ha ha?? if that is all we can get we hold onto him. i'd rather lose him for nothing next year and get another year out of him. They saved $2mil, that is found in woody's couch cushions. I hope it is an omen plus Feely left the Giants after '06 and they won in '07. Unfortunately voodoo isn't a good way to build a champion. Were the struggles in our pass game due to a leaky LG in pass prtoection or to having a rookie QB learning on the fly? yes jones struggled down the stretch but the man was hurt and we brought in a vet who also struggled yet was healthy and has a million more carries in his legs. I'm ok w/ the move but when you add in losing Jones, leon, faneca, feely,.. we lost alot of popular guys in that locker room- many leaders.
I agree cutting Faneca now was a mistake. They must think Slausen is ready or that Ducasse will be ready. I really hope this doesn't result in getting Sanchez killed as we have seen plenty of times what happens when you have a leak at the LG position.
and the run game deteriorating...... His game is slipping, but he's still a solid experienced linemen (just overpaid) I know eventually he had to go as he clearly was the weaker link in protection, but they at least should've waited for one of the younger guys prove they could actually play. How many touted draft picks have seen suck over the years? Not to mention the intangible aspects of him being with the team. Any other season and I would be totally fine with this, but being 20 minutes from the SB last season makes this seem hasty (not James) 1 year (or at least a few months) too early, IMO. I hope I'm wrong.
Well, considering Faneca in fact allowed MOST SACKS in NFL last year in spite of us running fewest pass plays, you've just pinpointed the exact reason for releasing Faneca now.
It is a move that is hard to understand. They still have to pay Faneca. It would have been nice to have a solid vet like him to at least back up the young guys. Perhaps they broached that subject with him and he said no way I am backing up or mentoring young players.
You act like 2 mil is a pocket change. We had quite a few impact players who will make less than that next year, including Revis, Leonard, LT, Holmes, Green, Cromartie, and many others. We just signed Taylor for less than 2 mil base. So, let's be honest here: 2 mil is not a pocket change at all, evenfor Woody. Which serious injury did Jones have that prevented him to play well? I know Favre played with torn shoulder a year before on his throwing hand, so it's easy to explain his decline down the stretch when he had to make every throw for the team. Which serious injury was Jones dealing with that prevented him from having 1 good carry down the stretch? As far as LT, I don't know if he will be good for us. I know he is a shell of his former self. But he didn't have Mangold and Brick in his line and he just had a different team, different role, so I don't know if he will do here as a back-up. He has more mileage than TJ, but he is a year younger and had a much better career up to this point. Plus he can actually catch the ball, giving us different dimension from Greene, which Jones did not. The bottom line is, while neither TJ not LT is in his prime, at this point I think LT has a better chance of bringing us more off the bench. I don't buy into the injury excuse. TJ proved he can't do it in play-offs. Maybe LT can. With all do respect to Jones, I'd much rather have HOFer like LT in the locker room to teach our young RBs than him. The bottom line we need good players that can produce. Jones and Faneca stunk towards the end of the season, and Washington has a horrific injury, threating his entire career. Feely is a loss, but he is a kicker after all, and it's not like he played really great in play-offs either. He failed in the most important game of the season. The bottom line is, this is not a popularity contest. Games are played on the field, and the guys that have been let go did not play well or are not expected to play well after injuries. We plugged every hole these guys left by their departure and got younger and more talented in the process. I applaud FO for it.
Why is everyone saying this, it's simply not true- He didn't even allow the most on his own team (the Jets) http://hosted.stats.com/fb/playerstats.asp?id=4288&team=20 - Alan http://hosted.stats.com/fb/playerstats.asp?id=7753&team=20 - D'Brickashaw
Considering we cannot sign any FAs how will that $2 mil help us? and you are looking at base salary, when you factor in the guaranteed money it's more than $2 mil w/ most of those guys. Jones didn't have a serious injury that would end his career but he clearly was hurt and clearly not the same guy he was earlier in the year. I expect LT will be better w/ the better Ol and decreased role BUT he has alot more carries in his legs than jones and jones was not only more effective but he was our leader. What has LT ever led SD to? Jones was the leadre of a bears team that made a SB, he was our leader when we nearly made the SB. he shut his mouth for the good of the team late in the year when he lost carries, would LT do that? I don't know. I like what I know about LT but from what I know he's not much of a leader.
I'd rather get the 5th rounder, draft the next Mack Strong and not get 10 games out of a LW that will never be his old self.
