Wow. Via Manish Mehta's twitter account: BREAKING: I'm reporting that the #Jets cut Alan Faneca. More on nj.com in a bit. Now with link to NJ.com story. http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2010/04/jets_cut_pro_bowl_guard_alan_f.html
I'm hoping this is a Brandon Moore type of deal (re-sign him for less)....otherwise I don't like this. I'm well aware his play has dropped off but still
Due 9 million dollars each of the next 2 years....it is the right move. They must have some confidence in Slauson as well.
whoaaa...will SNY pick this up right now Faneca is a key player, but he has been bitching about thomas jones alot. Although he is a good player he is due like $7.5 million
That's pretty gutsy. Is Ducasse really the guy who will step in or is somebody else on the roster the guy?
$7.5 million in new money, but still...too much. What I don't understand, however, is that he's essentially a $2 million player this season...that's the difference between the amount of guaranteed money left on his contract and his salary number. He's not worth keeping for $2 million more than it costs to cut him? Did we really seek out every possible trade option before this decision? Seriously? Why do it now? Why cut him DURING the draft? This makes no sense, and I have my doubts. They'd better have some confidence in Slauson, as you said.
Folks, this has nothing to do with money. Faneca was mediocre at best last season, and he's only going to decline.
This is a bad move. Why break up the chemistry on the best offensive line in the NFL? I really hope this isn't true, Slausen needs another year before he can start and Ducasse is just a project based on every scouting report I've read. Faneca is still one of the best run blockers in the league and our offense is still run first. I understand that the deal makes fiscal sense, but it will come back to haunt us.
This cut can't be about money...while i understand we have a 'budget' it is an uncapped year...i mean seriously the reason needs to be football related otherwise its just pennywise and pound foolish
The notion of chemistry is overrated. It's something fans reflexively attribute to a quality unit, but it has nothing to do with "chemistry." It has to do with the quality of the players. The Jets had 4 excellent linemen last season and 1 below average one. They cut the below average one. This isn't hard.
