Unless there is a trade, this is my final Jet's mock draft. My assumption: Jets sign Jason Taylor (Pass on OLB in Rd 1) Defense is the main focus. NO TRADES I've studied the Jet's needs and the players that could be available. RD 1) Devin McCourty, CB, Rutgers...Rex realizes the need for more CB help. BPA on my board!! The second half of the AFC championship wasn't pretty. Revis & Cromartie will be an outstanding duo....the cupboard is very thin after the starters. Lowery could move to Safety, the guy has a nose for the ball and could become a good FS. Cole & Coleman...scary shit. Rex's system is dependant on solid CBs and Cromartie's future could be short.....one year contract. McCourty could easily be a #2 CB in the near future and would be an outstanding Teams player. The spread offense getting more play in the NFL you need 3 solid CBs. RD 2) Cam Thomas, DL(NT), North Carolina...Thomas falls to the Jets at #61, thanks to the depth of rd 2. Excellent athlete for his size give the Jets immediate youth and depth in the rotation. RD 4) Corey Peters, DE(3-4), Kentucky...Solid steady player that has good size (6'3", 310lbs). Could be a long term replacement for Ellis. Visited with the Jets and heard the Jets a very high on Peters. If we don't draft Odrick early..Peters could be a good alternative. RD 6) Mike Tepper, OT, California...a solid RT that could take over Woody. Has the ability to play LT...if Dbrick went down. Not very athletic pushes his stock down. RD 7) Dexter Davis, OLB, Arizona State...disappointing 2009 season. True 3-4 rush OLB!!! Davis had monster campaigns (double digit sacks) the previous 2 years. Rumors he had a nagging injury this past season. Comments appreciated!!!
As usuasl WW I agree Only thing is I think we go either NT or DE but not both... and I think we go OLB a bit higher... but it's always a crapshoot since in the later rds you must fo BPA.
Thx Mambo!!...Appreciate your comments. Dexter Davis was an unbelievable pass rusher in 2007 & 2008. Low risk in Rd 7. Didn't go higher with OLB ..since Taylor is in play in my scenario.
I think the FO plans on keeping Cromartie. That's the only reason why I don't want to draft a corner so high. There's going to be lots of money invested into that position. Ryan will be able to find solid nickel and dime corners in the middle rounds and after the draft. I like McCourty, but I think he's a mid-second round prospect. Cam Thomas and Corey Peters would be awesome selections. I'd really like to see Mike Tepper in a Jets' uniform. I'm not so sure he'll be available that late, but anything can happen. He's a tough, versatile lineman. That one down year won't hurt Dexter Davis that much. He's been far too productive at Arizona State to slip that far.
I strongly disagree. McCourty should be drafted on Thursday night, latest top of Rd 2. Jets & Baltimore are 2 targets. McCourty has shown no flaws to warrant his stock to drop to Mid Round 2. I have McCourty rated the #3 CB and he's probbaly one of the top special team players in this draft.
I love McCourty in the slot and really couldnt complain if that was the pick. I think who we pick in the 1st has alot to do with if Taylor signs by the draft or not. I dont see us drafting 2 dlineman, just because Rex usually only dresses 4 or 5: Jenk, Ellis, Devito, Pouha, and draftee. There would be no room for 2. I think we would go Olineman in round 4 and OLB in round 6 in this situation.
Exactly how I feel!!! Since Rex doesn't "generally" (Game plan specific) dress many D-Lineman...the need for CBs is paramount. The age of our D-line is scary. IMO, Jenkins is only going to be a situational playrer the rest of his career. More depth at 3-4 is a must!!
I'd be a bit disappointed, honestly, if we drafted a CB in round 1. I think Lowery is a solid #3, and we can get a #4 later on. But if we were able to grab Thomas in the second round, then that would make up for it, so I wouldn't mind too much.
Would love this draft. You make a completely solid point on why to draft McCourty at 29 and i could honestly see him going higher to a team like the Steelers, Ravens, 49ers, or even the Pats. The only thing that worrys me is getting a OLineman soo late.
