Draft day is only days away now and I have had many thoughts in my head from articles that I have read and press conferences that I heard from the Jets, Here are some of my observations that I am looking for in the draft: 1) Tanny mentioned that he would not be surprised to grab a DL or 2. 2) Tanny has mentioned on several occasions that Rex can not get enough CB's on his roster. If items 1 & 2 are not a smoke screen then we can assume 3 of our 5 picks go to DL and a CB leaving 2 picks for a OL, OLB, S, WR (Usually takes a season to groom a WR) or a P. I also feel that If the Jets will pick up a player that has punt and kick return ability somewhere along the way. There are some players that I feel might be packaged for draft picks on draft day, they are: 1) Bryan Thomas - If Taylor signs, then I could see the Jets drafting a pass rushing OLB to be be groomed by Taylor, leaving Westerman, Gholston and the rookie LB to battle it out in training camp for a PT, platooning with Taylor. 2) Kellen Clemens - Rumor is that the Jets are going to sign QB Brunell after the draft to backup and help groom Sanchez. With 4 QB's currently on the roster the Jets are free to shop the QB if they can find a taker. Hopefully they can find a late round pick for him rather then releasing him. 3) Leon Washington - I personally like Leon and feel he is poised for a big season with the addition of Holmes to help open the underneath passing game, can never have too many weapons. The Jets have been talking him up since he has re-signed, which probably means that they are going to try and ship him out. If he does go and we are only able to get a single pick for him, it means that we will have to use a pick to replace him.
I think there is enough KR/PR ability between Brad Smith and Santonio Holmes that they don't need to draft a guy because he was able to return kicks in college.
Brad Smith is just OK but with Leon Washington potentially getting healthier, I agree that we don't need to invest picks into the return game. We're probably going to draft a corner anyways. We should be fine.
Right after the Holmes trade, I still found myself thinking that drafting a WR in this draft might still be a move the Jets would have to look into. The luxury with having Holmes, however, is that it doesn't necessarily have to be with their first (or even their second) pick. They can take a chance on a "project-type" WR. I feel this way because: 1) Holmes suspension means some playing time will be available (and Clowney just isn't that great). 2) As I said earlier, the Jets can afford to wait a year for a guy to come into his own and learn the ins and outs of being a receiver in the NFL 3) Probably the most important reason would be that I find it very difficult to believe both Edwards and Holmes will be re-signed next off-season, so it would be smart to already have a guy waiting in the wings when one of those guys is gone.
I agree about the Jets adding a WR, the only reason that it may not happen is because we only have 5 picks and several needs, in a perfect world we would add one to develop for the 2011 season.
I don't know...I feel as if the team can afford to do this even with the needs they have, which IMO aren't that many. I think they can afford to spare one of those picks on a young, raw WR to basically protect themselves next year and even step up at some point this year in certain situations.
But with Golden Tate we can run a lot of 4 WR formations that Schottenheimer doesn't even like and overload Sanchez with reads so he falters and we can start making threads about how Mark Brunnell should be the starter. Santonio Holmes is missing the first 4 games so that means he's only 3/4 of a person so he doesn't have legs so we need to draft a WR and he'll be 1 1/4 of a person and have extra hands!!11!!!!!111!!1!!11!!11!!11SH1FT!
