You can use Sabermetrics to make just about anyone look like Cy Young, if you make up enough new stats to track.
Only to people who don't know what they're supposed to be looking at. Looking at stats independent of context is silly. The purpose of any statistic is to be able to extract context-specific information. Saying a guy bats .300 has meaning to you only because you know that not many batters are able to do that. Seeing a guy bat .500 in 20 ABs doesn't blow you out of the water, because you're able to apply the context of limited ABs. The same rules apply to the more advanced statistics. They're more powerful in that they can give you a better idea of what's happening in certain aspects of the game... more specific slices to help you select the slice of information that is important to you. But they're also not always as straightforward, nor do they fit into the common knowledge of the game as easily.... so, at times, it's like giving a Lotus to a soccer mom. Way more car than she needs and not only will she not get everything out of it, she'll probably wrap it around a tree. You watch that happen enough, and you'll probably think that a Lotus is a "fucking stupid and rediculous [sic]" car. But it's not. It's just operator error, and a bad fit for the situation.
I'd be more likely to think you weren't kidding if he were throwing 92-94 still. But he's throwing 88-91.
Sabathia, followed closely by Pettite, who's been a little better than Santana. Pelfrey has actually only been slightly better than last year, but seems to be benefiting from the return of Jose Reyes. Essentially it's more k's, less walks, better defense behind him. Pettite is simply a freak of nature...these days anyway, we hope. He's probably having more fun than anyone in baseball at this point. -X-
