http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=5143344 Kevin Mawae is still out of work and the president of the NFL Players Association revisited the idea Wednesday that it's more than his age holding him back. "I am unemployed and hoping someone will call," Mawae, 39, told "3 Hour Lunch" on 104.5 in Nashville. "It's kind of befuddling to me that I just came off my eighth Pro Bowl and a 16-game season and I can't get one phone call. “ Alan Faneca gets cut two days ago and yesterday he signs a contract with another team. And not to take anything away from him, we have the same agent, we're friends. But something tells me that there is something going on beside me just being 39 years old ” -- Kevin Mawae "Alan Faneca gets cut two days ago and yesterday he signs a contract with another team. And not to take anything away from him, we have the same agent, we're friends. But something tells me that there is something going on beside me just being 39 years old. "I've said in the past that I hope our management and the owners can look past the fact that I am president of the PA. But right now it's not looking that way. I'm looking for a job. I've made no secrets about wanting to be back here in Tennessee and I've yet to receive a call from anybody." After the Titans decided they would play both Eugene Amano and Leroy Harris at guard and center in a combination to be determined, coach Jeff Fisher indicated there would be a spot for Mawae as a backup if he wanted it. But it does not appear a concrete offer was ever made and as an unrestricted free agent,Mawae continues to wait out the market. Mawae said he's staying in shape, working out and planning for his camp for offensive linemen. He thought there might have been a chance with Denver, but said he watched the Broncos take two centers and a guard in the draft. "I look on the rosters and I know there are teams that are hurt and struggling on the offensive line and yet I still haven't got a call," he said. "Part of me wants to say, yeah, I think my position with the union is a problem for a lot of management people. But at the end of the day I would hope they'd be able to overlook that for making the team better . . . "It's a position that I chose and one that I accepted and I knew going into it that this could be the case. If that is, then so be it. Because ultimately my goal is to help the other players in the NFL make the right decision to do what's best for them, and if I lose my job because of that, then it is what it is and I can move forward knowing that I can do my best." Would it cost MUCH to bring him back?
I was actually thinking about him at guard today. I'm not really comfortable with such a raw guy in Vladimir stepping in to fill Faneca's shoes, at least right off the bat. I wouldn't mind seeing him at LG for a good price. Of course, that would completely defeat what Tanny claimed was the purpose of cutting Faneca. I also always have a little homer in me when it comes to recycled Jet players.
I highly doubt he would command a lot of money considering no one has even called him about a job yet. Do we really want Mawae back though? It's not like we need someone to mentor our young linemen. Brick and Mangold have learned from Faneca the past 2 seasons and they could easily mentor Ducasse so I don't see the point in bringing Mawae in. It just seems like we would be better off finding some younger, undrafted free agents to build up our O-line depth. They wouldn't cost as much and theres always the chance we find a diamond in the rough.
Why? Where would he fit? Why would he sign to play with the Jets? His signing makes no sense...........
It doesn't matter if he commands the veteran minimum. We don't have a single UFA exemption yet, and even when we get one, it's likely going to be someone with fewer years than Mawae signing for the vet minimum. There is no way we can sign him before July 22nd, and then he misses everything but TC.
I saw this on espn earlier, him bitching about how he isn't getting signed because he is the the president of the players association then comparing himself to Faneca. Maybe it's because you are older than Faneca and play center (1 player position) and not guard (2 player position)... Want this guy as a solid locker room presence? No way, he's a bitcher and a moaner and this article pretty much proves it. Further note: JoeyD and Allycat9>>>>>>>>>>>Jtrain in regards to trolling. There's a difference between trolling, and just disagreeing with everything a guy says
i think mawae is a great guy and in a vaccuum would be a good depth signing on the line but we dont need his lockerroom lawyering this year we have enough leaders so we dont need him ruining things
The only reason that I want to see Mawae stay in the league rather than retire this season is so the players can have him negotiating for the Union. I just don't want him on the Jets anymore unless it's for a one day contract.
Only if they sign him for 89 cents and he beats Jason Taylor to death with that club of his. Hahaha, remember other teams crying he was using that thing as a weapon? Good times.
It's a good thing we can't sign him anyway. He's been in the league more than 11 seasons. Our remaining FAs are Douglas, Izzo, Fowler, and Dearth. I don't see any of those guys signing for more than the vet minimum. The only guy on that list who has played more than 11 seasons is Izzo, and there's talk he may retire. So, we have to have another team sign Izzo just to have ANY chance to sign Mawae prior to July 22nd, and even then it's as a backup, which is EXACTLY the gig Tennessee is already offering him. This thread should be closed, cesspooled, whatever. It's useless.