Just to confirm the details about what we can or can't recoup with his contract, here's this. I know a few people were under the impression that we could get back some of the $5.25 million guaranteed if he signed somewhere else (depending on the salary). Not true. http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d817cb285&template=with-video-with-comments&confirm=true After cutting Faneca, Jets still owe veteran $5.25 million Jason La Canfora The Jets released former Pro Bowl guard Alan Faneca over the weekend. The 12-year veteran was due to make $7.5 million in 2010, with $5.25 million guaranteed. Unlike many guaranteed portions of contracts, there is no offset clause in Faneca's deal, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. He gets the full $5.25 million, and, when Faneca inevitably signs his next deal as a free agent, none of that money counts against that total. When it's all said and done, the veteran could well end up earning over $10 million this season. Interestingly, another prominent player released this season despite a massive guaranteed payment -- Jake Delhomme, with nearly $14 million guaranteed by the Panthers -- also had no offset in his contract, allowing him to make about $20 million total this season. They have something else in common as well: Delhomme and Faneca are both represented by the same agency, Priority Sports. Nice work on their part, for sure.
I'd rather keep leon for another year, use that pick on an area of need and then if we need to trade up a few spots to get a FB trade a 2011 mid rd pick.
This one says differently: Brick: 6 http://profootballfocus.com/by_player.php?tab=by_player&season=2009&lastname=Ferguson&surn=Ferguson&playerid=2949 Faneca: 6 http://profootballfocus.com/by_player.php?tab=by_player&season=2009&lastname=Faneca&surn=Faneca&playerid=346 Mangold: 1 http://profootballfocus.com/by_position.php?tab=by_position&season=2009&pos=C&stype=r&runpass=&teamid=-1&numsnaps=25&numgames=1 Moore: 1 http://profootballfocus.com/by_player.php?tab=by_player&season=2009&lastname=Moore&surn=Moore&playerid=1284 Woody: 3 http://profootballfocus.com/by_player.php?tab=by_player&season=2009&lastname=Woody&surn=Woody&playerid=451 He tied with Brick but there is no surprise that his side of the line was the weakest. The Jets saw the same problem with Adrian Clarke, Brick gives up more sacks when he has inferior help next to him. And two of his sacks came from the Indy game where Schottenheimer called a play that had Brick blocking down and giving Freeny a free release twice. Sanchez froze and got drilled instead of hitting his hot route.
Mine says 8, so I don't know what to tell you- I'm not arguing that his skills are diminishing, just the fact that he was the worst in the league was a little extreme.
Even if we use that site- His overall rating puts him at 18th. So 17 guys according to the site your basing his performance on are worse.
This decision is the only one I'm torn on this off season. However I believe that maybe since they think because he was pretty horrendous in pass protection last year and wore down a little as the season went on, that he may be in for a sharp decline this upcoming season ala Thomas Jones. Along with providing reps for his eventual replacement. Maybe there logic is that Vladimar is an awesome run blocker whos pass protection is raw but will improve as the season goes on while Faneca is still an awesome run blocker whose pass protection has become terrible and all his skills will diminish as the season goes on. Also I'd never compare the sacks given up by a LT versus a G. LT usually faces the best pass rushers on the opposing team while the G is stuck between a tackle and C. In Fanecas case, he was in between Mangold and DBrick which makes the sacks he has allowed even worse.
releasing faneca is dumb he only cost 2 million more to keep since 5.5 was guarenteed even if he did decline would it be so bad to hold onto him as a backup for 2 million woody johnson is a billionare im sure he wipes his ass with 100's
Ugh. My agreement with the move hinged in part on offset language in the contract. I'm starting to wonder how much sense this move makes... Again, it still has next year's cap number going for it. Cutting him this season saves $2 million on the cap next year (if there is one). It still has his declining play going for it. I'm just a bit nervous that we're not sure how Slauson/Ducasse is going to play when actually inserted into the line. Oh well, that's why they make the decisions. The timing of it makes less sense now that we know a high new contract doesn't save Woody any money, but again...if he were still on the team for TC and got hurt, we'd have to guarantee his full contract.
The fact that he is surrounded by a bunch of no name scrubs, busts, and has beens on that chart and every number filled in red shows how much he has fallen off. And you sorted it from worst to best so he is the 17th closest to being the worst G in the NFL based on those statistics. With another year going by and not playing in between Mangold and DBrick, he may be even worse.
