Given the financial posture they've adopted the last few years they almost have to penny pinch every where they can. Woody is not cheap at all. He pays more up front to acquire players than anybody but Dan Snyder. The money to do that has to be recouped from somewhere. that means either making the PSL's work and going the Jerry Jones high cash flow route or cutting people as soon as they are not worth the inflated contract you gave them a couple of years ago. I'm not opposed to the Faneca cut but the Jets must find an adequate replacement for him because 2010 is a big part of their window to win a Super Bowl.
Ducasse might be a LG or he might be a RT or he might not be able to play in the NFL. We'll see what happens in camp. I'd probably have been more comfortable taking Faneca, Ducasse and Woody to camp and seeing what happened. The Jets decided to move on now instead of having the potential problem in the locker-room with Faneca and Woody staring at a guy who was going to take one of their jobs. Hopefully it works out.
This is one area the Steelers are less solid in. They will release a veteran offensive lineman as long as they know his replacement can run block. That has given them some very shaky pass protection recently, which Ben Roethlisberger should be grateful for because he'd have been a cut or mid round trade if the Steelers thought anybody else could survive behind their porous pass protection.
They're using the same scouting perspectives they had with Cowher and a run-oriented defense for Bruce Arians' pass oriented offense. Pouncey was the first rebuke of that system.
Someone should compile a list of all the "Faneca sucks!" posts during game threads last year just in case people have forgotten what a liability he was becoming.
