Wow. Just wow. I've heard some sordid things about Bryants family situation but to call him on it is disgusting. These are job interviews. I promise you if someone asked me if my mom was a prostitue in a job interview, I'd be VERY pissed off.
They are test questions to see how you respond. This isn't the run of the mill career. The Bryant one is pretty stong, but the others are pure test questions to see how you do with curveballs being thrown at you.
Yeah, I think you hit the nail right on the head. I forget if it was James Laurinitis or Brian Robiskie that had one scout ask them "when's the last time a LB/WR from Ohio State did shit in the NFL?" They want to try to rattle you and see how you respond.
These go well beyond control questions. A control question would be me asking you if your 1000 years old, or when stopped burying corpses in your neighbors' flower be. Asking if someone's mother is/was a prostitute or how they felt after they abandoned their team is asking to get your teeth pounded into portions of your lower intestines. Gerhart's question, as the article stated, is a great way to get you and the team sued. What is even the right response to these? Per the article:
Fuck...the last thing I needed was a reason to cheer Dez Bryant on, but now I hope he has a great run as a Cowboy, Keeps his nose clean, and reminds everyone of what a little dick Ireland is with every opportunity.
I just read that earlier. I really want to see what happens with this. No way will they be able to sweep it under the rug.
Maybe Ireland was trying to get some action from her. What an innovative way of soliciting a prostitute!
I agree with the Bryant question. Its alarming. But the others aren't to terrible IMO. I wouldn't be pissed to the point of attacking someone. I have a feeling all teams do this, but not as bad as Ireland.
The Rolle question was supposedly from the Buccaneers. Even if that one was asked without any malice, it's still a terrible thing to say to someone and shows the depth of ignorance this league can plunge to.
Ireland needs to be reprimanded by the Commish. There is a line you don't cross in questioning players....he crossed it.
Agreed. I think an appropriate punishment would be to strip them of their first round draft choice and give him to us.
According to both books I have read and Shaun O'Hara, it's not atypical to be asked questions that are offensive like this. Granted for Dez Bryant these questions were probably measured a bit more, but it's not like they came out of the blue. Isn't it also possible that they want to see how the man handles being insulted? Rookie hazing, snarky reporters, and pissed-off opposing players will all say different things to try and get rises out of him at different moments; is it such a bad idea to test the guy's reactions?
