, they left a crap ton of BPAs on the board. That alone deserves them a C+.
Every year the pats get praised and they haven't drafted well in about 5-6 years. This class may or may not turn out well but it is funny always seeing their drafts get praised.
for some unknown reason, the patriots constantly get massive love at the draft for no reason. They havent drafted well in years, they leave countless BPA's on the board, and constantly pass on guys who turn out to be late round gems. With 100 picks every year, they don't need to pass on the best players, and they should be able to find more late round gems than everybody else, but they just don't. They do not draft those guys for whatever reason. But because the pats keep trading backwards and accumulating picks for next year everyone can't love them enough. Personally I hope they keep trading down and down and down, because they have proven they can't draft for diddly with that philosophy. Can you even imagine how much damage the Jets (imo are an elite drafting team of late) could do with 10-15 picks every year? How many late round gems we could find, or even how many studs we could grab with 5 picks in the first two rounds? Either way its impossible to argue that we have gotten infinitely better return from our drafts the last 5 years than New England has.
It's not about who they draft, it's about how they draft. They are the smartest team in the league and it just seems like Belichick manipulates the draft board at times. What's their biggest weakness going to be in 2011? Probably receiver. They have two firsts and two seconds in a draft that could turn out to have one of the best receiving classes in a very long time. It's scary that the Gaytriots might never drop off until Belichick decides to retire. I know they haven't brought in a lot of highly productive players through the draft, but does that really matter if they keep kicking our asses? They still win, right?
If they are so smart and have been for years then why haven't their picks been panning out? Belichick looks smart b/c he got lucky w/ Tom Brady. if he didn't have Brayd he'd be a DC somewhere right now. After some really good drafts his first few years there his drafts the last 4-5 years have been awful. They keep kicking our asses? we are 2-2 against them the last 4 games and last I checked we were the team playin for the AFC Title while they were crushed at home in the WC rd. Also, he has had the luxury of having the best QB of this generation for all but 2 years there(coincidentally the genius missed the playoffs both years he didn't have and has missed 6 of 7 years w/o Brady as his QB).
Yea, the Patriots are sooo smart they pass on Clay Matthews and take Ron Brace. Don't get me wrong I love how they accumulate picks. Their problem is they don't make good selections. Maroney, Chad Jackson was like #34 overall, Ben Watson, Kevin O'Connell, Terrenece Wheatley, Shawn Crable, etc., etc. We would be in real trouble if they knew how to draft.
Some posters on here need to get off this obsession with the Patsies. The Pats haven't won a SB since the first part of the 2000's (2004 season). They are still a good franchise but not nearly the one that some on this board hold in such high esteem. Solid team yes. One of the league's premier powers, not anymore. They've slowly fallen off every year and last season's embarasing playoff debacle really shows how far they've fallen. Moss is on the downside of his career, Welker is out the entire season and their RB's are mostly old and done. If you want to hold Brady and Belichick in high regard that's one thing but the team as a whole is not much more than average right now.
The Patriots problem is that they think they're smarter than everyone else when they're drafting. They trade down because they think their guy at #50 is just as good as everyone else's at #25, and they make the move to get future picks that will be used the same way. Tannenbaum is the opposite, if he sees a guy he likes at #15, he's not going to accept the guy that's almost as good at #30. Doing that they end up with a ton of decent-role player types, but very little in terms of star power. Doing this is the reason their best players are for the most part from the 2005 draft or earlier, while the Jets best players are from 2006 and later.
I think the Bills draft is underrated. I know they didn't address their O-Line but maybe they didn't like the OL prospects this year. They certainly addressed their defense though and I bet we won't enjoy facing Spiller 2x a year.
Check out Mambo's draft thread in the NFL section. That is a pretty clear read on how well the Pats have used their stockpile of picks through the last four years.
Yeah, they keep kicking our asses. They won the division 7 times this decade. ...and didn't they win 11 games 2008 with Matt Cassel as their quarterback? It's pretty ridiculous that an 11-5 team didn't make the playoffs. Tom Brady is one of the best quarterbacks ever, but Belichick proved to everyone that he can still win without him. The Patriots are the best team in our division until someone takes them down. Hopefully this is the year the Jets take the East from them.
would you rather have won the div last year or made the title game? NE is still one of the better franchises in the NFL but they are not head and shoulders above us(and everyone else) like they used to be and a big reason is b/c they have drafted so poorly for so long. Belichick proved he can win w/o Brady? How so? By not making the playoffs in 2008 w/ that weak sched? Compare BB's record w/ and w/o Brady and let me know what you find. They won 10 games w/ Cassell as a starter, they beat just 3 teams w/ a winning record- the Jets, Miami and Arizona. The Jets missed the playoffs, Miami was thrashed in the WC rd and while Arizona made the SB they had it in cruise control in dec when NE beat them. That team was 16-0 w/ Brady the year before and won 10 w/ cassell as the starter. I agree the pats are still the favorites until dethroned but unlike years past other teams in our div have a shot.
Guys its Bucky Brooks. Check out his old mock drafts he is an idiot. Also happens to be one of the worst personalities on the show. I dont know why they let that man on TV.
IMO The Dolphins had one of the best drafts in the league Jared Odrick will be a great 3-4 De and I think was a great pick where they got him Koa MIsi possible next edge rusher for them Nolan Carroll- As many of you might know I go to Maryland and have seen this kid play. I would not be surprised him he ends up playing nickleback off the bat. Reshad JOnes- 5th round??? Can you say steal???
The title game, but the Patriots are still the better, more proven team. The AFC East has to go through New England. The Jets are definitely capable of winning the division, but until they do, it's still the Patriots' division. I really believe we've closed that gap. Rex Ryan and Mike Tannenbaum have really changed things for our franchise. The Pats are head and shoulders above just about every organization in spots. They still won 11 games without Tom Brady. He went down early in that Kansas City game, so I'll give Cassel and the rest of that team the credit for that win. It's not their fault they played a weak schedule. I hate the Patriots more than any team in the league, but I'm not going to bash them for beating teams that they are supposed to beat. Like I said junc...they went 11-5 and didn't make the playoffs. It's highly unlikely for teams to miss the playoffs with an 11 win season.
