I agree, this does show he's not just in it for the money. He basically could have taken his guarantee and ran if he didn't want to play football.
The love that people give Leodis Mckelvin astounds me. Yeah, he has been better than Ghoslton. Has he lived up to being the #11 pick No The jets were just in a bad position in 08 Leodis Mckelvin, Vernon Gholston, Sedrick Ellis, Keith Rivers None have lived up to their draft postions. Those are the guys who were in the conversation at 6. One bad pick, hey it happens. The jets at least have been very consistent the last few years. And by the way I'm still not giving up on Vernon, just kind of putting a perspective on the pick.
McKelvin got hurt last year, but in his rookie season, he made plays. Fuck him living up to the pick, the Jets wouldn't have this money drain on their hands, fucking up the money allocated to the pass rush. You can never take injuries into account. They are accidents. Gholston's shitty play isn't an accident, he just sucks.
See I would agree here, but this is when hindsight is 20/20. We drafted Revis in the first round the year before correct (I've been drinking and really don't feel like googling anything) and I can not blame Mangini for not picking another corner in the top 10 picks. Back to back 1st round CBs does not happen very much in this league, so I can't blame him for not picking up McKelvin. But I will absolutely blame him on taking the worst possible player he could have chosen, going only by combine numbers and not actual play. I will always believe Gholston cost Mangini his job more than his last year collapse.
Maybe it is the way he went about it and his demeanor. I read somewhere where he was brandishing Gholston's combine number in front of the entire team. That is kind of weird. Mangini was instrumental in getting Revis though. I guess you take the good with the bad............. This Mangini tidbit should be interesting for future reference.... he was lobbying hard for Wilson, while Holmgren overrode him to take Haden because of his playing against better competition. Interesting to see who turns out to be the better pro.
If he takes Wilson at #7, there is absolutely zero chance Haden falls to us, and the whole situation changes entirely. Thankfully he didn't win out in that case.
I'm pretty much there too. He demanded Gholston in the draft room, and I can imagine someone saying "its on you if he doesn't pan out" Combine that with everything else... bye bye eric.
I'll argue Wilson due to the fact that the Jets have the better defense. Mangini said Wilson is the closest thing to Revis in the draft. That opinion i trust because I bet he's looking for the next Revis like some crazy zealot.
Tanny is a freaking Magician. Ghost had the Jets by the balls. All he had to say was NO. With no appearant leverage Tanny turns guaranteed money into non-guaranteed money. Why would Ghost or his agent ever agree to such a thing when all the Jets have to do is keep him off the field to prevent him from getting his money? Brilliant
Because he wants to play in the league? I'm rooting for the kid, hope he gets his ring this year as a contributing part of the roster.
McKelvin?! Pffftttt. I hate Mangini for taking a widely seen "unknown" before DRC, Keith Rivers, or (more importantly, a guy we have to play twice a year) Jerod Mayo... there were plenty of directions we could have went in 08', i feel as if Mangini had Tannenbaum by the balls that draft... & now Tannenbaum is showing "never again" through the last two drafts.... Overall. Since becoming the GM in 2006, he has only misfired on Gholston.
I don't see this as Gholston wants to play at all. I see this as him thinking that he's gonna make at LEAST $2.5M standing there with his thumb up his ass.
Tanny to Ghost: "Look kid, we want to tie $10M of your garuanteed money to an incentive clause that requires you to get one sack over the next 3 years". Ghost: "Whoa! I don't know boss. That seems like a lot. If you can change it to a half sack over the next 4 years then I'll talk it over with my mom."
You might well be the worst current poster on this site. Enough already. We get it. You don't like Gholston. Hate to break it to you, but you'll see him in green every Sunday this winter. This is what it all comes down to. Everyone bitched that he was getting paid too much and that he should be paid based on his performance. Well, now he will be. So it's all up to Gholston to earn his paycheck. Period. And to anyone who believes he'll be benched to avoid him hitting his incentives, if guys can get on the field, Rex will play them. Stop being so reasonable. You make other posters look bad. Oh no! More logical and sane posting! hmy: Yup. Worst poster, and trust me, you have competition.
Fuck hindsight. I was clamoring for McKelvin for weeks prior to the draft. Look at the situation now: we already have the best corner in the league, we traded for Cromartie, and we still picked Wilson at 29. McKelvin was the best option for the Jets at 6 since Ellis probably doesn't pan out as a 3-4 end due to his size. Gholston had nothing but question marks coming into the draft: -Little to no solid experience playing in space as a linebacker. Even when the Buckeyes had him playing standing up, he was mostly rushing or just buzzing the flat, not making any attempts on the ball. -His hips were a major question coming out of the Combine. He was stiff in his motions and he couldn't change direction at all. -He disappeared in games all the time at OSU and got his sacks in bunches McKelvin on the other hand was a top-flight corner prospect in that draft. Picking him should have been a no-brainer, especially considering that was the predominant opinion of the scouting department was that he was the right pick. He might not have fully lived up to the #6 pick but we would have had a lot more production out of him than the assclown that Mangini took in his place. As for Gholston vs. collapse, I'm willing to believe that Gholston played a huge part in that but the way they collapsed was still a major problem. He pretty much lost the locker room's desire to play and he was freaking out left and right at guys who weren't expected to show up as big as Favre because he couldn't freak out at Favre. The San Francisco game had to have been one of the worst examples of coaching I have ever seen. His sideline tirade towards Keller for dropping a pass was terrible management of a rookie. He had veteran players fucking up harder but he took out all of his frustrations on one of the least experienced guys on the field. Fucking pathetic.
if gholston is the reason that we have rex ryan then he will always be alright with me ... and this re-negotiation was def his agent telling him he needs to see the field if he ever wants another nfl contract
I still think he's on the chopping block and his try-outs will be the pre-season games. Especially if from now until TC some vet DE becomes available for cheap. I don't think we can afford to keep him on the roster because he's gonna cost us around 5M+ next year if we cut him. That's gonna be a bitch with all the core players we have on a contract year.
