On one hand, I feel like it would have been better if the Jets waited for one of the younger guys to beat him out to cut Faneca. On the other hand, I've heard that Alan Faneca (the weakest link) was the leader of the offensive line. In that respect, I think it might be a good thing that we cut him sooner rather than later. Isn't Nick Mangold a captain? Isn't he our best offensive lineman? He should be the leader of that line. In a way I think this is similar to Antonio Pearce for the Giants last season. He was the leader of their defense and once he went down the Giants had no one ready to step in as the leader of that defense even though it wasn't difficult to replace his production. Same case here, Faneca (apparently) offers more as a leader than a player. We needed to replace him before his play completely fell off.
Santonio was a very unique situation, we got a 1st rd talent for a 5th rd pick b/c Pitt was desperate to unload him. We weren't desperate to unload Leon. How did I know you were a trekkie.
we love giving away draft picks, I'm sure we could have given that 7th and maybe a future late rd pick and gotten the deal done. if leon wasn't in the plans they should have gotten rid of him earlier for more than what we got in return. Maybe they tried and couldn't I don't know? but assuming they didn't(usually we hear rumors about this stuff) I think they did a bad job w/ leon and what we got back for him.
Only true if he ever returns to what he once was and you may be the only person who thinks that might happen.
Once McKnight was a Jet, everybody knew our hand. Leon was a goner. Anything for him at that point was a bonus. Quit crying about an injured RB. This is the NFL. Players change teams more often than you think. New players take their spot. Life moves forward regardless, so its time we accept the past.
You know, neither side is going to budge here. Junc was on record before the draft saying he didn't want to trade Leon for anything. He's sure as hell not going to agree that a 5th was fair value. He's rating him on his potential, a lot of people are rating him on production/injury status, and others, like myself, hate to see the potential leave, but recognize the practicality of the move given the likelihood of the various potential situations and given his past usage by the CS. I don't see how anyone's mind is going to be changed until we see what Leon does this season in Seattle, what happens to him in FA after, and how his replacements help the team. The only thing I would caution junc against is thinking that the CS would suddenly realize where they went wrong in utilizing Leon and give him enough carries to make the single season worthwhile. I have no evidence to support that they ever fully knew what they had in Leon.
I agree, I think we should have tried before the draft and again maybe we did but it's rare for rumors about it not to get out. who are you to tell me to quit doing anything? i'm allowed to vent and i'm annoyed we got so little for leon. pretty soon those it will be training camp and we'll move forward but right now these moves are fresh and the point of boards like this is to debate moves like the ones we made this past weekend.
I hope I'm wrong, I'm just disappointed and venting. The further we move away from this weekend the more it will be forgotten. I'm not a guy who has favorite players but I love having good people on our team and when we lose them I get annoyed. Maybe I'm being irrational? I don't know but I just feel if were going to get rid of him we could have gotten more. Either way I just want to win a Super Bowl and no matter who is on the roster I'll be rooting to see that happen.
I don't think you're being irrational. I didn't want to see Leon go either. But maybe he's not as far along as the coaching staff would have liked and had to pull the trigger on getting McKnight which forced our hand on trading Leon for as little as we did. I'm just as disappointed as you are and hope this move works out.