I know you're very high on him. Let me explain why I feel this way... By saying that McCourty is a mid-second rounder, I'm not trying to say he's a second round talent. I think there's just too much overall talent rated higher for him to go in the first round. Baltimore wants to get younger on the defensive line. I think they'll make a hard push to get someone like Jared Odrick. I've seen numerous reports saying that they want to improve their defensive line early. After losing Dwan Edwards and Justin Bannan, they have no depth at all behind Haloti Ngata and the very old Trevor Pryce. Yeah, yeah, yeah...he's a great special teamer. You don't draft special teamers in the first round. You know what McCourty's biggest flaw is: He's in a cornerback class that includes Joe Haden, Kyle Wilson, Kareem Jackson, and Toast Robinson. McCourty could very easily go in the first round, but I think Jackson and Robinson will jump ahead of him causing him to slide just a little bit. For the record, I think he's a damn good player...I just feel there will be more value on the board.
I respect your opinion on McCourty. I understand you don't draft a player in Rd 1 for just special teams. McCourty and Kareem Jackson are even in my CB rankings 3A/B. What sets McCourty apart from Jackson is his special team play. McCourty has bocked 7 Punts or FGs in his career... unbelievable. McCourty last year average 25 yards everytime he returned a kickoff...crazy!! The only thing that scares me (just a little) about McCourty is his height...he' just over 5'10"...but his athletic ability makes up for it.
The closer we get to the draft the more I'm wanting this to be our pick. I'm still holding out hope Kindle our Iupati fall to us at 29, but I might even take McCourty over Kindle at this point. I just feel like having another solid corner means more to this teams future success than adding another linebacker. I'd still prefer Iupati, but would definitely feel good about McCourty and Thomas as our 1 and 2. Pass D, rush D, and special teams would all see benefits from these picks immediately.
I agree we stuck in Donald Strickland at Nickleback and at times he looked amazing. In baltimore Rex used fricken Corey Ivy! I dont think cb in the 1st round makes much sense. If we draft one in the 4th id be fine with it.
What about guys like Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, Quan Thompson, Javier Arenas, or Walter McFadden? Wiilling tacklers that can contribute right away in certain roles. ...and as much as I dislike AJ Jefferson, we could draft him in 4th or 5th round and he'd be a hell of a special teamer. Jefferson was arguably the best kick returner in college football for the last two seasons. Plus, he's a very good tackler. My point is that this team can find defensive backs that are solid special teamers much later in the draft. McCourty is definitely a better prospect than all of the guys I mentioned, but he'd play the same role and contribute just as much...for a higher price.
No question the players you mentioned could contribute, I especially like AOA and he could be a possibility in late Rd 2. I'm going with McCourty as my best player available when the Jets are OTC. Graham, Wilson, Odrick, Kindle, Iupati, Pouncey would all have to be gone. I'm NOT on the Linval Joseph bandwagon in rd 1.......he's a reach. I respect other Veteran posters on this site, I'm not convinced Joseph is worth a late Rd 1 grade.
Same here, WW I have no problem with the value or the player (McCourty), but Cromartie is only 26 Y/O and IMO he's here for the long haul to form a dynamic duo with Revis ... and he is enormously talented too. So IMO if we're drafting a corner its really to play the nickel, which is really important and I have no doubt we will draft a corner at some point, I just don't think we'll draft a nickel in round one. BUT I COULD BE WRONG
I look at it differently. I don't view McCourty as a Nickel. The NFL is now a 3 CB league, especially Rex's defense. The depth of our CBs is very shaky and the money spent on a late Rd 1 pick isn't a budget buster.
I like McCourty on the Jets. -As I said before, this secondary is amazing when Lowery is the #4 CB. -Plus it gives the Jets some flexibility to let Lowery take a few tryouts at FS. -If we want to beat the Colts, we need 3 CBs. -Not to mention giving Revis and Cromartie a break every once-in-a-while.
