Think he was suggesting a power back to run the ball. Connor has a little over 200 rushing yards in 4 years of college. And well I dont think anyone would feel comfortable with Trich running the ball more than the occasional catch the other team off guard play. I do have to agree though that id feel much more comfortable having another power back to run the ball with. 6 RBs is a bit much (im not counting Chauncy Washington since well he hasnt proven he can do anything in the nfl) But I mean we got Greene who is only a 2nd year HB who got injured at least twice last year, LT who is a has tremendous upside but just has just as great a chance to be washed up and useless, and a rookie who has a history of fumbling and could take a year or two to get used to playing in the nfl. For a run first team id feel much more comfortable if we added one more back who we could trust with carries in the event we needed someone to step up. Then again we have a much better passing offense so maybe we could survive without running as much
so? Conner can do it too. And you can't see him as the 2nd FB. He's more of a ST player at this point and might line up at TE at times to block there. He's more of an h back.
"I loved the Jets offseason so far" "But I hated LT over Thomas Jones" "And I HATE Gayson Taylor he sucks and never makes big plays" "And Cromartie suckzorz and has many babies" "And Pool is one hit away froma nursing home" "But man, I LOOOOOVED the Jets offseason until they went and fucked up by trading a broken #3 RB about to be a FA for the best FB in the draft, drafted a younger replacement for said #3, replaced the weakest link on the offense with a high-ceiling young guy, and picked the #1b corner in the entire draft with the 29th pick. Yeah man, I loved the Jets offseason until that shitty draft"
Nice post man, I pretty much agree with everything you wrote. I personally believe we are going to see a plus in the LG position this year, but I guess you can say I was so anti Faneca by the end of the year that I am biased. He was a fantastic run blocker, but there were too many times he looked like Adrien Clark out there and it was humiliating in pass protection. I really like Devito and am definitely all for giving him a chance to start because he has earned it. I just hope he can handle the starting duty. Rex never dresses a lot of D linemen, so I can accept us not having hot shot names to fill these positions. Westerman... Fuck he's average. I think we are a lot better than last year, and I can say out of my tenure of being a Jets fan I have never been so proud of what the team is doing.
Why does this strike me as the flip side to the "We need Danny Woodhead as a backup for Leon" argument?
See - this is where you have it wrong. TJ was dumped for Green, not LT. Green looked so much faster and quicker and stronger than TJ at the end of the year it was not even close. LT/McNight were brought in to replace Washington as the change of pace back. How is replacing an old RB with a young stud and an injured malcontent with a vet and a rookie with two good legs and potential not an upgrade? You are living in early 2009 when it is 2010. Plus an injured Washington was worth nothing on the trade market. Faneca was not cut to save $2 million. Faneca was cut because he was the weak link in the OL and the Jets obviously waited until they knew thay had Ducesse. With Slauson and Ducesse, they knew they had his replacement plus depth. This was a football move, not a money move. Yes, money plays into it, but don't you think it was smart to cut Faneca this year, when there is no cap hit then risk cutting him next year when the cap might be back and the Jets have to sign a large number of players??????? Tanny and and the CS know what they are doing.
The issue I have with Greene was his inability to stay healthy. When we needed him the most he was banged up and couldn't play.
I fully expect Sanchez to be alot better in year 2 and I expect we'lls ee Brunell as his backup at some point so big edge 2010. I disagree about RB, we have many more questions. If TJ is done I guess LT is done and in a limited role a year ago Greene could not stay healthy so that is a concern. On the OL we got a little worse. We know faneca is not an all-pro anymore but he's still a solid vet and that OL was together for 35 straight games which was huge. Our WRs are clearly better w/ Edwards here for a full offseason and season and acquiring holmes. TEs: I expect to be better as Sanchez and keller seemed to get better together in postseason and I expect that to carry over to 2010. K: we took a step back. Talent wise Folk can kick but mentally who knows? i am not sure he will even be our K come opening day. on the DL I'm not sure, we lost douglas and are moving Gholston but in Rex's system the DEs are probably least important on defense. We get jenkins back so that is huge. Push. LBs: we have a great group and I expect them to continue that level of play. Push. DBs: obviously we have upgraded at corner, if pool can stay healthy(a big if) we'll be fine at safety. PR- same, we have a few quality, sure handed guys on the team. KR- downgrade w/o leon but we'll still be fine w. some of the return men we have and w/ Westhoff. P: push I agree we are better on paper, my biggest concern is we let 4 leaders/well respected Locker room guys(that can still play) go in one offseason and replaced them w/ some questionable character guys. There's more to winning than just talent, we had a close knit TEAM last year that didn't fold when it appeared we were dead. We'll see, i can't wait to find out.
Mostly because it is. If it turns out that we do need another RB on the team, I could see Schottenheimer and Rex giving Conner a go at carrying the ball every now and again. The guy is so similar to McClain coming out of college.
It has all to do with whether Greene can stay healthy. As Murrell pointed out a few posts above, he got injured when we needed him the most. Not saying that he's injury prone because of that, but we could use some insurance just in case. It was unrealistic to keep both Greene and Jones on the same team, especially since Greene outperformed TJ during the playoffs, but you have to admit that our running game would suffer a great deal if Greene is banged up towards the end of the season. And he will be if he's taking the majority of the snaps.
@RichCimini Vegas gives thumbs up to Jets offseason. They've gone from 25-1 to 12-1 to win the S Bowl. very nice.
Maybe if he gets hurt the Jets will give a few more carries to T-Rich. The guy is still averaging 4.0 yards/carry for his career. Who knows? Maybe he can get a few yards off of more than the "The FB has the ball?" effect his carries seem to rely upon. Or Conner.
Maybe the Ghost could try punting?? I don't like losing Leon but I don't think we are worse without him. He was gone for most of the year last anyway and look where we ended up. The Faneca thing is still odd to me but we should get a good competition in TC and not too worried about that. If I were the Jets I would've added some d-line depth in the draft, maybe Rex can turn Gholston into a DE Monster. Unlikely but stranger things have happened.
