To add depth to of aging Defensive Line I think we should draft this guy out of East Carolina. He has good size at 6-5 and is a double-cheeseburger shy of 330 lbs. The guy is a beast at the combine putting up 225 39 times. I just hope is strong combine didn't put him out of our reach without trading up.
+1 I don't think he'll last that long, not with so many teams playing a 3-4 and so few quality NT prospects in every draft. Its a simple case of the demand far out-weighing the supply. But if he is there, absolutely I would take him in that spot. Gotta remember, its not only the starters, 3-4 teams are all looking for quality depth at NT as well, because those big guys need a blow, they can't play a ton of snaps, so you need NT's (plural) you can trust to actually play.
If the Jets traded back into the second and came away with Cam Thomas or Linval Joseph, my head would explode. Our defensive line would be set. I also wouldn't be upset if the Jets drafted multiple 315 plus pound defensive linemen. Joseph and Thomas are both athletic enough to play end and nose.
Do you see Thomas lasting to the second half or the Second round still? The Bills, Skins, Broncos, Phins, and Chiefs are all looking for a NT in this draft class. There are not that many good ones to go around and I see Thomas's value moving into the top half of the second. I see very little chance of the Jets landing him. Worst case senario would be the freaking chargers taking him one spot ahead of us just to piss me off.
Yes, I do. Like you said though, a lot of teams need a nose tackle...so a few teams will definitely have to go in different directions.
As I look over it more and more the demand seems to way out pace the supply in the NT market. Only 3 guys have the size and skill to step in right away at NT in this draft. Thomas, Williams, and Cody. They also could all end up in a 43 team needing bulk and youth inside. Think Minnesota or Houston. The Phins are losing thier starter from last year with liittle to replace him. Even if resigned he's missing 8 games. The Bronco's run D was awful at the end of last season and a weak NT was a big part of that. They are surely after one. The Bills are making the transition to a 34.Stroud could be asked to take on the job, but I don't see him as a NT in the 34 and gettign pushed around by the AFC east power running games if he's asked to take on two line men. The Skins are reported to be switching to a 34. While haynesworth has the bulk, power and hands for the position, I see him as a better fit at End where he can also provide pressure on passing downs. Only Montgomery has the size to play the nose besides Albert and he is not a very good DT to beginwith. KC needs a true nose and has two second round picks this year. Pittsburgh and San Deigo both need an influx of youth at the NT position. I really don't see one of the three capable guys making it to 29 in the second. San Deigo becomes more of a need if Jamal Williams does not return. Linval Joseph is a big beast of a man but not a second round value in my mind. I really have not seen much of him, I've alway thought of him as more of a mid round guy and not a top tier step in right away prospect.
I'm not going to argue what exactly Linval Joseph's value is, but I would say that if the Jets took him at any pick other than #29 I'd be very, very excited. His versatility and athleticism is exactly what this defense needs. I would take him in the 2nd right now, but that's just me, other people have him a little lower. He's one of those guys who should get a tremendous value boost because he's a scheme fitter. He's a lot like Albert Haynesworth in terms of skillset when he was coming out of Tennessee, potential to play anywhere on a 34 line as well as fit in just about any 43 defense.
Thx for the write up GH. Yea, at 29 would be a disaster. 29th in the second? Maybe, depends on who's there. With the Bronco's signing Jamal Williams today they are less desperate in the NT department, but the chargers are now right up there with teams that need a big body in the center of thier line.
Ahh, how things have changed... If the Jets take Linval Joseph at 29, I think we should all rejoice in the streets. This guy has the size and the talent to be an elite 3-4 lineman in this league. It'd be nice to trade back a few spots and take him, but with the way the draft is scheduled, we should just grab him in the first if he's there. It's very possible for the Patriots to trade up to the front of the second to take him - especially with an entire night to negotiate.
good bump. Joseph has been quite the topic of conversation lately. I am personally on the Linval Joseph bandwagon and think taking him at 29 would be stellar, but if we were offered a minimal trade down to say 34 with detroit I think we might try it.
I'd be good with him @ 29, but there's always teams looking to move back in the first from early-mid second, so hopefully we can grab some extra picks in the process. Be awesome to have a great rookie to spell Jenx this year.
I did get a few opportunities to see some East Carolina games this year (and get hammered in downtown Greenville). He's a hidden gem. Well, not so hidden anymore. He's gonna be good somewhere.
His combine workout. http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-combine/09000d5d816e5b86/2010-Combine-workout-Linval-Joseph
Who else is drinking the Linval Joseph Koolaid???? Not me....for Rd 1. Opinions change from mid March to mid April..very quickly. Joseph is a very good player, but a reach at #29. I respect Gil Brandt......but his word isn't Gospel. I bet most on this site haven't even see Joseph play one down of football, they just look at his physical ability. If we draft Josoeh at 29, I'll be mildly disappointed. Trade down and get him in mid/early round 2, I'm fine.
