if the best player available is a pass rusher in rd 1 we are taking him. In that regard I don't think his signing affects our draft. Myabe if there are 2 players that they grade basically the same it could tip the scale to the other position but other than that I can't see it changing our thinking at all.

I think it just changes the draft in one regard, it moves Pass rush from being the overwhelming Need in the draft. It's still only a 2 year deal for an aging player so it doesnt' move it to the bottom of the needs list, it just fills our last glaring need (aside from punter and noway in hell do we use a high round pick on a punter).

In my opinion it just changed the first round pick from having to be a pass rush person to BPA, Hopefully that BPA is OL, DL, LB, DB, Any one of those , no particular order but all have depth and or age issues. I don't beleive the jets will trade up unless there's an absolute shocker in someone falling down int the mid 20's that was expected to go much higher.

Reason for OL, We've got two aging players on the OL and unless its a truly elite OL it takes a couple seasons to get them to function as part of your line. DL, same reason as OL although easier to have an immediate impact. Ellis isn't getting any younger, but he's still strong, Same with Jenkins, Devito and company I'm not sold on at the other DE so a young talented DL would be a good choice as well. LB same story, 3 of our 4 starting LB's will be between 30 and 36 years old this year, and with a draft being uncertain next year....well...and DB's just because Rex loves DB's.

I'd be shocked if we picked RB, TE, QB, WR with our first two picks in the draft.

One thing signing Taylor defintely does is remove Gholston from the spotlight and probably gives him another year for Ryan to try and get him to work out as a player.....not high hopes but it was my feeling if the Jets had drafted Graham, Kindle, Hughes or one of a couple others Gholston was out the door.

I don't think a 35 Y/O player ever precludes you from drafting a player at his position with a high pick, not even if its Jerry Rice, but I do think Taylor buys us another year to draft an elite edge rusher so we won't reach for one now.

If a really good one happens to be there at 29 and the Jets love him, IMO they'll take him, but it probably has to be a matter of outstanding value on their board with no positions of greater need even approaching the same value in that spot.

But that aside, I expect the Jets to take a D-lineman now unless someone like Iupati slides right into their laps, which IMO is very possible based on OG not being a premium position and the amount of teams that really don't need an OG, or not enough to draft one that high.

So right now I'm thinking Iupati, Joseph and Odrick are probably the front runners at 29, maybe a Dunlap or Alualu is in the mix as well, but if Brandon Graham falls ALL BETS ARE OFF

Ditto if Earl Thomas happened to slide

Or if the Jets happen to love Hughes or Kindle I wouldn't count them out either.

Pretty much my opinion on it. We won't make a huge trade to get a pass rusher but if someone is sitting there for us, no one in the draft room is going to say, "Pass, we have Jason Taylor."

Disagree, I think the Jets will just take the BPA who plays DL, LB, DB, OL (not in that order) as they are all basically equal needs at this point. Though one might be able to argue that replacing Devito (or whoever) on the DL would be the single biggest improvement that could be made for this season.

But OL, LB, and DL all have age issues and depth issues. 2/5ths of our offensive line will be 32 or older this year, 3/4 of our starting LB's will be between 30 and 36, 2/3 of our DL will be 31 or older this season as well. And DB is just on the list because Rex loves DB's :)
All will be equal issues that will need to be addressed, so might as well take whoever is highest on our boards when we pick that's at one of those positions. Because due to age issues we're going to need them all. Now in a case where we have several players available where they rate pretty much equally, I'd give the preference to DT as it is the key to the 3-4, but Rex isn't a straight 3-4 defenesive co-ordinator he plays 4-3 and 6-4, 4-6 as well as he tends to think multi-diminsionally on defense and suits his defense to fit his players.

Perfectly said, Jabba. All this does is remove the need to reach for a pass rusher. It doesn't mean we don't take one. If Iupati is the pick, we also have a full day or two to move Faneca if those rumors are actually true. I'd like to think the FO will keep him around for one more season, but who knows?
