Not to be a dick, but what makes you believe he's going to be decent this year when he's shown us absolutely nothing.

Fuck him, they should have cut him already in this capless year.

Because hes already been used as DE and has not be that bad at it.
IMO he could be a decent DE , just needs a heart transplant.

Supposedly he wasn't big enough to play DE in a 3-4 when he came into the league. That's why they made him am OLB. Did he grow or something since then?

Guy played okay as a DE in limited spells last year and in Ryans scheme its all about taking up blockers not actually rushing the passer. A lot of ellis sacks were due to the qb falling towards of scrimmage/ back of his blockers as the pocket collapsed due to pass rush from the outside ( cb/s blitz) or via the ilb rush.

Exactly. With his extraordinary strength, it should in part make up for lack of size. But I'm thinking that bulking up shouldn't be that hard to do, plus as he gets older he'll fill out naturally anyway.

    yep!
hit it on the nose. like j cotch said and i alluded to in my OP, the one thing gholston actually does well is bullrush and knock the tackle back. If you look at his college film also, he did this all the time. when he didnt have a clear path to the QB, thats he got his sacks. granted, against college tackles but he did that part consistently and against some NFL caliber ones.

on a side note and nothing to do with the quoted post..
for the record, i've said it a few times...Mike Devito is very valuable to this team and makes plays. i'm comfortable with him, ellis, jenkins, pouha and the rest of the rotation. obviously we need a replacement for ellis at some point in time, as far as a player of his caliber, but he's got a couple of years left where he can play at a high level.

keep in mind that with our great back field MOST teams will come in with a game plan the is heavy on the run, draws, wildcat, and screens.

And light, very very light, on the pass.

Even the colts/saints of the world that like to go 3-4 wide will be shut down and will be forced to 'try and' run the ball.

This is why we kept Bryan Thomas.

This is why gholston at DE won't HAVE to get to the QB every down. Simply holding his ground on his side of the line is all he will have to do, so his 'inability' to shed o-lineman becomes a 'kind of' plus.

And we run the 4-3 about 40% of the time, so Gholston will be one-on-one a lot.

So if ghost can plug his side and help stop the run, we win.

i really think he has a better chance to succeed here than he does at olb for one simple reason: hes too dumb to learn olb.

my reasoning: do you remember the story about how he thought his car was stolen when he couldnt remember where he parked it? i do. that shows you how hes half retarded. he KNOWS how to play DE in a stance. he had to LEARN how to play olb standing up. now, knowing how dumb gladys is, do you think its easy for him to LEARN anything?

thats why i think this project, in theory, should work.

He will be steamrolled by the other team's tackles if he ends up being n the field for running plays. At least that will hasten to end his career sooner rather than later.

He probably won't, but it wouldn't hurt to try this out during Preseason.

I'm willing to bet (vcash) that Gholston makes the grade as DE.

From now on, in my mind he's a DE undrafted player we signed just yesterday... he's not as big as he should but he's more athletic, he's not as smart and hearted as he should but his job is not that complicated.
And he's playing for free... the cash he'll get is the cash we totally wasted on a bust a couple of years ago, so that money didn't exist anymore anyway...

He can't be worse than he was as an outside linebacker...

How does being a backup to a position that doesn't generate sacks give him a chance for 8 sacks?

Name a successful 3/4 DE that weighs under 275. The smallest ones are usually 280.
